  1. *Waiting with my popcorn to find out how I'm going to eat crow on this one*

Apparently I misjudged the amount of sarcasm this board can handle. Accidents can happen to anyone, but there is a difference between an accident and things like landing at the wrong airport. That's called being an idiot. My point was that I suspect this is a case of the latter.

  2. Everyone has incidents and everyone ######s up. Lets wait for actual details of this one before we dust off and rehash our standard upgrade/training/HUD/AAD/PME arguments.

This mantra gets rolled out every incident, maybe our crews are actually ######ing up? I'm tired of this attitude. We are professional aviators, when did we lose the ability to call people out? Every incident I hear the "it could happen to anyone crowd" fire up the propaganda machine. Sorry to burst your bubble, but it won't happen to me because I take my job seriously and still expect excellence out of my crew. These aren't act of god incidents, landing short, wrong airport, no gear are all pilot error. And before you say microburst, reference ground speed check, do we not look at this stuff anymore?

  3. Maybe we should use stricter criteria than year group and hours to determine upgrades?

IMO the C-17 has a growing number of CPs flying around coded as ACs and IPs. Get enough of these on one crew and you get buffoonery like we've been seeing.

  4. Rationalization of Victimhood. Ugh.

    My reply: Booker T. Washington.

If you've ever read any of Levitt's work, he's just trying to figure out how things tick. He's the guy who explained the drop in crime rate in the 90's was because of Roe vs Wade.

  5. I wonder if "Duwayne" was the one shot? What a horrible life sentence of name for a kid, huh? Nobody named Duwayne is going to be the Nobel laureate for physics or become President of the US.

Steven Levitt, of Freakonomics fame, would argue that it's not the name. It's that the kid's parents were stupid enough to name him that in the first place, so he was already doomed to failure because of poor genetics and a horrible home life...

  6. It's too much airplane, too much inertia, too much risk to squeeze in maneuvers or events you didn't plan and pre-think ahead of time.

Please let me know how this attitude works for you next time your airplane decides to hand you an emergency you didn't plan for ahead of time, or the next time you venture through a few fields with less than awesome controllers (UAFM or OKAS come to mind) .

You do realize this is pretty much the only reason pilots haven't all been replaced by remote control yet right? We get paid for that one time shit hits the fan and there needs to be a warm body in the seat to safely recover the airplane and/or pax. You can train a monkey to pull back on the stick. The growing trend I see is "pilots" with the attitude the above statement exudes who never challenge themselves and never stray from the script.

When shit actually does hit the fan they will be found severely wanting.

  7. Pretty sure all of the above tasks are ultimately the PIC's job.

This. If you can't determine if you are landing on the correct airfield, why were you given the A code? All mitigating factors aside this is pretty basic. I've had some pretty epic helmet fires, but put the gear down and land on the correct piece of asphalt I still managed to pull off without much angst.

  8. At a remote C-17 stage location in SWA...one of my crew members was chastised for not turning off the water between swipes of the razor. The reason was "You are wasting water and WE just put in a $6 million dollar pond to support water usage"...UFB

My solution? Get banned from said location. If we all do it the Chiefs will have no where to go.

  9. I think anyone who has flown under the Tac C2 in OEF has earned their hostile fire/combat pay, tanker or not. Just going out there every day and not getting killed by ATC or some UAV pilot who doesnt understand how to set his altimeter properly should be enough to warrant the pay.

I guess if I had my way if your shop is not manned 7 days a week, no hostile fire pay for you (Just keeping it real for our maintainers)

I've never really had serious issues with ATC, I'd say they do quite well for what they have to deal with. Now the I Suck At Flying traffic is a whole separate issue. Between them not being able to make a radio call under 1 minute in length or follow basic directions like climb and MAINTAIN, sometimes I wonder how they don't get vectored into a mountain. We should get HFP and CZTE anytime we are in the same airspace as these idiots.

  10. Most crashes result from excessive negative vertical velocity combined with an unsuitable landing surface. The others are usually caused by excess closure.

Doesn't the latter cause the former? Therefore 100% of crashes would be caused by "excessive negative vertical velocity combined with an unsuitable landing surface".

  11. I could argue the merits of pilots receiving HFP and CZTE from both sides convincingly. The real issue anyone trying to get this taken away should be concerned with is retention. If you take away the per diem and HZTE, you make working a civilian job a lot more attractive. If I were to lose the money I make from flying trips I can guarantee that the day my commitment is up I will be out. A big part of the reason all the deployments and 200+ days away a year are tolerable is because I am essentially compensated for them with per diem and HZTE. Take that away and the abuse our families receive becomes a whole lot less tolerable and makes the decision to get out a whole lot easier.

  12. when in doubt, find a picture of a hot chick (with guns = bonus), make a poster = positive reaction, and positive rep points.

Your way = negative and full of fail

I'm confused at your poster, I thought she was a good girl because of her excellent sense of fashion, wonderful figure and love of guns. What do the earnings have to do with it...

and to legitimize my post, I give you boobs.

  13. You guys arguing about what's "vag" or not in a tactical approach has got to have all the fighter guys on here alternately laughing or rolling their eyes.... :nob:

A case of internet  around the house to stop the pain....

Glad to give the pointy nose types something to laugh at, those who have actually flown against a C-17 (guessing there aren't to many outside Red Flag types or the Fresno Guard) aren't laughing quite as hard as the rest and have a bit of respect for its unique handling characteristics.

Besides, I still think a 17 at 60 degrees looks pretty damn cool.

  14. only if you're not a vag about it. if you're not doing 300+ and quick roll to at least 45 degrees of bank, you officially classify as vag material.

I would make that 45 into a 60 and then agree, descending break also qualifies one for vag status.

  15. What is with all of the deportations lately? Nothing caps a 20+ hour day like getting told the scum bags at immigration said you failed to out process properly last time when you know for a fact you did. I got off lucky and just hopped on the same jet I came in on and went back to Rammstein to wait for the rest of my crew to catch up. I've heard of people having to ride a 130 to Ali and back. Like I wanted to be in your worthless god forsaken country anyways.

Why do we stand for this shit, it is blatant harassment. Someone seriously screwed the pooch when it came to negotiating the lease that made us the Qatari AF. I never leave base, they should be at the gate checking people that do, not adding 2 hours of pain to an already long day.

    :flipoff:

  16. I'm not sure how or by what act of God I am not on the CGO list, but it looks like I am missing out on a lot of hilarious spam.

Can't speak for MXG but the OG probably won't be showing up because we will all be trying to get an actual mission between all of the exercises we are constantly doing so everyone who isn't MXG and OG can get their shit together before an :vomit: ORI...

Glad we requisitioned our table from DBC though which is now sitting in our bar, rumor has it they didn't have room for it anymore.
