Would be interesting to see a final summary of the AMP Program, from start to finish.  Especially a total summation of how much money was put into it, and what exactly was gotten out of it.

Even though the full-up AMP program was never completed, I'm sure there still were some benefits gleaned (AMP-light, mods installed on J-models, etc).  But it sure seems like it was primarily a jobs program for Lockheed, Boeing, and the C-130 Program Office.

Just the way I heard it, and is probably bullshit

When the Guard and Reserves got their beloved C130s in the 80s and 90s Congress could not get the money to fund a massive buy from Lockheed that would provide a few hundred identical Herks.  So Congress told Lockheed...build them anyhow.  Every time 8 of them come off the line, we will buy whatever you got.  What came off the line was "whatever" Lockheed was building at the time.

Then in 2000 when the Air Force went looking for AMP, Lockheed knew better than to bid low.  There are 24 sub-variants of variants.  Boeing wasn't as keen on this and their low bid got them the award...something like $7 million per aircraft.  Lockheed laughed.

So it started.  Cost overruns meant few aircraft to be modified, which meant more cost per tail.  Soon it was $20 million per tail (a new herk only cost $30-$40 million).  ADS-B requirements emerged that AMP didn't even address.  AMP wouldn't even keep us sustainable.  We need new engines and props.  8.33 radios, ADS-B.  In addition, foreign C-130 operators had already solved the avionics issue for just a few bucks with off-the-shelf parts.

So the Air Force wanted to kill AMP, but the NDAA kept shoving it down their throats.  Finally the Air Force won by calling the off-the-shelf parts "AMP Increment 1" and Congress was satisfied.

So maybe we spent $400 million on program development and R&D, but it didn't end up in an airplane.  It was 20 year old technology, that we got when we put foreflight on our ipad.  Amp was cool, but not worth the money.  I wouldn't call it a jobs program either, just a timing problem.

Once again, take it for a grain of salt.

  2. reviving an old thread I guess....

anyone hearing rumors about AMP increment 1 coming around?  J models instead of AMP?  3.5 engine upgrades?

Last article about amp (amp light) is 9 months old:

Apparently Wyoming is flying MAFFS with the engine mod:

  3. Those old plastic sleeves get pretty bad with revisions to the point that you can no longer read the writing through the ink residue that is worn off the previous revision. Further more, my checklist weighs more than my ipad and otterbox combo...

I've seen a few units with some water proof / tear proof checklists pages that you can write on with a pencil, no smearing, etc. Those checklists were about 1/4 the weight.

Anyone know about these? who prints this sort of thing?

    Thanks in advance

  4. sounds like for Reservists we won't be able to use ROTH TSP until 2013. I am not able to set it up in mypay yet. Any Guard/Reserve guys able to set this up yet?

    from dfas.mil:

Reservists and National Guardsmen start dates for Roth TSP deductions have now changed and will occur during 2013. According to DFAS, this timeline ensures systems changes and electronic deductions meet all of the requirements of the law and the Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board. Work continues as the interim solution for reserve components members did not meet FRTIB requirements.
  5. Not much has changed except Billeting now charges $39 per day, so if you want to refuse, you have a few more bucks to work with.

As for Per Diem...the FTU has generated a letter directing a combination of a Proportional Meal Rate and a Government Meal Rate...it goes like this:

    3. In accordance with para U4155 of the JFTR, I direct all TDY students receive PMR per diem while

billeting in government quarters for half of their TDY duration and receive the Government Meal Rate

(GMR) for the other half for their TDY at Little Rock AFB. Those refusing government quarters will

also be paid at the same rate; 50 percent PMR, 50 percent GMR. All other cases will be at the rate

determined by the order issuing authority and finance.

Getting a non-A letter doesn't seem to be as easy as it used to. The billeting lady says they have been blocking off rooms for TDY students.

Sorry, no information for you on the Links. Just trying to keep updated information on here.

  6. "2" - because it's true.

it would be interesting to look at the training reg for a specific platform from 30 years ago to now, to have some actual numbers to compare currency requirements to.

compare that to accident rates, airframe losses, etc.

  7. I'm a Reservist that just recently PCS'd to my squadron. My HHG is currently in storage for up to 90 days (early December). I am supposed to go on a deployment in January. I'm told the active duty doesn't do this, but I've heard that for a single guy, AFRC will pay for storage during a deployment. If this is the case, I'm considering postponing finding a rental property until after the deployment to save a little money.

Has anyone ever done this or heard of this?

yeah, talk to your TMO people that handle your PCS paperwork. They will store it, but only while you are on orders. It can be a pain when you are a reservist, since your order probably only go to the end of the fiscal year, then will be extended, and extended, and extended. will have to make sure that the extensions get to that TMO.

it doesn't matter if your single or married...they will store, temp controlled, and will pick it up/ drop it off at your house.

  8. I am a 1LT Guard Bum on the Herk.

I fly about twice a week, I have my 1 UTA weekend per month, and I usually pick up 1 cross country per month (probably average 3 days of orders). Then, I play the guard game, and "make up" a drill I might have missed, or I was already on orders for, I pick up a couple of days of orders to help out in the squadron, etc.

I looked at my pay history over the last several months and I average about $3000 per month. with a low month around $2000, and a higher month around $4000. I think this is pretty normal for most Guard Bum Pilot/Navs. I know some guys get sweet deals with the temp tech pay, and lots of orders...but that is probably not realistic for the majority.

Hope that helps for someones financial planning. I remember wondering how to set my budget before starting the guard gig.

  9. I just winged in Corpus and I found out that I'll be TDY to LRAFB enroute to my PCS (Dyess). I know that I'll retain Corpus BAH while I'm in Lock Rock, but what are my other entitlements as far as per diem (off-base)? Will I get full per diem or partial? According to the DOD per-diem web site, full per-diem for Little Rock i $82 for lodging and $54 for M&I, thus making "full per-diem" $136. However everyone I talk to says that full per-diem is $34. I don't know where they are getting that number.

Since government meals are available at Little Rock, the per diem rate that is authorized is only about $10 per day (if you are on base). If billeting on base is full, and they force you off base (non availability slip) then you get the off base rate of $33 per day. If there IS availability on base, and you choose to move off base anyhow, then you are only entitled to the on-base rate of $10 per day. BUT, if you go to student admin, they have a letter that directs the proportional meal rate since our schedules don't actually permit us using the dining hall, and then you will get the $33 per day while living off base without a non-avail slip.

and you will still get the $27 per day for lodging in addition. so $810 per month for an off-base apartment.

  10. tas, nacws, whatever. Wouldn't you rather be in an airplane with one, rather than nothing? no one should ever rely on one, but it is nice to have a picture. The T-44c has a tas, and the image is worth a lot on low levels. even the nacws in the t-6 could help you determine where to look.
