  1. So when the community hears the AF crying about this major 11F/viper pilot shortage, but then nobody gets to actually stay in the jet (did have some guys go from Kunsan to Osan because it was the only way to stay in) dudes are bailing. Which I totally understand, because for a guy/gal to bust their ass for the 3 years it takes just to get to MQT, then work for 3 years in the sq, to then get nothing for it and face a career of 11F "required" assignments that aren't in the F16 - why would you stay?

Personnel mismanagement seems to be a common theme across the Air Force. It's not AFPC's job to be fair, but when they it up so badly that almost everyone wants to leave it becomes an issue.

At least 11F isn't under the pred gun.

The McChord VML list came out today, 8 RPAs alone, 50% of the assignments (rest white jets).

MC-12 had about the same on the fall vml (had almost 40 RPAs drop in one week).

Not sure if the remaining pilots have received assignments yet.

  2. That's not how the cross flow has worked previously. You'd target T-38 grads who are 2-3 years into their first ops assignment and offer them a shot at IFF. No worse off than FAIPs.

Those T-38 grads are either going to be retained by their functional, or used to pay pred bills, while the FAIPs are dropping whatever FAIPs drop these days.

Take the MC-12 for example: most T-38-to-MC-12 pilots were assigned to MQ-9s, RQ-4s, JSTARS/RJs, or UPT. A few made it out to AMC. A grand total of 1 cross-flowed to 11F.

Morale of the story, AFPC has a lot of pred bills to pay before they can think about cross flowing. Plus, they want to retain their senior 11F pilots, not replace them with new blood with 2-3 years of commitment used up already.

What are FAIPs dropping these days, anyways?

  3. would LOVE to see how well those UCAVS work against a military with real EA capes. hell look at what the iranians did.

lets not even get into the scenario of the ultimate trump card. China/North Korea in an act of desperation launch a missile attack on satellites in orbit causing an ablation cascade denying everyone access to space, but more importantly cutting off our single most valuable tools for warfighting. sure levels the playing field pretty quickly

The Chinese won't do that. They'll hack the living hell out of every space system we have and toast our sats without having to get out of their pajamas.

As for the Iran drone incident example, that's like using the sole F-117 shootdown as a reason not to develop LO technology.

But I still think you are right about the issue. Current drone tech wouldn't be able to pay the bill in a CDO environment, but it will someday. If we are smart about it, we will make that day happen soon.

  4. lol 130 million dollar per plane busted by 50 million dollar radar/missile upgrade. we need a combination of LO strike/superiority aircraft (low numbers) and high punch low cost tradition platforms (high numbers).

that way we can go in, knock out the radar and missiles and make them come and duke it out with us if they really want to.

Or we could deploy hundreds of LO versions of the IAI Harpy/Harp and save a ton of money, then send in a small number of LO strike for whatever is leftover, followed by a deluge of conventional.
  5. Yeah, you're right, the cable wouldn't have anything to kick it up that high, but the prop would throw some serious rocks at it. I suppose you could keep it stowed, but it really should be in a better location.

Tail dragger landings, it's all in the sight picture.

  6. What ever happened to the eDodo? I followed that for a long time as a dink & an lt, but it faded away a few years ago

Viewer base died when Granny D (desjardins) blocked it at the Zoo. You think being aircrew she'd be able to take a joke.

Maybe some hope for the 11R community.

    Lol, that's cute.
  7. I haven't seen any RPA guys get anything but bombers for follow ons. I do have an MC-12 guy in my pit class getting spun up for IFF to eventually go F-16s.

That individual worked up at the wing hq, so it's definitely not the norm. Most of the other 20-30ish t38-to-mc12 pilots didn't fare so well.

Clark, you're right about the stovepipe, but I don't think it's a mentality issue - it's a manpower issue. 11F and 11R/U are critically manned. Not many pilots volunteer to go to 11R/U since it is a one way door due to manning. 11F would take more, but training capacity is too low to take anyone but UPT grads. 11S is shedding airframes, but not pilots. God knows what's happening in 11M; they can't decide if they are over manned or undermanned.

  8. Totally jives. HU&W seems to be familiar with ol Mikey's bs.

"Have a blessed day" isn't outright religious, it's just Southern. It's covered by free speech more than it is prohihited by sep of church and state. You'd have to ban govt employees saying "bless you" before you could ban that.

The real issue is this: Mikey needs some in counseling from being bullied. He thinks he got beat up at the Academy because he is Jewish, but it's actually because of the same reason people hate him now; he's a prick. And now he wants to pay the bullying forward.

  9. Can data link be added to simulate it? It looks like they need Mach 1+ too, not sure how they'd get around that.

If we need it now, then we should do T38s. Or we could pay the Canadians or Brits to fly aggressor full time until we can sort out the pipeline mess. Congress wouldn't like that last option, though.

  10. But they will install the aluminum one without taking into account the future requirements. This will require a retrofit that will cost triple the airframe cost. However, this isn't a bad thing because it creates expensive problems which in turn requires expensive labor to solve. It is how job creation works.

    Image of said retrofit:

  11. He says he loves to talk to the many Airmen he meets, but the most common topics are sequestration, compensation, retirement, health care, and benefits in general. He says we should refocus discussion to our mission, equipment, and capabilities. He compares his conversations and the Air Force to the Marines ability to focus on the mission.

I'd love to talk to him about the mission, equipment, and capabilities. Do you ever think he would able to talk to me? Probably not, because visits are carefully orchestrated (see JQP: http://www.jqpublic-blog.com/degraded-dogs-ponies-lying-game-air-force-vip-culture/

Now I understand why he might say that--his job is primarily to make us the best Air Force possible, to fight and win America's wars. Unfortunately, the concerns of the Airmen regarding their families and their benefits will decide the future manpower and readiness of the volunteer force. We've heard from the various defense officials and committees multiple times that the DOD is competing with civilian organizations for talent. Well, this is what that competition looks like.

And you'd be right, his job and the Airman's job is to make the best Air Force possible. It's Congress' job to set benefits properly, and they do that with the guidance from upper AF leadership.

If he didn't want to deal with Airmen asking about benefits and other bull**** all the time, then he should spend some time telling his peers to stop saying s*** like this http://www.military.com/daily-news/2014/03/26/generals-say-troops-understand-need-for-pay-cuts.html.

  12. O4 @ KBAB + 7%. Still not enough...

It's not like you are forced to live in Lincoln and Roseville. There are plenty of quality homes in Marysville! /s

Seems like most below O-3 are seeing a pretty bad decrease. There goes everyone's 40 minute commute gas money...
