  1. The BO doesn't always know which callsign within a flight is on the boom, the flight lead decides that and often doesn't tell the BO what the refueling order will be because it doesn't matter and it would just be extraneous comm. As long as we don't go overboard with worrying about which tail in a flight took which offload this might work.

All this and the tail numbers are painted next to the recepticle. The BO DEMANDS it be said over the radio before he even knows whether he will be able to see it when the jet pulls up to the boom.

You guys look at this picture and see if you can see the tail number on the A-10 (look carefully, it's REALLY difficult to see) and tell me if passing the tail number over the radio is more important than staying out of the wx so we don't ice up the maverick seekers.

    Rainman,

We get it, really, we do, you hate ever having to say your tail #. And yes the tail # on that particular Hog is clearly visable and unambiguous, (82-000656) and yes, any boom worth two squirts of piss should not ask for this tail number. However, the numbers are not always clearly read-able and not always painted in the same last year digit/tail format. How about cutting us some ######ing slack.

  2. I'll be the "ignorant" d-bag on this one: aren't they the same airframe. I mean obviously one is a military cargo plane (or a variant thereof) and the other is a passenger plane built for civilians, but they are the same basic airplane, right? I think it is pretty reasonable to think they are the same airplane from a non-flyer perspective. (FWIW, I know that the C-135 was developed BEFORE the 707 (basically they let the military pay for the R&D costs))

They were both devoloped from the same Boeing 367-80 prototype but the 707 airframe is wider and longer than the KC-135.

  3. In the interest of keeping the retardation to a minimum in this thread, please take the time to actually read the previous pages of the thread in which you are reading as opposed to re-hashing what's already been discussed at great and painful lengths.

Were way past that don't you think?

  4. Passing the tail number is a nonsense requirement that creates extra radio buffoonery. The tanker guys are in the best position to change the process since it is their bullshit requirement.

You've all heard that fighter guys don't like doing it. One of you herbivores could be a hero if you changed the process. Instead you stay fixated on the fact that "passing tail numbers is procedure and how hard can it be anyway" while ignoring the opportunity to improve it.

Not sure why the tanker guys can't get that.

    Dude,

First off...it is not our "bullshit requirement", every piece of iron in the inventory (AF, Army, Marines, Navy, Coast Guard) has a number that the fuel gets charged to. Do you think when your crew chief fuels your jet on your ramp that he doesn't have to account for the fuel just as we do? We could personally give a fat rats ass which tail number you are flying, but we are held accountable to make sure the paperwork gets done. In fact, when the Boom who gives you (and maybe a dozen other guys)gas over Azcrackistan finally gets back to the Deid after his 10 hour sortie, processes back through customs, turns in the secrets and all the other crap, he has to look your tail number up in a giant spreadsheet to get the FP number, unit, base and state and then type all that shit into what could be the most idotic and frustrating computer program ever. How about you just shut up and color and pass your tail number like every other guy since the beginning of air refueling?

  5. I was checking out the facebook page and out of curiosity, I refreshed every few seconds. The member count jumped every refresh.

    Nice work, capt4fans!

No kidding! Talk about "going viral"! 4000 members and picking up speed!

  6. Coming from an active duty A-10 mx backround, albiet years ago, I can tell you that mx shortcuts are (or at least were) the norm and that as he aledges, making the sorties happen took precedence over good mx practices. I had a similar experience in my day and when I refused to sign off a legitimate red x write up that I could not repair (long story) I was summarily stuck in the snack bar for two months when they figured out they could not force me to sign off the red X. I left AD shortly after and always regretted not taking it to the IG. Prior to the incident I was considered a "good troop" but when I would not sign off on a fraudulent corrective action my leadership shit on me. I'm not saying that this guy handled the situation correctly, I am hovever saying that mx shortcuts are taken and jets are being flown with known grounding write ups every day in the name of making the all important sortie count.

  7. I have heard the following around our ops (tankers):

VFR direct = going outside your chain of command or normal channels

    container = box

lead turn = get the jump on something or someone

Howdy = I farted... however this only works once or maybe twice during a flight and does not give you licesne to repeatedly stink up the cockpit. Over usage generally results in swift retribution.

