Zero-ing the iron sights on the Mk12. Stupid sick groupings even with random 55gr run of the mill 556. I need to get off my ass and order the correct Leopold Mk4 scope (their Mil/LEO discount is insane btw) and some Mk262 77gr 556.And anyone know how to a tune a KAC 2-stage trigger? I was getting doubletaps so quickly swapped out lowers so nobody could claim I had an NFA rifle.Tune the trigger? I would say learn trigger follow through first before you claim the gear as the problem. For what it's worth, I would suggest getting away from the double tap mentality. Often I see students (especially from the comp crowd) who double tap because they think its about trigger speed. Change the mentality to 'scoring speed'. Seeing what you need to see from the gun rather than seeing one sight picture and hoping your sight recovery and muzzle deviation is tight enough that you slap the trigger twice as fast as you can and 'hope' you make your next shot. If accountability is an issue, get away from that mindset. Track your sights and let the gun give you the feedback during the course of fire. Not the target. If you notice where your sights lift and return, you'll be able to anticipate when the bolt has cycled forward enough that you can break your next shot if the situation dictates.
Next question. Why Leupold? Do you have a reticle preference, glass coating/type, mounting solution and mission requirement?
Lastly, if you're looking to build a rifle for SHTF, why are you going light? Lightweight builds are close encounters shooting. It's been my experience that even with a lightweight barrel and good ammo you lose major capability. You take a perfectly suitable gun for 700 meter shots (provided you have the right glass and ammo) and throw a LW barrel in the mix and it suddenly changes to a 300 meter one trick pony. Also, why on earth would you want a lighter BCG? That has nothing to do with building a lighter rifle. It will actually change the reliability of the rifle as well. If you want a lighter rifle why not just get a 14.5 pinned/welded gov profile barrel, a BCM KRM, and run a H3 buffer. It will be reliable and if weight is an issue, hit the gym. Choose reliability and capability over weight.

Any advice on a .308 semi-auto? I was looking into a Ruger model as well as a Sig ($$). Thanks.
Just build one. These days you can find .308 lowers all over the place. Get a CMMG or Palmetto lower parts kit, VLTOR A5 buffer system, Geissele trigger, and then just buy the upper pre-assembled if you don't have a bench and torque wrench to assemble it yourself.
I've built a handful of rifles and highly recommend it. That way you get what you want from top to bottom and you won't pay extra just because it was assembled elsewhere.

Reason I asked is because (as stoleit points out), they are used in the movie 'Lone Survivor' in which the true story took place in 2005 (yes, I realize it was a movie based off the book...but I wondered how much was accurate when I saw the movie in the theaters).
I'm still waiting to try out the VCOG.
That's a Burris FastFire II. According to what I've seen and read, it was only added for the movie. I don't think guys were running reflex dots stacked at 12 or offset at 11 or 1 back then. From the images of the team they appeared to be using Aimpoint patrol, ACOG and something that is 1-8 power.

That's a good point...I'm more used to seeing the RMR on top. Definitely looks like the 3 Gun style has moved over into into the operator world.

Has to do with the height over bore axis. Offset keeps it lower for closer shots where you would otherwise have to compensate a different hold. The offset is much faster.
Many of the SO/SF community are doing this nowadays with a T1 or RMR.

Sorry that I'm a little late on the response. You list some great choices, but my reason for being so interested in VCOG is the robustness and durability of Trijicon's products and that it will (hopefully) be extended to their variable low powered scopes. I'm far from an optics expert, but I'm not familiar with any of the products you listed (such as the Leupold 1-6) that can take as much of a beating as the Trijicon when it comes to magnified optics. Having family members in Army combat MOS's and some good friends in various ground SOF roles, they all have told me their opinions on the Trijicon in terms of a 'tactical' accessory (for me it would be more 'tacticool' haha) and how it can be tossed around with little to no problems. Thoughts?
Oh, and I registered for the Fed/mil discount with Leupold, and like the others have said, damn those discounts are pretty sweet! I'll definitely be making a purchase soon!
It's true. Trijicon will take the beating but so will the others I've mentioned. I don't know if the MARSOC guys are still using the Nightforce 1-6 and 1-8 set-ups but they are bomb proof and the glass is high quality. Nightforce and Schmidt & Bender are gonna set you back though (as you probably already know).
Considering the MIL discount, the Leupold stuff is also robust and I think you'd be happy with it. What do you plan to do with it if you don't mind me asking? 3 Gun? Hunting? Classes?
Another option is the Vortex Razor HD II. It's really popular and Vortex has unmatched customer support and warranty. The only downside is the reticle is a bit thick and starts to cover more target at 250 and deeper than I care for. Then again, you can easily get stellar accuracy from a T1 or EXPS2-0 out to 400 with a solid zero, good ammo and that's 223.
If it was me, I'd get something from US Optics. They're killing it right now.
What's everyone's take on getting a 5.45x39 upper for an AR to take advantage of the availability and low price of the 5.45x39. Next to non-priced gouged 22lr, seems to be the cheapest stuff around to shoot.

