  1. Can anyone validate that the funds will be sent to the family?

It's a fundraiser that loops back to the Red River Valley Fighter Pilots Association for his wife and two girls, who will both be in college in a few years. The link has been shared by pretty much all of the Barnestormers on Facebook and I think it was started by the 131 FS SQ/CC. It'll go to a great cause.

Also, Moose was a really awesome guy in every aspect of life. I really looked up to him and I only knew him for about 6 months. I can't imagine what his wife and girls are going through. Godspeed, Sir.

  2. Thread revival. I'm most likely going to be the SRO of my UPT class and I'm looking for specific, up-to-date info on the best way to dessiminate information.

I was planning on getting everyone on a WhatsAPP account, making a private facebook page, and getting a digital dropbox for the flight. Does anyone know a good web site for a digital drop box? Does anyone have any other suggestions, etc for how to use the interwebs and the modern technologies to make our lives easier? I'll be going to ENJJPT, so are there issues with foreign dudes not having smart phones or phones with international numbers?

Does anyone have any advice for helping out the SnackO? Is there a Costco that everyone goes to or will we have to order corn and jalapenos from www.popcornplaza.com? What about UPT bling? What's the standard stuff that everyone orders (pint glasses, zaps, shirts, coins, etc)? And how much were the squadron dues (just $69 on the first day or something)?

Also, does anyone have any advice on the best way to divide up the flight jobs and labor in the flight (3 SnackOs, 1 photographer, 2 class video dudes, 1 tax collector, etc). And what were the most time-consuming queep jobs/tasks?

My gameplan is to have a meeting Day 0 where we get all the queep figured out so that nobody gets screwed with a disproportionate amount of work 6-9 months later and then roll that right into a keg party. I'd rather get all this stuff squared away in advance so that it doesn't cut into our studying/drinking time during UPT.

  3. So by your reasoning, securing and protecting our actual homeland can take a back seat to protecting South Korea? Because if there was a sudden spike in the usual carnage south of the border and suddenly a 200,000 Mexicans suddenly just pushed their way into San Diego, that would be no big deal?

Hundreds of Illegals storm California Border Patrol

Here's another little gem about how security on the border with Mexico should be a second thought.

Transnational gangs form alliance with Mexican cartel, becoming more sophisticated in trafficking drugs, guns, people

“A nation that cannot control its borders is not a nation.”

    President Ronald Reagan

Meh, they've got a Marine airbase in San Diego, so I think the great city of Ron Burgundy is safe from harm.

This does bring up a really interesting point though. The way I see it, people feel bad for illegal immigrants who sneak across the border in search of a better life (valid point), but rather than pressing the issue on the US Citizenship and Immigration Services to reform the US's stringent immigration policies so that people can legally come to this country for work and other legitimate reasons, they pressure the Feds to simply not defend the border. So now our border is a sieve while a full-on war between drug cartels armed with Army-grade weapons/equipment and the slightly corrupt Mexican government is raging right on the other side... Over drugs that are going into our country. I have a friend who grew up in Mexico and he won't go home, even to visit his family over the holidays, because the random murders and kidnappings have gotten out of control.

  4. In AFG the kids crowded around our MRAPs like they were ice cream trucks to beg for anything we'd be willing to give them (or anything they could steal). Keep in mind that most of these kids are ADHD spoiled brats, who are one of 69 brothers and sisters, with little to no adult supervision or parenting. So they basically run amuck and do whatever they want until an Afghan adult comes along and literally beats them into compliance. Now, imagine a mob of 100 or so kids, all going crazy because Santa Claus has come to town (seriously, most of these kids have never tasted Gatorade or eaten a bag of M&Ms before), and some dick throws them some Rip Its. I remember looking back into that village as we were leaving and seeing columns of smoke raising up from various points around where we had the shurra. Now, it was probably something standard, like the elders were signalling the Taliban we were leaving, but it made me laugh because it painted the mental image that by giving a mob of Afghan kids like 4 or 5 Rip Its, we had caused a mass riot that was destroying the village.

And now Rip Its are gone ::pour one out for my homies::

  5. Can anyone comment on how exactly Air Force UPT produces a more well rounded pilot than Army WOFT?

For a start, UPT's goal is to produce fixed wing pilots. Approximately a (singular) dude from each UPT class goes to helicopters and, even then, they truck over to the Army at track select, halfway through UPT.

  6. A good tip for better cooked Jalaps is to squeeze the excess juice and water out of them before you throw them in.

I forgot to mention this. This is absolutely crucial; moisture makes the corn tough.

We did make a successful batch of Jack Daniels jalapeno corn today. The recipe isn't perfect, but it's definitely a starting point.

