Overheard at a Senate hearing yesterday:

"Could you say 'senator' instead of 'ma'am?' It's just a thing. I worked so hard to get that title. I'd appreciate it."

--Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) to Brigadier General Michael Walsh during Senate hearing Tuesday, when he the general repeatedly said, "Yes, ma'am," and "No, ma'am," when answering Boxer's questions at hearing she chaired on New Orleans' levee system.

Does Boxer's comment remind anyone of a movie at all........

Col. Jessep: Do you have any more questions for me, Counselor?

Judge Randolph: Lt. Kaffee?

[pause]

Judge Randolph: Lieutenant, do you have anything further for this witness?

[Jessep defiantly gets up to leave the courtroom]

Col. Jessep: Thanks, Danny. I love Washington.

Kaffee: Excuse me. I didn't dismiss you.

Col. Jessep: I beg your pardon?

Kaffee: I'm not finished with my examination. Sit down.

Col. Jessep: Colonel!

Kaffee: What's that?

Col. Jessep: I would appreciate it if he would address me as Colonel or Sir. I believe I've earned it.

Judge Randolph: Defense counsel will address the witness as Colonel or Sir.

Col. Jessep: [to Judge] I don't know what the hell kind of unit you're running here.

Judge Randolph: And the witness will address this court as Judge or Your Honor. I'm quite certain I've earned it. Take your seat, Colonel.

:thumbsup::thumbsup:

And for Miss Boxer........ :flipoff:

Being a Congressman or Senator has about as much prestige these days as the Boston Steamer I took this morning. What a stupid b!tch. We certainly have our problems in the military, but I regard our profession much higher than virtually anyone in Congress.

Wow, what a b*tch thing to say to a guy who clearly knows about respect and C&C.

On a related thought, is it a navy thing to use "sir" for female commanders? i.e. (female skipper) "Bring ye' ole' vessel hard about to portside and swab the decks and bulkheads." (lowley seamen) "Yes sir!"

Seen it on TV and it seemed odd...

Great reference. However you can argue the point that Senator Boxer didn't "earn" her title...she was elected to it. Being elected senator isn't based on merit, but more so on personal wealth...and lying enough to convince people to vote for you. Despite knowing a couple generals that were promoted to general despite their own douchebaggery, most earned the title. Elected does not equal "earning" the title.

Couldn't have said it better myself! And her stupidity is further apparant by her not realizing that General Walsh was being respectful toward her (but probably only out of an obligation to do so). Inasmuch as I hate the media (today's sensationalized story about Continental Flt 61 is a great example), I am grateful when it makes the public aware of the idiots we elect to represent us!

I would guess she is used to being called much worse things... :bohica:

Cheers! M2

Completely rude, arrogant, and unprofessional. Her panties were really in that big of a wad that she needed to cut off the General mid-sentence! YGBSM! I think it's a feminist thing. They get so damn worked up that they be treated exactly like men, that they fly off the hook if you dare use a noun/pronoun that's not gender-neutral!

Let's not even mention the fact that in other clips of that sequence, the general was addressing the male senators as "sir".

Yea, I figured not to trust TV but had to ask. I'm not gay or a SEAL (the only possibly explanations for being in the navy...) so I'm not up to speed on navy C&C. Does anyone actually know the answer?

Aboard ship, the regularly assigned commanding officer is addressed as “captain” regardless of grade.

The only proper response to an oral order is “Aye, aye, sir/ma’am.” This reply means more than yes. It indicates “I understand and will obey.” Such responses to an order as “O.K., sir” or “All right, sir” are taboo. “Very well” is proper when spoken by a senior in acknowledgment of a report made by a junior, but a junior never says “Very well” to a senior.

I can't believe morons like that get elected. We need to ouster all of these clowns.

Reminds me of an article I read recently...

545 vs 300,000,000

Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them.

Have you ever wondered, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, WHY do we have deficits?

Have you ever wondered, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, WHY do we have inflation and high taxes?

You and I don't propose a federal budget. The president does.

You and I don't have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations. The House of Representatives does.

You and I don't write the tax code, Congress does.

You and I don't set fiscal policy, Congress does.

You and I don't control monetary policy, the Federal Reserve Bank does.

One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one president, and nine Supreme Court justices 545 human beings out of the 300 million are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.

I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress. In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered, but private, central bank.

I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason. They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman, or a president to do one cotton-picking thing. I don't care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash.

The politician has the power to accept or reject it. No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislator's responsibility to determine how he votes..

Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con regardless of party.

What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall. No normal human being would have the gall of a Speaker, who stood up and criticized the President for creating deficits. The president can only propose a budget. He cannot force the Congress to accept it.

The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving appropriations and taxes. Who is the speaker of the House? Nancy Pelosi. She is also the leader of the majority party.

She and fellow House members, not the president, can approve any budget they want. If the president vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to.

It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million cannot replace 545 people who stand convicted -- by present facts -- of incompetence and irresponsibility. I can't think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people. When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist.

If the tax code is unfair, it's because they want it unfair.

If the budget is in the red, it's because they want it in the red .

If the Army & Marines are in IRAQ , it's because they want them in IRAQ

If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it's because they want it that way.

There are no insoluble government problems.

Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power. Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like "the economy," "inflation," or "politics" that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do.

Those 545 people, and they alone, are responsible.

They, and they alone, have the power.

They, and they alone, should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses.

Provided the voters have the gumption to manage their own employees.

We must vote ALL of them out of office and clean up their mess! Whatever you do,....next election,

DO NOT RE-ELECT ANY OF THESE INDIVIDUALS!!!!!

Female officers in the Navy are referred to as ma'am. At least they are called ma'am "on board" NAS Pensacola.

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA): Do you have any more responses for my questions?

Brigadier General Michael Walsh: No ma'am.

[pause]

Sen. Boxer: I'm sorry?

[sen Boxer defiantly gets up to leave the committee room]

Sen Boxer: Thanks, Mikey. I love Washington.

Another senator: Excuse me. We aren't done here.

Sen Boxer: I beg your pardon?

Gen Walsh: Ma'am, I'm believe there are still a few more senators left with questions.

Sen Boxer: Senator!

Gen Walsh: Ma'am?

Sen. Boxer: [addressing the cameras and press pool] I would appreciate it if he would address me as "Senator" and not merely "ma'am". I believe so highly of myself that merely following proper customs and courtesies is below me. I deserve extra credit. I'm pretty sure I've earned it.

Gen Walsh: Certainly, Senator.

Sen Boxer: [muttering to the General] I don't know what the hell kind of unit you run, mister...

Chuck Norris: And the Senator will address the officer before you as "Brigadier General Michael Walsh, United States Air Force", I'm quite certain he's earned it. Take your seat, Barbie! Or I'll open a can' whoop ass...