If you're dead set on 5.45x39 check out Blackforge. He knows his stuff and doesn't price gouge.
Has anyone had any first hand experience with Ruger's SR-762? The few reviews I've read have a bunch of good things to say about it.
I've been researching semi-auto .308 battle rifles and on the surface $1600 (street price) seems to be one of the best values out there for a piston .308 (especially considering that I initially had my sights on a SCAR heavy).
If you have any good or bad stuff to say about Ruger's offering, I'd like to hear it.

Check out http://www.sundevilmfg.com/ . My girlfriend has one of their builds and its held up well so far. Tolerances are tighter than the Ruger and they're also lighter.

Anyone used any of the Wolf Gold .223 for target ammo? I try to stay away from the foreign stuff especially since .223 is pretty easy to get these days, but I've read some good reports about it online and have seen some pretty decent deals on 1000 rd cases of the stuff. You just never know if the guys throwing out the good reviews happen to have a few pallets of the stuff in their shop that they're trying to unload.
Its fine as long as your rifle will feed it and cycle it. Some mid length DI set ups short stroke the 55gr. stuff. Usually an issue with 14.5 and 16 middies coupled with standard H buffer. Opt for the H2 or heavier buffer and it'll most likely cycle reliably.
If anything, buy it so you can keep the brass and reload it :)

Different related question on optics: Anybody checked out the reviews written on Trijicon's new VCOG? Looks pretty damn sweet...pretty damn expensive too.
Yes, the VCOG is sweet (for 3 gun) but I can think of some others that fall in that price range or lower that are just as good, if not better. Leupold 1-6 w/ Jim Smiths reticle, Nightforce NXS, Schmidt Short Dot, Promotiv or 3point5. US Optics has also stepped up their game and making some unique prescription optics built for AR-15/10 configurations.

Not quite. You can pick up a Geissele for $200-260. I own the SSA-E ($230) and the SD3G ($260). The Tac-Con 3MR will set you back $495. Cool concept but nothing I'd drop that kind of money on.

Anybody heard/read about this new 'Tac-Con 3MR Trigger' (drop-in trigger) for the AR? It's peaked my interest and it seems like it's making a lot of noise (no pun intended) at the beginning of Shot Show. It doesn't look overly impressive in the video below, but some of the gun guys I follow are saying how awesome it is from shooting it today at Show Show. Thoughts?

Nothing to rave about. With solid fundamentals and a good trigger like the Geissele SD3G you can accomplish this speed.
I'm planning on digging through this thread extensively, but I have about $1000 in my pocket that I would love to put towards an AK. Any quick advice? I have a AR and know some basics about AKs but nowhere near the level that you all do. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

When I was a cadet things were different and actually changed while in the process. Being that Luke was 45 minutes away from school cadets were scoring rides in empty seats. It wasn't something just handed out to all cadets. Cadets who were interested had to meet specific criteria.
Basically, express interest you want a ride when it is presented. You will need a chamber card to go above 18,000. Cadets who wanted the card had to drive out of pocket to Holloman AFB in NM to get this done. Once we had the card we also had to obtain a basic flight physical on base with a flight surgeon. As mentioned, things changed while I was a cadet. Luke had a change of command and they decided to add a few things like, passing DoDmerb and clearance (because you were going along for training rides, not incentive). Basically, you were just tagging a long for a ride. You sit in the back seat and shut up so the pilots can focus on their missions.
It is a niche thing to certain DETs. That's just the way it is. Some cadets get hooked up, some don't. If you don't, apply for pilot and you'll get to fly something eventually.
As for me, my name was next on the list for my ride and two days before going up a student in the 62nd crashed and rides were shut down for a while. The student was a great member of this forum.

