Only two Growler slots drop each year, and they drop from the WSO track.

That seems so wrong, but I’m prejudiced.  My EW school was almost six months long after nav school.

What good is a WSO who doesn’t know what a prf is going to be to a growler squadron?

Such a person would be almost useless in a Weasel or Raven squadron back in the day.

I am a former C-130E AWADS (Active)/ H3 (Guard) Nav for about 10 years in 90s and early 00s. It is interesting to read what folks are getting these days and the return of track based training.

In my time tanker navs were seemingly on the way out with pacer crag etc. I know some were kept for special missions. I am curious of the current status of the 707/135 types. I heard E-3G / DRAGON was doing away with the nav and I assume E-8 (either retiring or DRAGON) would do away with the spot as well.

What about the RC-135 ? Will the front end CSO go away?

Are any of you UCT studs getting any of these anymore?

I still don’t understand the Navy/Marine logic behind the C/D and E/F model Hornets. Honestly seemed like a way to keep NFOs employed following the retirement of the F-14, A-6 and S-3.

It was the only way to keep the Top Gun franchise with the single-seat-only F-35.

I just read the Guard could be adding WSO’s with the new F-15. What a world we live in.

Where'd you read that? Everything I've heard about the -EX transition is that they'll just be using them single seat. It doesn't help that they're going to single seat units who shun dropping B-words.

Let me find it. It was mentioned in the article about the delivery to Portland.

I think the Guard is mostly home land defense, and honestly a WSO isn't really needed for those missions.  Heck, f-106s could do that job.

For real world deployments in offensive operations, with unmaned aircraft to control and  against a peer adversary, then a second officer makes much more sense.

Small update in UCT info:

Track system is no more, looks like new classes can drop any airframe with no EWO/WSO/SO tracking necessary.

New ACJ FTU is being stood up so those should be dropping again in the near future.

Tons of RC-135 and C-130 drops recently, but still plenty of WSO’s.

OA-1K is alive and in the near future for CSO’s.

Thanks for the update! I'm guessing this coincides with the T-1 going away soon? Lots of stuff seems to be changing before I get class dates...
