  1. More like deployed 4 four months, then home for a year with 30-60 days deployed during that year at a different location, and at least one 14 day major exercise thrown in for spin-up. Could be better; could be worse.

I don't know if you're speaking on the PACAF E-3s or old gouge, but currently at TIK it's 6-months on, 6 off since Odyssey Dawn/Unified Protector. The 30-60 days for counter-drug ops is also extended based on manning. That said, with what's going on in Libya, this could likely change within the next year.

  2. And on top of all that, most of my bros lately haven't even realized they are a 1 Lt for a few weeks until they can't figure out why their paycheck went up or they randomly check MPF and have the "damn, I was supposed to be wearing blue on my shoulders for a few weeks now." There's no notice, no board, no reason to really feel like anything's changed.

If you want to give your bros a notice or feeling of change in rolling over the 1Lt mark, take them to a bar or the shopette and demand free drinks. They'll feel the change when they wake up with a hangover and check their bank account. Hold them accountable!

  3. See above. Really liked it, hope it wins best picture.

Damn, I need to learn how to read. I even went through recent posts for reviews, must've skimmed right past it... I'll try and check it out this week.

  4. Finally went and saw "127 Hours" tonight. Go see this movie.

If I hear someone say they can't do 2 more pushups, or run 15 seconds faster, I will remind them of a dude that drank his own piss and cut his arm off with a dull knife, then repelled down a cliff and hiked to safety.

The brain is a hell of a drug.

    2. Saw this movie yesterday. It's not only good, but has a cool style about it. Cool camera angles, interesting flashback scenes; makes you feel like you're going crazy with him. I thought it would be like Castaway or something, but I really can't think of a movie like it. Just a well done movie, worth the buzz around it.

Has anyone seen 'The Fighter'? I'm on snow day #3, and going to the movies is a sweet alternative to reruns of Tyler Perry's House and the Nth Sports Center of the day.

  5. Yea I looked it into because after I saw it I was fairly freaked out also...but it turns out even the "real video" and "based on actual people" are 100% false.

Pissed me off how they say X people are real and this is real footage and the entire thing was a crock of shit.

This movie could've been so much better. The trailer made it look like a new kind of horror movie, but the execution made it a lame-duck. Same with Pandorum.

  6. In Bush's memoirs Decision Points, he had some interesting stuff to say about Egypt and the Middle East in the context of his Freedom Agenda.

I was hopeful that Egypt would be a leader for freedom and reform in the Arab world, just as it had been a leader for peace under Anwar Sadat a generation before. Unfortunately, after a promising presidential election in 2005 that included opposition candidates, the government cracked down during the legislative elections later that year, jailing dissidents and bloggers who advocated a democratic alternative.

Sounds familiar. He goes on to talk about democratic failures in Russia, Venezuela, and other known dictatorships.

My hope is that America will continue to stand with the dissidents and freedom advocates... Their plight can look bleak, but it is not hopeless. As I said in my Second Inaugural Address, the freedom agenda demands "the concentrated work of generations." Once change arrives, it often moves quickly, as the world saw in the European revolutions of 1989 and rapid transformation of East Asia after World War II.

He goes on to talk about democratic reforms and progress throughout the Middle East and how far it has come during his presidency.

It will take decades for the changes set in motion in recent years to be fully realized. There will be setbacks along the way. But I am confident in the destination: The people of the Middle East will be free, and America will be more secure as a result.

I can get behind that (sts).

  7. Follow-up: problems have been addressed, but doesn't say which ones.

AF: Some Gorgon Stare Probs Fixed

The Air Force says in a statement that three of the seven problems cited in the testing memo have been fixed and that it will not field the system until theater commanders say they will accept it because Gorgon Stare will not be fielded until the theater commander accepts it. The service takes it responsibilities for developing the system very seriously, because, as the statement says, ” lives depend on the quality of the intelligence products that are produced.”
  8. Just read this on Danger Room & thought about posting. I think the expectations the company sold got a little blown out of proportions. At 2 fps how the F were you gonna track man-sized targets in an urban environment? Either way, the idea is potentially good but maybe the technology isn't quite there yet. Wonder how we can possibly digest all that video even if it does work...

Yeah, I wasn't following the rambling at the end of the article about testers being super meticulous and getting in the way of deploying it. 2 fps, inability to track man-size targets, etc. seem to be legit reasons not field it and they're doing the Pentagon a favor by doing their job. It would be useless and a waste of resources if the powers-that-be put this system out there as is.

Along with not being a mature technology, the article makes it sound like shoe-horning it into the Reaper, a plane that wasn't designed to carry it, isn't the best mate for the system. Obviously they're trying to use what they got. But putting a mature Gorgon Stare into some of the next-gen UAVs (or that Hindenburg carrying SkyNet) being tested out in CA has awesome ISR potential. Not a Global Hawk expert, but it seems like that would be a better platform. Even the MC-12.

  9. The real question is what will the homeowner do next... will they set out christmas ornaments, swing paint cans from stair ways and put heat through all the doorknobs, then a few years later disappear from the public eye for a long time only to turn up screwing Mila Kunis many years down the road?

Its really the only sensible thing to do.

  10. That's nice that they gave a name, e-mail address, and number to send complaints to. On the bright side... at least it's an AMERICAN plane (or a plane at all, what is it we do in the Air Force again?).

  11. I knocked out George W's "Decision Points" over the past week. Great read! Nice to see things through his point-of-view and past the distortion of the media. Iraq and Afghan were pretty interesting, but I enjoyed other topics like AIDS and education which I wasn't as familiar with. Cool to see the process it took to reach the decisions he made, as well get a behind-the-scenes look at the oval office. I thought he did a good job of recognizing mistakes he made, what he could've done better, and in general debrief his presidency.

  12. Intoxicated Passenger Drops Cruise Ship Anchor

A surveillance video shows Ehlert taking multiple steps to deploy the anchor while the ship was in motion. The MS Ryndam's maximum speed is 22 knots, which is approximately 25 mph, according to Holland America's website.

Ehlert confessed to dropping the ship's anchor when questioned by special agents from the FBI. He admitted to being intoxicated at the time and detailed the multiple steps he took in deploying the anchor, including entering an area marked as off-limits to passengers.

    That's actually kind of impressive.
