Congrats on landing the FC1! DM me if you have any specific questions about that process. I passed mine in April so I’m sorta fresh.

2. Does anyone here know the length of time it typically takes to hear from WPAFB for FC1 Physical requests? My recruiter sent out my FC1 request forms a few weeks ago. When you received your FC1 dates, how far in advanced were you scheduled? I heard 2-3 weeks is standard.

I can say that mine took just over a month to be scheduled. Then, like you said, I got about 3 weeks notice.

3. Hi all,
I have recently found this website while researching the USAF Reserve. I’m interested in becoming a pilot, as I have already a SEL cert with instrument endorsement. I’m 30 years old (waiver?) with a bachelors in engineering degree located in Texas.

Any advice of how/where to apply? Is there a demand for pilots, or are they turning down applicants?

Welcome to the hiring process! Get ready for a lot of waiting and watching while the National Guard Bureau use your officer packet as a door mat.

First things first though, head on over to the “Upcoming Boards” thread to meet other candidates in your same position. Come back to this thread after you get a slot for questions/comments about the timeline. Also check out BogiDope.com for upcoming board dates and start applying.

If you have any more specific questions about the hiring process or the pilot pipeline feel free to DM me. I’m an off the street guard hire so I can’t provide too much info on the reserve side, however I’m sure there’s someone on this thread who can help.

Good luck bro!
4. I think my case is a little different. I did my FC1A, Not FC1. I actually did this physical at my home base so they have the paperwork. I am not 100% sure of the process but I think the physical gets sent somewhere externally and those flight docs make a final determination and send it back to my home base.

That is a bit different and I haven’t come across anyone who’s done that yet. I’m sure that it’s just taking Wright Patt a little longer since you sent it in. If it turns out it’s not in by July, I would ask your recruiter to help get in touch with WP and check on its status. Since it’s an FC1A all they have to do is essentially look it over and sign you off, shouldn’t take this long. Hopeful for a speedy turnaround for you!

5. How long does it take to get your final approval on your flight physical?
I did my FC1A back in early March and I am still waiting on approval before submitting everything to the NGB. I didn't need any waivers or anything so I figured it would be in and out pretty quickly.
is it pretty common to wait this long?

It took only 2 weeks to get back to my unit. I figured afterwards out that medical at your home unit needs to sign off on your FC1 as well (YMMV). Took my med team to sign it off after about 3 more weeks due to technical issues. All in all just over a month for mine and that seemed long compared to others.

You should ask your recruiter if your unit received your paperwork from the FC1.

Something good happened. Nearly last minute for office workers, I got orders for the flight physical and the order document addresses travel reimbursement up to a certain amount of money, what is authorized for reimbursement, and how to get reimbursed (submit two forms) along with all receipts.

That sounds like a good sign for me. Admin is currently fighting for reimbursement and I just recently got my Citi GTC Travel Card. Appears as though I should be fine.

This was definitely not my experience. Once I was gained by my unit, I got the process starting to get a CAC, get a government travel credit card (GTCC), and get DTS access. I’m Guard, btw so this may be different for you if you’re in another component. My FC1 travel was completely booked through DTS and paid through my GTCC.

Heard. I'm guard as well so this definitely applies. Just got the GTCC application done as of now. Admin is optimistic this issue will be cleared up. I'm the first off the street new hire they've had in a while so they're understandably scrambling. Bottom line though I'll go out of pocket if it means saving just a month of time by not re-scheduling the FC1.

8. Does anyone know of a reason a unit would delay sending someone to wright pat? I went to meps in june same as@ryleypav, package sent to NGB in october but still no word on going for the FC1. My DO was saying they were shooting for an end of the summer OTS date with UPT in FY22 so I would think we should be getting it knocked out.

If I was in your shoes, I would try to get that done as soon as possible. Less things you have to get done before training, the better!
9. I think you need to clarify ANYTHING. I’m all for not shooting yourself in the foot, but I had a good friend of mine who took this advice a little to literally and didn’t disclose a couple sports surgeries he probably could have simply gotten a waiver for and the docs found the scars on the body examination and he got DQ’d and barred from service.

Good point. That sucks for your friend. Scars are gonna be an obvious sign of surgery and easy for the docs to see, his recruiter failed him on that one if he told him not to disclose that.

