  1. Santa Fe is a much better ski area than Sandia. Sandia is very close to ABQ though. You can ride the tram from ABQ up the mountain and be skiing in 12 minutes. Santa Fe is more diverse than Sandia, with blacks and I think 2 double blacks. Sandia has runs labeled black, but nothing there really is, it is a very mellow place to ride.

  2. I dunno man, congress is putting up alot of resistance to retiring those ~250 or so fighters and talking about even buying some more 16's/15's replace the one's who've reached the entire of their service length until the 35's come online and 22's reach full capacity.

Do you have any references to where you heard that congress is putting up resistance to this retirement? I'd love to read about it if you do.

  3. Wow, you don't see that every day. Congrats and good luck.

    Thanks for the good words!

Just curious... what was the argument/sticking point that made the FEB keep you around? Was it the improper syllabus implementation as you mentioned earlier?

You are exactly correct, improper syllabus implementation. Gotta read those regulations no matter how much it sucks.

  4. I am facing a flight evaluation board for washing out of RTU, on of course what I feel are terms of improper syllabus implementation. If anyone has any experience or knows of anyone with any experience in dealing with a FEB please post here or contact me. Any help would be greatfully appreciated.

  5. Dude, don't listen to any of the negative posts. I got my slot with a fighter unit without a PPL and no prior military experience. You definitely are your own salesman in this game.

I do think that becoming a doctor and going through training might not sound to reasonable though, expecially prior to residency. You have to put a lot of time in the Guard to fly after training and from what I have heard, a residency is pretty freakin time consuming.

Wilco, there are applicants who have thousands of hours and there are some who are commissioned special ops guys... all with super scores. There are unit members with great scores! Anything is possible, but I wouldn't be settling for an AFOQT pilot score under 80.

Just my opinion from my own selection (fighter unit), in order of importance:

    1. Getting to know the pilots, unit members, and Squadron Commander. Gotta know people.

    2. Being a unit member (I wasn't)

    3. Great scores

    4. Anything else.

    Just my .02.

I agree with the order of importance. I was selected for a FW as well, not being a member of the unit and we had other guys apply that had steller military careers. My pilot score was only 78 though and my PCSM was 91.
  7. Well I haven't served on a board, but I did get my slot in December with a fighter squadron as a civilian with no prior military service and or interviews with anyone else.

The resume is pretty important and I would reccomend finding a way to put everything on it that helps describe who you are. They are very concerned with this and whether or not you'll fit into the squadron. My unit didn't really care that I didn't have my private (50 hours though), but I've heard differently about other units. We had an entire weekend to attend for the interview process and it all boiled down to just letting them know who we are. It kind of sucks that the selection critia can be so vague, but it's the truth. If you have more questions feel free to spit them out.

What unit are you applying to?

  8. Just for anyone elses information, I just found out that I am getting my FC1 physical done through the local VA hospital and my Guard unit. I guess they split up the tasks between each other. Oh, and they are going to go ahead and use my hearing test from MEPS, but not the vision stuff, unfortunatly, I'll have to pass that hard ass depth perception test all over again.

  9. I have a pilot slot with a Guard Unit and I am trying to get my physical done. I just went and did the MEPS commisioning physical and now the recruiter is telling me I have to go to the VA hospital to do another physical that will be combined with the MEPS one to make it a flying physical.

Does this make any sense to anyone?

Also, does Brooks redue the entire flight physical when you get down there?

I'm worried because I barely passed the depth perception test at MEPS, luckily I had a forgiving technician, and I am worried about having to pass it again.

  10. B-O,

You got me all wrong, I definitely look forward to deployment. I want to see the world, no matter what part they would send me too. I know for other reserve type postitions, people don't get to deploy as much as they would like.

I guess I'm just a curious guy and was just wondering what it is like working a civilian job and flying for the ANG at the same time? It seems like it would be pretty tough flying planes and then having to come back to some, relatively, normal job.
