So you mean the mandate to stop practice bleeding stupidity isn't being followed in some parts of the AF? I'm shocked /sarc.

Wasn't the "practice bleeding" memo specifically intended to stop IDE selects from having to complete it in correspondence before going in residence?

I think a major driver in this situation was the number of selects who punched/opted out. I was the 4/5 alternates from my wing to pick up a slot, and that was months ago. I'm sure the 5th dude also got picked up.

I haven't seen numbers but my gut tells me they were simply scrambling to fill seats.

True, lots of alternates picked up last year, but I was selected as a primary on my 2nd look without correspondence complete. I see that as evidence that the completion info was masked to the selection board. Now, how Wings were doing their rack and stacks is another story...

FWIW to whoever is considering school versus punching out,  I definitely wish I had 7 day opted rather than go to school and accept the ADSC.  If I could do it over again, I would have left.  Right now, I'm leaving the moment my new commitment is up.

What do they have you doing to "pay back" this wonderful educational experience?

Yes

If you're a select, you literally can't sign up for correspondence.  Now, if you're not a select, who knows if your leadership chain is using correspondence completion as a factor when they decide if they should push you or not?

Never seen a senior rater that doesn't.

I'm approaching the end of my PME adventure in Korea. Would anyone be interested in hearing my humble opinions?

I'm one of the lucky ones. Because of the 11F shortage, I get to skip the staff payback and return direct to the CAF. Furthermore, because of the shortage, 11Fs are ineligible for foreign IDE UFN.

However, because there might be other dudes interested in stiff-arming Maxwell like I did, hit me with questions if you have 'em.

Why? Is this due to the extra time beforehand to learn a language?

SAF/IA typically wants to bring foreign IDE grads into the RAS program and give them a 2-year "payback" RAS tour after IDE completion. Given that DLI is nominally a year (more for Asian languages like Korean, Chinese, etc), the year at IDE plus 2-year staff adds up to over 4 years out of the jet. (I didn't realize this until AFTER I was selected and had committed, so I wasn't a happy dude for a while.)

Again, better lucky than good...and I'm heading back to the CAF. My results are not typical.

  • 1 month later...

I received an interesting email today.

AF/A1 has amended the 7-day option for DE selection.  Essentially, those selected to attend DE in residence will be notified of their selection and given the option to decline without being forced to separate. 3 weeks later, the actual school locations will be released.  At that point, if selectees choose to decline school, they will be forced to separate.  This is to prevent "self before service" (people only accepting school if it's to a location they want).

The good news: those who don't want school can stay in.  The bad news, those who do want school must be all-in.

we are over obsessed with promotions and school in the air force
i've never looked up to a combat leader and thought "god damn look at that mother er right there he went to school!"
maybe i just don't get the bigger picture.

Nope, I'd say you've pretty much got it right. Big Blue has a full up viagra induced hard on for school. This is not new.

Why must you be "all-in" to accept school? Its a 3 year ADSC (usually but not always one year for school and a two year staff follow on).

A standard PCS or promotion ADSC is between 2 and 3 years. This is small potatoes, but it looks like a good thing.

Being "all-in" was merely a reference to the fact that your choice to accept or decline school can no longer be based on what school you've been assigned. You either accept any school to any location or you don't accept it at all.

As a candidate approaching my second look, I'm happy that I wont be forced to separate should I decide that school is not in mine or my families best interests.

Runr, was the source doc you saw clear that this offer was going to be offered to both Candidates and Selects?  Word we got when AFPC came to visit earlier in the year was that this offer to decline school without 7 day opting was only going to be offered to selects, not to candidates who got picked up for school and because of that be careful regarding your 3849 submissions-

This is offered for both selects and candidates who make the list. If someone makes the list and declines, they lose their select status and would have to compete as a candidate if they wanted to go in a later look.

My question is if the alternates also have to make this decision prior to the full release.

I've also never looked up to a leader (combat or otherwise) and said "damn he/she went to school!" but I have had a lot of squadron, group, and wing commanders who were credible leaders in the jet, but let the weapons officer, captains, and majors run the show.
School is not required to learn that particular skill, or how to be a good leader, but it does give people a bigger picture perspective outside of left hand, right hand, throttle, lift vector, G. I think that's really valuable. Not to an 8 year Captain IP, but certainly to a 12-14 year Major.

Ya know, you seem pretty legit for an Eaglebro.
