  1. Don’t listen to these people telling you to jump straight to the airlines.  Get either degree and serve in any officer capacity in our military.  It’s an honorable way of life.

  2. You people should really do some historical research on this topic, just on this site.  Same boring griping for a couple of generations now.  The creative solution is to produce more pilots.  Congress will not help with retention bonuses, so the AF has given up.  The ramp to 1500 pilots per year IS the target.  Younger squadrons IS the acceptable risk.  Keep calling me a troll, but this is the model going forward.  Embrace it and start working with those young pilots to get them up-to-speed faster.  Do something productive in your unit instead of complaining on a website.  The lack of “Service Berfore Self” on this website still floors me.  If I ever find one of you in real life under one of my commands…

How’s that been working out for y’all these last 6-9 years or so since management decided the retention problems were unsolvable and decided to produce their way out?

Has the definition of “experienced” been changed again since I retired?

Risk to fill squadrons with nothing but Lieutenants and Captains is acceptable.  Enough FGOs will stick around to adequately fill the commander positions.  The research is conclusive.  People on this forum don’t want to hear that, but not wanting to hear something doesn’t mean it’s not true.  The Pentagon is 100% focused on production ramp to 1500.

Another fan of the “divest to invest” plan that has worked so well for Team America since 1992.  Definitely promote!

    Or maybe…

Step 1) organize, train, equip fighting he-persons & she-persons with stuff that’s real.  Screw the AirPower by Theranos crowd.

Step 2) minimize the suck.  That includes letting retirees to do grunt work where the work is…sims don’t run themselves.

    Rinse and repeat as desired.

What in heaven’s name are you talking about?

Care to explain how this was a "necessary money move?!?"

We are dumping everything feasible to the side to modernize our fleet.  Trimming “anywhere and everywhere” is the mantra here at the PP.  Retirees overseas know the drill.  Their choice to live where they live.  We need to trim the fat faster.  Certainly would be easier if we had term limits and we could close excess bases here in the States, but Congress won’t allow it.  So we trim the fat.

  6. Interesting how my recent comments seems to bother some on this site.  The point is this:  if you’re cognizant enough to put together complaint after complaint in the English language on a website, man up and do something about it!  This is the greatest country in the world, despite our flaws, and to have former military leaders/wannabes in this forum whining for whining’s sake is an absolute shame.  Get out there and make a difference while you still have breath, for Pete’s sake!  And yes, I have more Air Medals than all other personal decorations combined over a very long career, so don’t give me the pity-party “Chang, you just don’t understand my pain.”  Be a man.

Great questions.  The answer is no.  Every GO sold out, repeated the same supportive tripe in public while privately voicing concern at our trajectory, yet continued up the chain of rank and pay.

Imagine if we had leaders who said this: “I resign from active service.  I love our country but cannot continue in good conscience to lead our men and women into danger with no clear objective or purpose.  Indecisive political policies are irresponsible, and I resign in hopes the ensuing attention will cause this matter to be taken seriously and resolved with urgency.”

GOs reading this, and I know they are, will doubtlessly guffaw at the simplistic scenario I present above.  However, they lacked the courage to take bold action.  Everyone with combat experience knows we don’t have bold/courageous General Officers.  We have highly intellectual GOs who can stay up 20 hours a day, run miles each morning and work their staff to death analyzing a multitude of variables… but they aren’t bold and can’t win..

So to the GOs readIng this in fury at my condemnation- I’m certain you think I am ignorant of how futile and ostracizing my proposed COA would be.  You’d be embarrassed in front of your peers.  It would be awkward and socially uncomfortable.  But had you played that card, you’d be a hero today.  Instead, congrats on the retired rank but you’re forever attached to the ignominy of how those wars ended.  FWIW I practice what I preach and burned every bridge on my way out over an issue to help my young squadron members.  It was uncomfortable going from #1 to the trash can, my peers and supervisors despised me at the end and I didn’t have a retirement ceremony over this issue.  However, I played every card and logged a major win for the young captains 6 weeks before retiring.

Please.  Your ignorance about what goes into being at this level is abhorrent.

Looks like they took your advice, Chang. That next star is in sight!

I sure hope so.  I deserve the extra money that another star would provide.

I will say this: for all of you complainers out there:  seriously?  You are complaining Uncle Sam took away your pittance $50K/yr to sign your life away for the next 12 years?  Get over yourselves you premadonna punks!  Get out of my Air Force and go make your money elsewhere.  We don’t need you, and we don’t want you.  But please, for the love of Pete, stop complaining about missing out on table scraps.  It’s so unbecoming of an officer.

  9. It’s time for the Air Force to cut loose any ideas of retention, drop the bonus to $0, and focus on growing our way forward.  You only need one-two gray beards at the top to run a flying squadron.  The rest can be O-3 and below.  Higher risk?  Sure, a little.  Push people through UPT in 6-months, FTUs in 2 months, double the output, and GROW our AF out of the pilot shortage.  Retention is a useless fight at this point.  Drop the bonus to $0.  We will be just fine.

  10. You need to throw your hat in the ring for big jobs like Exec, CAG, DS, stuff like that.  We need more pilots willing to help move the ball forward in the office, not on the flightline.  If you want to get promoted, that’s your ticket- stay where you are at & become an invaluable desk jockey.

  11. It’s in their agreed-to contract that the Army is now enforcing.  What’s the issue?  They agreed to the terms!

This is equivalent to all the sniveling weenies who ran up significant college debt saying, “Uncle Sam, it’s your fault.  Forgive my debt!”  Screw that!  You agreed to sit in the pig stall, now go wallow in the mud and stop griping about how “unfair” your life is.  Man up.
