  1. Was there a Joint Spouse or something else influencing that decision?  Obviously, CSO IPs don't have the same instructional skill set...hell, the student doesn't even get to land the plane, much less get prepped to go fly a solo.  I'd hazard a guess that the PNAS location is a placeholder for Whiting field where UPT is at.

Regardless, yes...either way a FAIP assignment to Pensacola has to be the best thing going!

Nope, it’s something they have been working to have happen for a few years.
  2. Is there any legal problem with going to airline training while on regular leave?
Got a lot to burn and want to use it up at indoc then sim training

I did all my training on terminal leave. Deltas only requirement is you are not in a PTDY status or and have days after the first day of indoc you have to return to work.

  3. Great posts, thank you.  I’ll start churning out apps this summer.
Appreciate the kind words Danger; I just tried to keep pace with the team.

Hey man. Hit me up with any questions along the way. I know we have had a few conversations throughout the years. I’m flying for DAL now if you have questions.

On the general timeline, I have a few bros that have interviews scheduled 4-5 months before their availability date. Keep that in mind, it wouldn’t be a bad feeling to already have a CJO well before you retire or separate.

  4. I think it's a train wreck.  No doubt.  Horrible.  I'm hoping Biden is a one-term president and we get much higher caliber humans to choose from.  BUT.... do I regret voting for him?  Nope.
Because at least I don't have to fumble to quickly change the radio station when my kids are in the car and they start talking about how the President of the United States casually cheats on his third wife to bang porn stars and then pays them hush money.  For all his faults, Biden doesn't recreationally rawdog porn stars.  That's nice.  That does a lot for me.
And because at least no lunatics have stormed the U.S. Capitol and called for the murder of the VP and/or speaker of the house.  That's a win.  I really like not seeing members of congress evacuated and morons with zip ties trapsing around the senate floor.
That was the last straw for me, and I don't understand how it couldn't be for other people.  I understood a lot of the mental gymnastics that people did to justify Trump's many shortcomings because, in general, they liked his policies, or more often, disliked Democrat policies.  But Jan 6th was unforgivable-- a national disgrace, and such a low moment in US history that I'm still glad I voted for the current administration, despite all it's faults.
I just wish we had better choices to start with.

So you are upset about calls to murder the VP and Speaker. How exactly did you feel when celebrities were calling for Trumps death? Or was that not a concern?

What about all the lunatics that stormed police precincts and government buildings across the US before that and the left said they were just “exercising their freedom of speech? Once again not a big deal?

The largest issue with the country is we don’t hold the same standard across the board. The “it’s ok because it supports my cause or makes someone else look bad” is tearing us apart.

  5. Having/not having 60-80 hours of T-6 time as student won’t make/break an AF helo pilot getting to the airlines as it will still be more challenging to get to a legacy compared to our fixed wing brothers and sisters.  That all being said,  Army helo pilots get there eventually if that’s what they really want, it just takes a bit longer and usually means cutting your teeth as a regional pilot.
    See the link below.

What is does do is lesson the already small chance of flying fixed wing in the AF. Every UPT base has a few helo dudes. Getting rid of that opportunity puts you in a more difficult position post military.

  6. If you choose to stay in and are the type that is going to use mloa to enhance your schedule, don't be the jackass that brags about it when you're around co-workers who can't do such things.  It happens a bit more than I'd ever have imagined and as a fellow mil dude, there nothing more cringeworthy.

Copy all, that sounds like terrible form anyway.

  7. If I understand it correctly, you'd forfeit 1/30th of your retiree pay.  As a reservist, a paycard is 1/30th of of your pay rate + flight pay, and you can log 2 of those per day.  So based on my cursory understanding of the process, you'd make more money in the long run if you're talking just military money.

Where you'd really lose out on money is missing stuff at the airline.  As an example, when I was a 330 FO, I missed out on a 3 day GS that would have paid me $13k (including 401k), because I was a at drill.  My drill check for that weekend was $1,500.  Clearly and extreme example, but even now as 717 FO, I recently missed an easy 2 day GS that cost me ~$3,200.  This is just GS opportunities, I'm not even talking dropped trips or reserve days that you'll have to do to work at the reserves.  That stuff adds up fast!

As someone who has done two jobs for the last 8 years, I can say, I've lost a ton of money for being in the Guard (cost of doing business).  But more importantly, I've lost TONS of my free time and life on the outside...that's the truly painful part.  I've talked with so many guys who've said their only regret was not getting out earlier and they can't believe how much free time they now have.  I absolutely can not wait to get out and only have one job.  If you want to teach, there are plenty of opportunities at DAL.  You can be a sim instructor (paid min of 85 hours at whatever you can hold), if you don't mind living in ATL or commuting to the sims.  If not, we have FOs who are part of the line check airmen cadre called LVPs...they do some instruction.  Or you could get your civilian instructor ratings and teach at the local FBO on the side.  I do this from time to time and find it quite enjoyable.

Best of luck in whatever you choose.  More than ever, the AF needs good IPs with lots of experience.

Completely random question…why did you move from the 330 to the 717?

  8. I retire at the end of this year and was recently hired by DAL.  I'm considering joining a reserve unit after retirement because I enjoy the flying and teaching.  I've had a few people mention its a terrible idea and I will lose money big time.  Anyone here in the program or ran the numbers?

  9. I don’t think there is any thought of retaking anything. Sad as it is, we need the Taliban to keep the airport, whether it is Kabul or Bagram, secure as the last plane leaves. So far from what I’ve read they haven’t attacked us at the airport which makes sense because they don’t want us to come back.

This may be our saving grace. They don’t want up back. If they shoot down a C17, I would imagine we would be back in there tomorrow.

  10. Dude I understand this experience makes you jaded and bitter, but I have good friends who are Afghan officers, still fighting, and they will likely be executed in the next 2-3 months. Don't generalize them. Noone went to Afghanistan for 3-4 months and suddenly understands their culture and politics.

I completely agree. I’m expecting some of those great men that I advised not making it to the end of this year. It’s sad, all they want is a safe free country for their family and now they lost (most likely)