Correct me if I'm wrong...but if you're due in court (i.e: brought up on speeding charges), isn't it a requirement of due process for you to be NOTIFIED by a servant of the court?
Who's to say that the ticket didn't just get lost in the mail? Was it delivered via an agent of the court? Did a police officer hand it to you? Was it sent via certified mail, and then signed by you or your wife?
If not, I'd say you weren't properly served and, therefore, aren't due in court to plea/defend yourself/be convicted. The USPS screws-up ALL THE TIME.
In Arizona they come directly to your front door if you don't respond by a certain time. Even if you don't answer the door it will still be reported that you have been served. The courts don't care because to them its on record and the volume of people trying to get out of paying the man is so large they just assume you are going to pay or not. I have watched many people throw away their tickets like nothing will ever happen and then months later they find out their license is suspended.
My mother received a ticket in the mail and decided to fight it, which I think is option B here in Arizona. She called in on it right away and couldn't get ahold of anyone. Not one single person would answer the phone. She even mailed in her appeal notice and they never responded. Instead they charged her a late fee notice and THEN decided they would set up a court date. It was ridiculous. When they want money they will find a way to get it regardless if you win or not. The hassle of fighting has become so tedious and lengthy that many end up just paying the damn ticket. UFB

Not saying to do this, but here in Arizona, if you decide to fight the ticket, you will usually be shown multiple pictures and sometimes video footage of the supposed you and then questioned if that is actually you. The number one thing the judge is looking for is getting you to incriminate yourself by stating you are the one in the picture or video. A large number of people just claim they don't know or say it might be. Most of the time it gets the ticket thrown out. Call it dishonest or disloyal to the system, but many people believe its not the duty of speed cameras to catch unlawful acts, but rather, an actual cop.

Went to the range in hopes of shooting the 226 and USPc. Only got to shoot the USPc since they didn't have the 226. I still stand by what I said about the HK trigger. Went through 100 rounds trying to get use to it. I did notice a considerable difference in my groupings after 50 rounds but the trigger is something I would want to adjust. The trigger flexes to much and IMO should be more sturdy. Does anyone here have any experience with doing a trigger job on the USP Compact? I did a google search and saw a few people say they replaced the trigger with the HK Expert trigger.
While in the process I ran into an ex Green Beret and retired Sheriff who was cool enough to let me shoot his Colt 1911 Commander 45ACP which he claimed had over 25,000 rounds through it. The trigger was about 3.5 lbs and shot better than anything I've ever experienced. He also pulled out an old Astra 9mm from the 90's that was built around the Sig design. Shot almost comparable to the Colt.
I've come to the conclusion that a full metal gun will be my second purchase after the H&K assuming I adjust to the trigger or get a trigger job done. The H&K shot very accurate and didn't jam once. The payload capacity is sufficient enough and being that it is a part polymer gun, it will be better for everyday carry.

Two great guns, can't go wrong with either (other than price). I say try to get your hands on both of them at your local range and pick up the one you shoot best with.
Thanks. I'm gonna try to get out and shoot both on Friday. My girlfriend currently carries the P239 and it's a great gun which she is happy with. For myself I want to carry something a bit larger. The 226 is a little big for everyday carry, but fits my hand really well. So does the USPc though...
Bullet capacity is a +1 difference between the two and the price is the same where I will be purchasing.
One of the issues with the USPc that might be a negative factor is the trigger pull tension. Seems in DA mode you have to pull a long distance before it goes tight. It's probably something I can just get use to. IMO, the Sig is an ideal trigger but it is what I'm use to. I'll see if my local ranges carry them to demo each.

I'm looking to buy a new pistol in about 2 weeks. I've narrowed down to the Sig Sauer P226 .40 or the H&K USP Compact .40
Does anyone here have any experience with these two guns? I'd like to hear your thoughts. Thanks guys.

