  1. Hello

I have an issue. Right now i'm processing to enlist in the Air Force, but I have braces on my teeth. I got them put on in November 2011. Now I'm preparing to go to MEPS, but apparently taking them off prematurely is DQ'ing. I obviously don't want to wait another year, and my orthodontist's won't put in writing that "the treatment will be completed" because it's not.

I was hoping someone would have a definitive answer to how I can circumvent this rule. perhaps by taking them off now, before I even go to MEPS. Any help would be appreciated, my recruiter is stuck too.

  2. I am non-prior heading to AMS in a couple weeks. Just got all my uniforms issued. The blues coat has absolutely nothing on it. I do have the 'US' insignia for the lapels and the metal name tag. Is it supposed to have anything else on it?

My coat came the same way... the official list from the AMS website says "Coat, Service, Wool/Poly w/epaulets with officer sleeve braid sewn on"... do you have the braid? I do not, after looking through everything issued to me.

I wouldn't worry about those small issues too much. On TD1 just let your FLT/CC know first thing that you had a few issues/questions regarding your service coat and they will be more than glad to help you out :airman:

  3. Wondering if anyone can answer this question. The Boldface and ops limits for the DA-20 posted on the pre-arrival guide off the dossifs.com website, are they changed every month or annualy?I plan on studying them now before I go to IFS in 3 months, but I want to make sure they wont change the information anytime soon.

I wouldn't worry about them changing in 3 months. Even if they did it wouldn't be more than 1 number or so. But in reality I wouldn't start studying 3 months out either. It took me 30 minutes one day to memorize it all then 10 minutes a couple days in a row to review what I memorized.

    Yes.

And make sure you write exactly how it is in the paper. The "I" should be a straight line not a roman numeral

I havn't been to IFS yet but after talking to some buddies who just took the test they gave me a few tips like that one:

    1) The fuel capacity is "24.0" not "24"

    2) For the BF remember to write it out in all capital letters.

    3) AIRSPEED - 60 "KIAS" not "KTS" or "KNOTS"

    4) FLAPS - "LDG" not "LANDING"

  4. I'll be bringing my wife with me to UPT and am expecting to live on base. I have a lot of furniture/stuff to move so I was hoping to move in at least a week or so before UPT starts (24 April 2012). Does anyone know if that is possible? What is the earliest we can move in to base housing before my class date? I'm a guard guy if that makes any difference.

  5. Coulda swore they told me after we commissioned.... oh well

Nope, just did mine and they definitely said we can get them after UPT.

    Funny.

OTS Select, did my FC1 at a local MTF.

Unless you mean its done during the MFS portion (the neuro-psych part)

You are correct, the IQ testing is done with the neuro-psych part of MFS at W-P.

  6. Just saw the flight doc today......DNIF 90 days and waiver req to get back on flying status......"F!!!". The doc said they've had about a 50/50 success rate ending up in flying waivers if they can get it under control. The not so lucky I guess get moved to a different career field; if this happens, anyone know if my ADSC changes? He said if they still couldn't help the migraines after moving me to another job, then theres a small chance of an MEB, just like y'all said. I've got an MRI next week, so I'll keep updating as I find out new stuff. I can already tell this process is gonna suck........

Good luck man... FWIW, I think you are doing the right thing even though it blows!

  7. 4 questions:

    1. The AMS/Maxwell website says that we will be issued a government laptop but can bring our own if we wanted. Would anyone who went through recently recommend buying a laptop or will the government issued laptop suffice?

    2. The list of uniform items to bring requires 1 "Pants, Service, Wool/Poly" then a little further down the list it requires 2 "Pants, Blue, Polyester or Wool/Poly Blend". Do I need to bring 3 pairs of blue pants or are there 2 different kind of pants that I need to bring?

    3. Do I need to bring the "US" lapel pins for my service coat or will they be issued to me. If I do need to bring them with, should I bring the ones with or without the circle around them?

