    Thread Revival:

I've given up on my Apple Watch after two years.  I mostly liked it (with the exception of having to charge it EVERY night) but in typical Apple fashion it's gone on the fritz & is constantly resetting itself and/or freezing despite being fully charged and current on all updates.  Time to escape the shackles of the Cupertino overlords.  So I'm looking for a decent automatic, swiss made piece with a GMT or second time zone complication.  Prices seem to have gone up significantly recently (like everything else) so value is a major consideration.  Looking to keep it under a ~$2K cap.  Really like some of Hamilton's offerings but a lot of the models I like seem to be quartz only.  Any other watch snobs have some recommendations?

I recommend the Tudor Black Bay GMT. It's about double what you want to spend, but it's what Rolex was before Rolex became impossible to obtain. It's an amazing watch from their sister brand, and IMO, it's worth the premium you'd pay.

Unknown sorry!  Nevada is a tricky state like AZ was for us.  We actually have to have a loan officer who works for us live in that state and then we need to open a physical branch.  It's not out of the realm of possibilities since we did it in AZ but we gotta find the right person first.  Consider it a rolling ETIC for now.

No worries!  I’ll be standing by once that gets sorted.

  3. Is there even a process for this?  I have some pretty significant sinus issues and am looking at taking a new medication that is not approved.  I won’t even consider it if it forces a DQ, but if there is a process to get it approved, I’d be interested in knowing what it is.  The FAA has approved it on a case by case basis, but I also realize that they are much more permissive in that regard.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

6 months for me with Palace Front. I emailed for an extension and was granted a 1 year extension. Pretty easy process.

Sent from my iPhone using Baseops Network mobile app

I emailed for an extension and got the typical active duty runaround and a “FINAL” (actual caps in the letter) extension of 6 months.  Time to find a new justification to keep this extension train rolling.

How did you do it in vMPF?  They usually only allow 1 seperation option.

I had to go back to my already approved separation and amend the separation date.  I provided the supporting documentation for PC as additional attachments.  All said, it was about 4 months from submission to tentative approval, and another month after that to make everything official.  One thing to keep in your crosscheck as well is that the routing for coordination still goes through your previous management chain, so that can complicate the process.

    My experience was:

    • You cannot 7-day opt if you have greater than 2 years ADSC on the RNLTD to your new assignment, you don't even have the option if you have > 2 years retainability
    • Once you have a separation date set as a result of executing a 7 day opt, you cannot Palace Chase. You can however Palace Front if you plan on going to the Guard which will help assure as seamless transfer and no breaks in service (worked for me)
      • You're also not eligible for things like VSP, which I unfortunately missed out on since I already had a separation date set; not applicable right now but recorded for posterity
    • The clock does start on notification. I was notified by an AFPC email while deployed approx. 4 months prior to my RNLTD and had 7 days from that time to decide
    • Big Blue can absolutely send you anyways - I was sent on my assignment with 11.69 months of retainability, i.e. far short of the "normal" 24-month minimum for a PCS
      • That being said, I think most people end up remaining in place and serving as required at their current duty station, at least that's what happened to some other folks who 7 day opt'd the same assignment I eventually had to go on
    • Definitely get smart on the appropriate regs, and if you can, gain the support of your SQ/CC and functional manager for your desired COA

May the odds ever be in your favor!

Weird.  I managed to Palace Chase successfully after 7-day opting.

Stop Loss always has been (and still is) on the table.  It has to be.  U.S. citizens are depending on military pilots, some reading this forum, to defend this country and their right to L/L/PoH.  We must sustain an appropriate posture to our enemies in this interconnected world.  Stop loss, if invoked, becomes a patriotic duty.  I sincerely hope we have a few patriots left in the pilot ranks.

Your personnelists are working day and night at the highest levels to solve this problem by any other means.  Those personnelists are heroes in my book, and I believe they will be successful.  However, if they are not successful & Stop Loss is invoked, it will be easier, and shorter, if service members remember their core values & jump on the bandwagon.  Young people- do not be disheartened by the negativity on this blog.  The future of our Air Force and our country is bright, and you are the beacons.  Thank you for serving.