I didn't judge the band like a book by its cover. I saw them as an opening act with no preconceived notion of the band. They stunk. And they acted like tools. LIke I said before when I was watching them it looked like some frat boys decided to form a metal band that parodied the early 80's metal bands, until some kid told me that "no, they are serious... that's just who they are".
But thanks for proving my point when you compared them to bands that started in the 1970's not the late 2000's.
They have gone way down hill over the years. I've seen them multiple times and they use to be dead on but suck now. Check out their old stuff.

OK so I work my a$$ off this semester in AFROTC. Complete Arnold Air training. Seriously, I worked like crazy!!! AND THEN! I get this email below:...
"You are being dropped from our program due to receiving a “D“ in AS200 class. According to AFROTCI 36-2011, the regulation states that “cadets must receive a “C-“ or better in AS classes and LLAB. When the cadet receives a grade of “D” or “F” in AS class, the cadet must be dismissed from the program (non-contract cadets).”
I am NOT getting kicked out. I have no idea what to do. I had a B in the class before the final. The only reason I failed is because I got no sleep before the final and failed it. Anyone know what on earth I can do? Are there any waivers?????? I have no idea what to do. Please excuse me if I sound like I am going off. I am just really upset about this and need advise.
Shit happens. People get thrown from ROTC all the time. I would advise you to stay calm through this and take it slow.
The only thing you can do is see the cadre and CALMLY ask if their is any solutions. If their isn't, say thank you and leave. Making excuses will make you sound like a bitch who can't hack it in the real world. Own your mistake and say, if I stay this won't happen again. I messed up.
OTS is still a option for your future. Along with the other branches of the service who're also kicking ass...

Here's the part i don't think has been discussed, was he even likely to be on the front line? I don't think so because his job was medic related, so it wasn't like he was going to be shooting at fellow Muslims. And trust me, he knew his job. I highly doubt he believed he would be killing muslims, in fact, I highly doubt he'd have felt more guilty about doing his job there rather than here. Unless he was just to cowardice to deal with the fact that he would have more of his patients coming directly from the war (as it was reported he had heard so many horror stories and was scared of the war for that reason) and that all he would be doing is dealing with horror stories. I really think he just saw this as a prime opportunity to take his role as a "muslim" in his mind (not that all muslims believe this, but I believe he did, or he wouldn't have done it) and take out combatants that would soon be in the fight before they even got to the fight.
Therefor I would put it as Terrorism as described by Stoliet. I really think also, his posts online about being compared to a suicide bomber/guy who jumps on a greanade, are more evidence that he was attacking, not just mentalling breaking down. And thus I also believe he was doing it as an extremist muslim... maybe not from the thought that "all non-muslims must die", but at least from the "i'm going to take them out before they take out my fellow muslim's" attitude.
I would doubt he was tied to any terrorist agencies (other than going to the same mosque as the hi-jackers from 9/11 as reported, but i guess like every muslim in D.C. goes to that mosque occasionally). But I still see it as a religious attack, even if it was "pre-emptive defense" of fellow muslims as I describe.
I was reading a article from New York Times called Painful Stories Take a Toll on Military Therapists. It said, officials say that in 2007, there were 200 such specialists serving more than 130,000 troops, driving between bases on bomb-rigged roads.
This statement caught my attention, as I have met therapists who've been transported back and forth from multiple bases on dangerous roads and the prospect of never knowing when you're going to die, scares the shit out of some people. To add to that, they are seeing soldiers over issues of death happening in war... like being involved in the detonation of a road side bomb.
Sad how this Major decided to handle himself for what ever reasons he had, but their is no doubt that the Army is behind on sufficient help. Just this year, 117 soldiers on AD were reported to have committed suicide. The Army has only 408 psychiatrists - military, civilian and contractors - serving about 553,000 AD troops around the world. Imagine trying to serve the masses with not enough time and resources? Most of the time Army psychiatrists are only prescribing medication rather than working with patients using counseling methods for rehabilitation.
I recently had a insightful conversation with a close friend of mine who is a successful therapist dealing with all issues. I asked her what it's like dealing with peoples problems on a daily level? She said, it's heavy, but more than that, it's hard to bring in a patient and listen to overwhelming circumstances and problems and then walk them to the front and completely let go of everything you just heard to do it over again with a new patient. Do this everyday, all day long, and it can really mess up GOOD people. I personally know of a AF officer who did this for 6 years AD and never wants to work in therapy ever again.
I have no clue the underlying intentions of this officer who killed all these innocent people, but I wouldn't just pull a terrorist card because of a name, belief, or social norm idea being thrown around.
I hope the investigation for this story is revealed for all to see and that he's given a suffice punishment.