  8. Harrumph!

Okay, I'm confused, I've seen "Harrumph" used this way (as a positive comment?) here on base ops before, but when I look it up I get:

    Harrumph

    intransitive verb

1 : to clear the throat in a pompous way

    2 : to comment disapprovingly

    transitive verb

: to utter (a comment) disapprovingly

    Someone care to enlighten me?

  9. That's not really my question.

Say you have two traditional guardsmen within the same unit competing for the same full-time slot. One of the two is a bum, the other has a civilian job.

Would the bum have the better shot at the job since he is obviously around more than the guy who has a civilian job?

I would have to say that assuming all else was equal, the bum would not have any advantage over the guy with a civillian job. However, if the guy with the civi job was min running the program, not pulling his fair share, had issues with getting his beans done and was always "on somebody's list" (there's a few in every squadron) he would be at a disadvantage. There are a ton of variables here ...ymmv. From what I have seen, the bums usually get treated like shit because they rely on the squadron to earn a living.

  10. Anyone have any kind of tools to count and keep track of UTA's, RUTA'S, FTP'S, ETC....

I've heard of some guys using a excel spreadsheet to keep track of what they have and to make sure they get paid.

If so, please upload them or point me to the link.

    Thanks much!

    Fulltimer w/ part time bennies

Blade, it is not rocket surgery to track your pay dates and an excel sheet seems like overkill. My unit has a simple paper spreadsheet they hand out, guys put them in a folder and keep them in their locker, but I prefer to just write them down in a little note book I keep in my flight suit pocket. I just write down the date, UTA, AFTP, GAFTP or AD and the number of "periods" in the case of UTA/AFTP or days of AD.

  11. Clipped for bevity

Remember praise in public, criticize in private? Generally good advice. A curt "Lt, I'd like to see you in my office," followed by a one-way conversation is the way to go.

There it is boys and girls- the correct answer. That is leadership! Sending an email threatening to "stand him at attention in the hallway and leave him there the rest of the day" for behavior that apparently up to this point has been tolerated is ass-clownery pure and simple. This kind of nonsense is exactly why we have so many of the problems we have today, it is a lack of leadership and lack of mentoring!

  12. Ace/Jarhead

Many thanks for the compliments. Much appreciated.

As an FYI for other interested parties, I have sold out of the $18.00 discounted batch that I ordered.

If you have not yet physically paid for your book, or if you would like to purchase a signed/inscribed copy, I have ordered a smaller batch at $22.00 per copy.

    Cheers

    Steve

Damn....still waiting on mine.....I just finished Flying Through Midnight and loved it, kinda got fired up about reading again. I might have to go out and buy something to tide me over.

  13. Since I haven't been to a good gun show since Randolph, and there's none in Nebraska (not a gun friendly state), I was forced to shop via internet. Hopefully this works out, but I'm buying from a site that was mentioned in this thread. Hope the XD is as good as you say it is.

    thanks

Not sure which Nebraska you're talkin bout...."not a gun friendly state"...huh? The Nebraska I live in has a gun show somewhere every weekend in the fall and another round in the spring. They are usually advertised in the World Herald "sporting goods" classifieds. It took me 15 seconds on Google to come up with www.nebraskagunshows.com. You need to get off the base a little more my friend.

  14. Bring wet weather clothing; it's British summertime.

Holy SH#t Steve, you weren't kidding! Really sucks they had to cancel, I was looking forward to the show! Oh well, I guess I got a free UK vacation out of the deal. It has been a bit spendy with exchange rate though! This is the first time I've been back since 87 except a few days stuck at Moldyhole, I can't believe how much it has changed....WalMart...in the UK...YGBFSM!

I would hold onto those memories fondly - the 'summers' in those days were much better than they are now!

Out of interest, are you coming here with some Hogs or something else? I probably won't be there, but if I am I'll try and look you up.

    Steve,

I'll be there with a "Husker" tanker, definitely stop and say Hi if you are there.