Thanks Dear Leader for reminding me that what is good for the Party is what's good for me

  8. I think there are enough qualifying statements in there that make it a 50/50 proposition at best.  Just my gut feeling.  Big Blue has a way of moving the finish line.  I think the big change will be the crew/CAP ratio, as the AF has been using surge numbers to man its squadrons, which has precipitated the continuous burnout in the community.  Eventually, quality of life will have to improve, and one tangible way of doing that is to up that ratio so people aren't having to sit in the box for 8 hours, 6 days a week while on mids.

Also, I don't think that the AF has a clue how many of the 18X'ers will actually bail at the end of their commitment starting in late 2017 to early 2018.  From the rumors I hear, almost all of them are as good as gone.  That sets the stage for more pain down the road.

  9. Our state is pushing dual qual, we would go to RPA's twice a month for a shift and get to fly jets as our primary job.  Mother AF has fought it, that being said, our WG/CC is already dual qualed.  I think that would release a lot of stress at least in our state.

That makes too much sense.  Unfortunately, the AF cannot come to grips with the fact that it's quite possible to "fly" these things and be proficient, even if it's an additional duty.

  10. Did you Gucci guys have a POC at Breitling you used to get a custom order started? I'd like to email them and find out if they have any C-130 designs.

Edit to add: Cue the sundial jokes...

There is a guy at LRF who is trying to set up a J-model buy.
  11. Shit!!!!! Just when ammo supplies/prices were getting back to pre-Barry Obama days.

EPA Reviewing reqest to ban Lead Bullets

Will Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson make a back door move to ban lead bullets the day before the November 2 elections?

Several environmentalist groups led by the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD) are petitioning the EPA to ban lead bullets and shot (as well as lead sinkers for fishing) under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). Although EPA is barred by statute from controlling ammunition, CBD is seeking to work farther back along the manufacturing chain and have EPA ban the use of lead in bullets and shot because non-lead alternatives are available. But here's the catch: the alternatives to lead bullets are more expensive. A ban on the sale of lead ammunition would force hunters and sport shooters to buy non-lead ammunition that is often double the cost of traditional lead ammunition. A box of deer hunting bullets in a popular caliber could be upwards of $55.

Although the EPA could have dismissed the request due to a lack of jurisdiction, it is obliging CBD. The EPA has asked for public comment on banning lead in ammunition, and an EPA notice was published seeking public comment that closes on October 31. Jackson would then make a decision to accept or reject the petition on November 1. You might say that even considering enacting what is effectively a new tax on hunters and gun owners--seemingly the only non-liberal group the Obama administration hasn't yet intentionally provoked--is less-than-perfect timing for the already beleagured Democrats as the midterm elections approach.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), a trade association for the firearm and ammunition industry, has hit back against the petition sending Jackson a letter documenting why EPA has no jurisdiction and outlining the damage that banning lead ammunition would do to U.S. industry and jobs, conservation, and law enforcement. The NSSF estimates that more than 90 percent of hunters and sport shooters use traditional lead ammunition. If all hunters were forced to buy non-lead bullets that are made out of metals like tungsten, bismuth, and copper alloys, demand could easily begin to outstrip the supply and prices would go even higher.

Bill Clinton famously blamed the NRA and gun owners for sweeping Democrats from control of the House in 1994 after he pushed them to pass the Assault Weapons Ban. For Democrats, especially those in rural and conservative districts that are already facing voters’ wrath, gun control could once again be an issue that helps defeat them and swings control of the House and perhaps even the Senate to the GOP.

    Don't worry. This just in

    Petition denied

  12. Jeezuz Kerist, what happened to all the ammunition in this coutnry? I can't find a box of .44 special to save my life.

Can't speak for .44 special, but Wally World here in Vegas just lifted their daily ammo limit a couple of days ago. Walked out of there with 18 boxes of 9mm for $10/box. Granted, it's kind of a sad thing when one is happy to pay "only" $10/box for 9mm.