Dump in 1 solo cup of oil with 2 shots of Jack. Heat up at least 10 minutes and ensure all of the moisture has boiled off (no more popping sounds)

Fill solo cup with drained jalapenos, dump in 1 shot of Jack, dump the contents of the solo cup into the oil. If the oil doesn't melt the solo cup a little bit when you dump in the jalapenos, it's not hot enough.

Let the jalapenos cook at least 10 minutes, then add 2 solo cups of corn with spices into the kettle.

    Wait about 8 minutes.

    Profit.

There's a very faint Jack flavor to it;12 hours corn-to-cockpit.

  7. We made bacon jalapeno corn for the first time about a week ago and here's what we did:

dump in 1 solo cup of oil and let it heat up for about 7 minutes. The hotter the oil the better the corn will pop

add 1/2 lb of thick cut, diced, juicy, infidel bacon. Wait 3 minutes

add 1 cup of jalapenos. Wait about 5 minutes (until the jalapenos are singed)

quickly dump in 2 cups of corn with a mound of Slap Ya Mama Cajun Seasoning (order it on Amazon) and Lawry's Salt

    Wait about 15 minutes

    Profit.

Granted we have a corn machine that's old enough to buy smokes and booze, but the above recipe works for us.

Oh and someone in our squadron mentioned throwing shots of Jack, or similar, into the corn kettle... Has anyone tried this? I imagine the alcohol burns off and leaves the smokey, whiskey taste, but I'm also slightly worried about blowing up the corn machine.

  8. Anyone see Anchorman 2?

If you really liked Anchorman 1, you'll probably like Anchorman 2. Same humor, different jokes, some stuff was recycled for familiarity, but it wasn't like Hangover 2/3 where there was no new material. It's a lot funnier if you're drunk, but if you're not a Will Ferrell fan, you should probably rent it.

  9. "Before service in Afghanistan Lauren Kay Johnson, a lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, said she was a fun-loving woman who would organize potluck and karaoke nights for friends.

But when she returned from her nine month-deployment in March 2010, the Seattle native struggled to get to grips with civilian life as the memories of war haunted her."

    http://www.dailymail...ional-toll.html

Synopsis: PA officer deployed to Afghanistan for 9 month...apparently her only deployment of her career. Now she says she has a hard time coping with her experiences, which included limited Internet service, bad food, and the threat of possible attacks. She stated sometimes she can talk about it, but often she can't.

As someone who's been deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan for a total of more than 29 months (to include 12 months as an advisor) and been shot at, this comes across to me as a joke.

How the ###### is this news?!

So the worst thing that happened is she's a bitch when she's standing in line at the local Shitty Wok? I fail to see how this distinguishes her from everyone else in the takeout line.

This is all just a BS distraction for what's really important:

    Let's play a game!!!

    Finish this statement!

I dove into my new job, moved into my first grownup apartment, and adjusted way too easily to the Gulf Coast bar scene. But socially, I struggled. Everyone I knew was two time zones away. In an environment where relationships are rank-dependent, I was one of two young officers in my office and the only unmarried one. Without the social Velcro of a classroom or work setting, I was clueless on how to make friends.

So I did what any single, lonely girl would do:

  10. Don't get me wrong, I think our DHS soldiers deserve the best equipment available when we send them into harm's way fighting the enemy, but why not equip them with surplus serviceable weapons and vehicles that have already been war-proven?

    111130fortbenning_lg.jpg

MRAPs roll over pretty easily and they're a bitch to get in and out of quickly. Unless the 'enemy' has Mk-19s and 500 lb IEDs, I think these cops would be better off with a service van that has a sliding door, retrofitted with some ballistic panels. Or hell, give them a bunch of the up-armored HMMWVs that we're selling for scrap.

Palace Front from Active Duty May '13

    Got orders sometime that week

    AUG 14 at Sheppard

My unit told Chip I'd leave tomorrow, given the opportunity. They couldn't get me a spot in line for UPT until I was officially no longer on AD. I'll be under the age limit, but I'll be a Captain with 5 years of service next May... Is this an issue?

I'm just happy to be here, but definitely hoping for quicker dates.

  12. Kid, here's the bottom line, prison rules don't apply here. If you come in guns ablazin' you won't earn everyone's respect because they think 'whoa I can't push this kid around,' you'll piss them off because they'll think that instead of listening, you're going to spend a bunch of time defending your bruised ego, which they don't give a ###### about (frankly, no one does). Whatever the case may be, they've been there, done that, you haven't, and they're speaking from experience that far exceeds any scope of your life. Anything you say that's not just a humble affirmation that you received the message is a painful waste of time. You were wrong or screwed up, admit it, you're human and made a mistake. Mistakes can be forgiven, just learn quickly and move on, no one cares about why you made the mistake because those are just excuses. But being able to quickly understand your mistakes, learn from them, and not repeat them is a skill. If they do care, they'll ask. Some guys are going to be sarcastic dicks. That's called humor. If you're insecure or have a fragile ego, it'll get to you. If you get pissed off when someone rips on you instead of thinking its funny and joking back then that's a dead giveaway that you have an ego/insecurity/attitude problem, which is like blood in the water around guys who are professional military flight crew. If you want to have a back-and-forth about your feelings and why you did what you did, get a girlfriend. Then you can spend hours discussing a subtle non-verbal expression so she'll stop being pissed off and start putting out again. If you want to be a decent officer candidate, then do the opposite! Just shut up, listen, realize you'll screw up, and learn when you do.

