Is the speed hold at 202 normal? That seems really fast? Is there an auto-throttle type system too or does it control pitch? Is the vHUD IFR rated? Can you pop the visor up and fly off of some kind of display in the cockpit?

    Thanks for the capes brief!

No, the F-35 HMD has NOT BEEN endorsed as a primary flight reference (PFR) for IFR flight. AFFSA looked at it years ago but efforts to endorse it stopped for unknown reasons and no further efforts to endorse it have been made.

  2. Unlike the B-2 line where they destroyed the equipment, the manufacturing equipment for the F-22 was maintained in "storage".  There is actually a  "How to build a Raptor in 69,000,000 easy steps" manual tucked away somewhere.  LM took detailed notes on each step in the manufacturing process with the specific intent of having the know-how later in case they ever did re-open the line.  It was an interesting tour to hear them talk about how meticulously detailed they were being with each step...to include taking pictures.  Although I agree that actually opening the line back up is not likely and would be exceptionally expensive.

  3. In the end, I didn't have to convince anyone. The interesting part of this event for me was this was my call. The OG/CC, WG/CC, Functional, had no say in this process. This went from my Sq/CC direct to AFPC and some GS-07 set my DOS as 1 day after my UPT ADSC. A few weeks later, my assignment was cancelled.

AFI 36-2110 Table 2.9 Rule 8 - O's may select a DOS not later than the date they complete there longest ADSC...the actual DOS approved will be based on needs of the AF.

AFI 36-2110 Para 2.30.2.2.1 Which says O's with indefinite DOS selected for PCS...an ADSC incurring event...who have an ADSC greater than which they would incur for the event which selected are not eligible to execute a 7-day option. Meaning I was eligible!

    .

  4. I just 7-day opted an assignment with 19 months remaining on my UPT ADSC. I didn't want to incur the CONUS PCS ADSC of 24 months. My DOS was set the day after my UPT ADSC expires!

Everyone from the Group/CC on down, to include the assignments guy at AFPC was adamant I couldn't 7-day opt....but I did!

Assignment cancelled and told to remain in place to finish out my ADSC.

  5. We certainly can agree...but you said it. Its the LAW and is binding on everyone. The Airline Safety and Federal Aviation Administration Extension Act of 2010 (Pub. L. 111-216) to be exact. This is a direct result of Congress knowing what is best for all of us. When Colgan Air 3407 crashed and Congress said they would "fix the problem" this law was not what the FAA wanted but again, the Administrator has no choice and must create regulations (via Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations) to execute this law.

If you don't like it, petition your Member of Congress to change it, but the FAA has intrepited and applied Public Law 111-216, as it has to.

  6. There is no provision in the current final rule today allowing for a "mil-comp ATP" written. The FAA administrator, Michael Huerta, has said recently that the FAA has applied the full latitude it believes it has the authority to do as granted by Congress. The military gets the reduced hours required for a restricted ATP certificate (750 total hours for military pilots). I believe that is the best deal military will get.

In working with the FAA on this, they believe that it would take another act of Congress for any additional changes to the ATP rules. As such, I don't see any possibility of a mil-comp ATP.

  7. There will be NO military "exemption" from the ATP Certification Training Program (ATPCTP) requirement. This is based on the final rule for The Airline Safety and Federal Aviation Administration Extension Act of 2010 (Pub. L. 111-216).

After 1 August, everyone who wants to take the ATP written for an ATP - Multi-engine certificate will have to show proof of graduation from a FAA approved course. There are several courses with the FAA for final review and approval. Expect to start seeing those courses being advertised soon.

The ATP test will change from the 121/135 format of today to a SEL/MEL format. If you get an ATP ASEL and then want to add AMEL later, you would still have to complete the ATPCTP and take the ATP MEL written exam.

The practical test requirements have not changed.

  8. AIS is a full FAA testing center. They can administer any FAA exam.

Hey GW, feel free to call AIS and discuss with them what the intent of the course should be. AIS is for pilots by pilots and its constantly evolving and is always welcome to constructive feedback to make it better.
