  1. so can you guys just pack up any kind of liquid that you want in a special container with a really long straw?

    side question...

pertaining to specialty quals, airdrop, etc:

Any weight/value added for what you guys are looking for in U-2 candidates? Or any consideration for having fewer flying hours when holding specialty quals?

  2. Nothing confirmed yet, as it still needs to be approved by the Wing CC.

In the past, we've supported California Capital Airshow (Mather) with a static, Wings Over Wine Country with a Saturday flyover, and Reno with a Thurs/Fri flyover. I'm sure there's a good chance those will get requested again this year.

no love for hawaii? saw you guys at oshkosh a few years back as well

  3. for those of you that flew the T-38C in pilot training, how do you like the T-38A? Is there anything you like better about it?

side note: shit. I will retile the floor and grow the corn for popping for a chance to fly the U-2.

  4. Thanks, I didn't know that. Is that an internal payload or with external mounts? I recall seeing a picture of one with hard points. Thought it was a joke at the time. Any idea of how much they can carry or is that privledged info?

we were finalizing the F-22 oriented testing on these at Edwards when I was there in 2009

they're stored internally just like all of the other munitions it can carry

  5. Somebody mentioned LSA (Light Sport Acft). Here's the skinny on the unintended consequences of that aircraft category. It was ADVERTISED as the solution to this very thread; hoardes of Joe working stiff finally able to afford some very restricting kind of flying, which was better than envying rich people outside the airport fence right? Well, here's the reality of that category...

LSAs can't fly at night, can carry only one passenger, can't fly IFR, yet they cost six figures!!! What part of six figure acquisition cost for a day VFR two seater than can't exceed 120KIAS sounds palatable to the young stagnant waging masses (I'm such a populist, I love class warfare) ?!?!? It was never intended for them. Frankly it offends me to have to read the garbage blurb on those online CFI renewals I gotta do every 24 months, with old 1990s archive pictures of Suzie the college student and her dream to fly on a budget. GMAFB. I digress.

The speed limit is 120kts at sea level I believe. Also, I've seen several LSAs sub-40k in decent shape that outperform Cessnas/Pipers. I don't think anyone around here would be stupid enough (or rich enough) to buy a brand new airplane of any kind. I'd also argue that for GA, I don't have a desire to fly IFR or at night 90% of the time. I think the biggest drag involved in buying an LSA is the 2 seat limitation.

  6. 4) As for the T-38s, no, they aren't available for your personal vacation trips. Not to say that they aren't occasionally used for cross-country trips (basic navigation proficency training), but they try to mesh them in with official business (airshows, "business trips" to other bases, recruiting visits to other bases, briefings to UPT bases, etc.). Sometimes if there is no official needs, an aircraft or two might go out on a weekend training trip, usually to/near T-38 capable bases so you can get fixed easily if you break, Its a nice break form the home field routine, but closely controlled by the Wing as part of the continuation training program. You're right about the program (not just Beale's, but the whole companion trainer concept) being a magnet for FWA reviews, so the Wing staff keeps a close eye on it. Like any other program, the Wing is allocated a fixed amount of flying time based on the approved training requirements and the number of authorized aircrews in the program, so you can't just fly anytime you want. You have to be careful about who should fly and how much time each pilot gets.

That's what I figured. As much as the recruiters described it as "take a 38 up as much as you want to," I figured there were some more limitations on it, just wasn't sure how strict they were. Also, what type of flights are the local proficiency flights? Is there a lot of formation involved? Acro?