If you're concerned about your future family security potential, then just get out of the way because there are a thousand guys just as qualified as you (if not more) who have the same goal. The amount the military cares about you is money-spent-on-training*applicable-experience*current-manning-needs/ incompetence-of-AFPC. So for you it's probably something close to 0*0*10^(-10)/(big number).

Also, nobody on here cares about you or your specific tailored needs. They want to provide information to the entire community, so keep your questions general as opposed to telling us about your personal nuclear family dreams and your feelings and other fuzzy stuff. There has been some good info on this thread and I think you asked a good question, but the way you dealt with it showed that you have a lot of growing to do if you're going to succeed as an officer.

Did anyone else notice the guy in the middle photo? It looks like he made a tourniquet out of his shirt. A lot of other civilians were helping as well. Once again, I'm completely baffled why anyone would arbitrarily kill people, but I take solace in the way some people responded.

  14. Actually, how can you go about getting a stupid AFI changed? I wouldn't even know where to begin.

Maybe we should make it easier for operators/Airmen to report stupid AFIs. Also, if the AFI does have a good reason it might give someone a chance to explain why it's in place, so said operator/Airman doesn't decide to just ignore it and break something.

  15. When this all kicked off several years ago that's pretty much what it was. I was at a briefing given by a cyber Lt Col talking about their CENTCOM ops, he said "we've got Mountain Dew and pop-tarts all over the place, but these kids are doing great work." They basically grabbed the nerdiest guys they could find to get this started. Built most of their own stuff, and started exploring capabilities.

Like most things, Big Blue stepped in and tried to normalize it, and now you've got PE and theater degrees leading some of these mission areas.

The problem has not gone unnoticed. Because it is under AFSPC, I have a feeling you'll be seeing a lot of changes coming. Space now requires a technical degree, the cyber A shreds will soon too IMO. Cyber WIC will be full up in the not too distant future. Undergraduate space training and IQT has been completely overhauled; it will be much more technical, in depth, and actually challenging. Cyber is changing too.

That Lt Col was a genius.

  16. FYI - there's 17D's (young&old) that still think this.

This is a very big issue among my peers, at least those of us who would kill for these opportunities. I'm a prior-E Lt and I just missed the initial 6-month school and got dumped into 17DB despite my training and prior experience. I personally know guys that did offensive stuff (comm & intel) that commissioned and didn't met the STRINGENT requirements to cross to A-shred. Initial cross flow to A-shred had very difficult to achieve requirements for schools, currency, and assignments.

Additionally in some training I'd meet grads w/ English/Earth Sciences/Other Bullsh#t degrees who got NSA assignments/A-shred who didn't care about Comm Cyber. That was rather infuriating, and still is since people are now cross-flowing into A-shred billets based on PCS requirements and not performance. I personally know a douche-non-select-Capt that's in the Net War school house now. I believe Cyber selection now has a preference for a technical degree, not a requirement.

No one fails at the school house for poor performance, at least in the classes that I've had friends through. Try again, try again, try again, pass. Can't at least conceptualize network exploitation and how to mash IP addresses? That's ok. Sounds like UPT right? Which is how it was billed to us in the community. "This is the Cyber UPT". Nerds using pilot terms, please stop.

One solution to this problem is: no Lt's through U/NWT. Capt selects and above and all do a stint in a support role as a first assignment. You can herd out the mouth breathers and send those interested/performers to the schools. It's what we're doing with the enlisted operators anyway.

Finally.. we're Ops, where's our goddamn flight suits!

Why can't we make this simple?! Civilianize cyber offensive and defensive ops with dudes fresh out of college with degrees in comp sci or computer systems engineering who pass a bunch of 'computer aptitude tests' (sorta like the TBAS for hacking) and let them go to work?

For a job like this, I want a super nerd who lives off of Code Red, Monster, and Hot Pockets, whose probably still a virgin, who wears BCGs but isn't aware of the hipster fad, and will continue to live in his mom's basement no matter how much money he makes.

I don't want some random officer with a joke degree whose constantly trying to hide what they don't know, complete PME, pass their fitness test, and play the game for OPR bullets.

The guy from Grandmas Boy would be perfect for this job:

I mean, as long as you didn't have to talk to him.