I happened to see his so called "apology" last night on Jay Leno and it was a disaster. I think it's safe to say that Kanye is completely brain dead. His ability to hold a consecutive conversation is worse than Jay-Z. Does anybody have a youtube of this to share? The guy completely locks up when he's asked how his mother would feel about his actions. It's a classic.
On a side note, Taylor is a really nice girl that doesn't just carry herself as clueless on television, but in person as well. I got the chance to talk to her on the set of American Idol and she doesn't have a mean bone in her body. I'm guessing she's over it already.

Hey all, I am currently a Nav starting to build my AD UPT package for next year FY2011. I have noticed that the info for AFOQT third time testing has been removed from AFI 36-2605 Attach 2. Has anyone here gotten a waiver despite this? Any guidance on getting a waiver? I am worried that I will not be as competitive because I was an idiot in ROTC four years ago. I appreciate the help!

Check AFI 36-2006. I'm not sure if they use this on AD, but it definitely applies to ROTC/OTS. If you wanted a third try in ROTC you had to have sharp grades and a commander to go to bat for you. In rare cases you see people who speak a second language get a third try or waive the test altogether. I know two cadets that got away with this all while maintaining a low C in every class (including ROTC which should tell you something...). They simply threw together a spiffy memorandum and sent it off to AFROTC HQ with a stamp of approval from the WC.
I don't know who you can see on AD, but if that AFI applies AD, I'd assume your chances are there and hopefully you've behaved and earned a good reputation on AD so someone will recommend you.
If your a NAV on AD, do you really have to take the AFOQT again to apply for pilot? If that's true, boy the AF needs some real help.

My Mother came in my room frantically to pull me out of bed to see it on live television. When the second plane hit I was either in music class or still at home. Don't remember. I just knew something was off when I heard a plane hit the pentagon. Sad day.

I am a regretful owner of a modified 2001 GTI 1.8T. That car has been nothing but a pile... Kind of like the Nazi's that made it. I do NOT recommend a VW for the following reasons.
1. They are over priced to buy and if something breaks the parts are a arm and leg.
2. Just to fix the car yourself you will need tools made JUST for your VW. I have acquired many in the last year and those cost a load of money too. To make the heap of shit higher, fixing the car is brain surgery. Know what you're doing or expect to spend more money/time replacing something else that wasn't the problem.
3. Any general mechanic that tells you he can fix it is selling you a steaming load of shit. If you are insane enough to take what is going to be a fortune to a mechanic, you will need to take it to a experienced VW mechanic. They aren't always simple. When you run 50 codes from a VAG-COM and take a look at how to fix them all, you can buy a whole new car...
If you want to fort the river and fix it yourself, you will save money (assuming you know the problem and have the tools/time). I would recommend the VWVORTEX forum for deep issues. If they don't know how to help you, they'll point you in the right direction.
BTW, what appears to be the problem? Do you have any codes? If your car is still under it's warranty, you can usually take it to your local VW dealer and they are suppose to fix it, but if you aren't I caution you now. Dealer mechanics spend time standing around with their thumb up the ass while you pay for it. Something that'll cost $100 to fix on your own will cost you three times that at a dealership because they can and I have watched it happen.

There's a big fad with short barreled pistols lately and I really don't understand it. If people are just collecting guns for the sake of collecting safe queens, by all means. I've never seen a job that can't be accomplished with a 14.5 or 16 standard. Besides that, why go pistol/shorty and lose the leverage of a 6 position buffer tube at full extension? That aside, tactically you're losing velocity, accelerating gas port corrosion and ultimately, cutting the life of the barrel by a good 75%. Short barrels used in SOF are mission specific for assaulters. No kidding I've seen barrels get chucked every 3 or 4 runs. Sure, that's largely due to high pressured and heavy (77gr) ammo, but really, the industry hype over this set-up is a fad. Not to mention the quality control of barrel gas port diameter being so variable that gas pressures spike over the short life of the barrel. Chronograph it and you'll see what I'm talking about.
Phase5 makes the longest "pistol stock" I've seen. It still sucks to shoulder if you're used to a open stock at 6 position.