I should clarify that you shouldn’t disclose anything that you don’t need to disclose. For example: If you had hemorrhoids years ago but they’re gone, don’t disclose. Stuff that isn’t relevant anymore but you feel the need to disclose for the sake of “honesty” is not worth your career. The docs and nurses there are not your friends, and they have control over the decision of letting you in. So don’t give them any reason not too.

10. This 100%. Waiting for the recruiter or hiring folks to be the driver and guide you will certainly mean delays in you getting started. If you can get ahead by having required paperwork done before they ask, you’ll help yourself out immensely. There’s a litany of basic paperwork you need filled out before moving forward, so just being able to hand email that to the recruiter before they ask is huge.
Metalhead731 and JabroniWizard, I don’t remember all of the forms I needed, but there’s a stack of them. I can’t remember whether I got a list and I haven’t been able to locate one through some quick email/Google-fu. What I have found is some of the number/word salad of documents requested, all of which can be Googled or pulled from the AF E-Pubs Site
My list might not be what’s currently needed or complete and my experience is only with the Reserves, not the Guard, so YMMV. Here goes: AF Reserve Application, SOU, PRC, AF 2030, and AF 883.
Before MEPS, I have an email to fill out the AF 2807-2 and hand sign/initial it (I am pretty sure I turned one in before MEPS so the recruiter could look over it) and AF 680. Anything you have on the 2807, start getting all the documentation you can from your doctors. They’re gonna ask, so you can mitigate delays if you have the info already.
If you really run into delays with recruiters, you might be able to get help from your hiring unit’s point of contact. They can call the recruiters and get some wheels moving, if you’re really hitting a wall. Just also realize the recruiter is a gatekeeper, so don’t piss them off too much; you need them to get you through a lot before starting.
Lastly, and not to put out a disheartening note, but I’d be very patient and expect for things to start slowing quite a bit more. COVID and the boomeranging retention has wreaked havoc on the pipeline. I’ve heard from more than a few folks that Reserve UPT boards are really tightening up their selection criteria, FC1s have been tough to come by, and UPT slots available are lower for FY21 than the number of bodies already hired/waiting to go.
Again, I’m not involved with any hiring, it can all change overnight, and it could all be hearsay. I’m not trying to rain on the parade; just keep expectations reasonable from what my take is on the current situation. As always, YMMV.

Received. Appreciate the assist, as always!
11. Hey, all. I’m a recent off-the-street hire. I received the call first week in November and was told to reach out to the recruiter. I contacted the recruiter and he told me that we would tell the retention manager to reach out to me with instructions, and if I didn’t hear from him to let him know. It’s been a few weeks now and I haven’t heard anything. I follow up about once a week with the recruiter to tell him I still haven’t been contacted by the retention manager and every time he says he’ll reach out again.

Is it normal to wait this long for even the first set of instructions? I don’t mind the whole “hurry up and wait” of it all, but I haven’t even started filling out any paperwork to start processing so I feel like time is being wasted. Should I keep waiting for the recruiter or try to find the contact information of the retention manager and reach out to him myself?

Kind of in the same boat. Was told to wait to here from the recruiter over 2 weeks ago. It being the holidays and covid I’m sure things are moving really slow.
12. This may seem like an odd question. But my first visit to a base for a meet and greet is next month. What should you wear and bring? I was told to reach back a week before for details but just trying to get an earlier heads up. Thanks

Business casual with some nice dress shoes is usually the go to. Don’t be the only dingus showing up in a suit lol.

As far as gifts: it’s usually an alcohol donation to the bar, but I would check with your hiring POC if it’s kosher to bring some. Also seen donuts and coffee being donated which was well received.

Good luck dude!
13. How has COVID changed the interview process? I was invited to interview and then invited back to interview on base. Not too sure what to expect as the initial interview was what I thought would determine a selection. Has anyone been through multiple rounds? Just curious as to how it went.

Multiple interview sessions are not uncommon. They’re probably just narrowing down the candidates. Take it as a win that you got the second invite!

Anyone that interviewed at Hawaii or did the 2nd round video submission for JAX hear back yet?

I'm assuming the week of Nov. 14th people will hear back from Hawaii. They said it will take 2 months to get back with acceptance and denials. Got some beta that last year it took 4 months. It's all about patience at this point.