    4. Since I will be attending in Nov-Dec I am required to bring a "Watch cap, no logo" and "Gloves, Cold weather". Does the watch cap have to be black or sage green. What about the gloves? Everything was issued to me except these items. If anyone knows where (online, I live nowhere near any bases) to buy the watch cap and gloves that will meet the requirements that would be great.

  8. I'll be attending IFS in February. Going over the Pre-Arrival guide I noticed I need to bring name tags for my flight suit with me. Are there any guidelines for the standard name tag I should bring or can any style/color do? My unit (Guard) issued me some wingless name tags, they are red with my name, first and last, no rank, and a symbol of the airplane they fly on it. Would these suffice or should I order some leather ones?

  9. I posted this question on another thread but no one answered it so I figured I would move it here as this seems to be the more appropriate thread for this topic anyway. I will soon be going to AMS/UPT for an ANG unit. If I own a house (my HOR) while I am at AMS/UPT I will get BAH for my zip? I will be married and am planning/hoping to live on base with my wife. I am a bit confused by some conflicting posts on this thread regarding this topic. I was under the impression that even though I own a home, during AMS/UPT I would not get BAH because I would be living on base.

  10. Congrats. Everyone leans forward in the straps once they get the call; it's a long and often boring road to get through the paperwork and get dates. It might take 2 years to get dates; be patient. It sucks to sit around at drill for 13 months and have everyone ask if you have dates yet; laugh it off.

You'll spend a day filling out paperwork for your security clearance, enlistment, etc. You'll go between recruiting, base training, finance, and probably security forces to get everything squared away. Expect multiple visits to multiple offices. At most units you should be able to take care of most of this on drill weekends. This will get you birthed into the various DoD computer systems, none of which are connected to one another.

A warning on "when will I get my dates"? Don't waste too much time war-gaming when you will get those Christmas presents (there are other threads on here discussing how long dates have taken to get). Some dudes get all their dates at once; others find out randomly, and everything in between. They all come from the NGB through your base training manager, so find out who that is if you don't know already. Some guys have been able to call the NGB and speak directly to the pipeline manager, but I'd definitely go through your unit before doing that.

Make sure you do, and make sure any waivers you need are 100% approved before going to AMS.

Thanks for the reply. I just found some of those threads discussing the process that you were referring to and I think I got the gist of it; patience is a virtue.

  11. I got picked up by a guard unit to attend UPT. I am a non-prior civilian but will be swearing-in in February. I was hoping someone could brief me on what to expect next. Where do my class dates come from? I am assuming the NGB gives me some of them. Will they give me my FCI date, AMS, IFS, UPT, land and water survival dates and will I get them all at the same time? Historically, how long does it take to get dates once paperwork has been submitted? Do I have to get my FC1 before AMS? Thanks in advance!

  12. So its official... I'm currently in the process with speaking with the medical folks at an active duty base in my state and they do FCI physicals a little differently. I go 7 days prior to taking my physical and get all bloodwork, labs and chest xrays. Then I go back and finish all the other good stuff. Best part about it is I'm in direct contact with the scheduler and flight doc and it eliminates all the middle men/women, my recruiter and everyone else.

So if your trying to meet the June AFRC board and need a flight physical I suggest you contact your recruiter and get it scheduled elsewhere. WP will be up and running 1 April.

Great news. If I have to travel to a base to get this done will I be reimbursed for the travel expenses or is it out of pocket? I will be sworn in in a few weeks, if that makes a difference.

  13. I'm also waiting for FCI dates but I'm going the Reserve route. Recruiter told me they were doing FCI physicals at the AF Academy during the interim; anyone else hear this?

I havn't heard this yet but I am going to talk to my recruiter at the end of the week. I'll be turning in all my paperwork at this time so I'll let you know what I find out about current time lines and potential alternates to Brooks/W-P in the mean time.

  14. I saw the examples from the link above. I just wasn't sure if I should use this section being that I got an ANG slot and was not applying for the AD board. However, I'm definitely gonna go with what you guys said and use the space for accomplishments, awards and whatnot. Thanks for the help!!
