  1. Everyone already hit the nail on the head. Biggest thing for me, and what I usually preach to everyone, all nighters dont work, and when you're tired, stop studying. You dont retain information when you're tired, theres no point in going on. Especially the night before a test/checkride. If you dont know something by 10pm the night before, you arent going to learn it. Give your brain a rest, and you'll retain what you know that much better. I always made it a point to just relax for a few hours before bed, the night before a checkride. Theres so much information to absorb there, and you can only learn so much. Knowing where to find things is sometimes more important than the information itself.

Do what works for you. We had guys who just read stuff once and it stuck, others made thousands of quizlet cards (this dude was the real bro of the flight), others who hand wrote flash cards. Everyone is different man. We'd quiz each other on road trips to Austin or wherever we were going.

  2. Laughlin 23-07 and 23-08 when they washed the whole class back in T-1s. The 23-07 patch originally said "No time for 2.5" instead of "the old fashioned way" but that didnt make it very far.

Haha, I mean I’m sure it would have been just fine. I’ll be too busy studying and flying to really care where I’d be, just happy to be in pilot training.

But for my wife and kiddo’s sake, glad not to be there I think. I have lots of family in north Texas too so it’s actually closer being in Oklahoma

You'll have a lot more time than you think to enjoy the area you're in and explore.

Thank you, will do.  Never too early to start learning the ways of the AF.

I swore in about 8 months after I got hired. The "enlistment contract" had a line in it about being for commissioning purposes only, and supposedly didn't lock me if things went south during the process up to being commissioned. I wish I had signed it sooner, because thats 8 extra months on my pay date I missed out on.

  5. Tons of good tips, advice, and answers to all your questions on here. Just gotta start digging. I'd start applying as soon as you have all the scores and application packet materials. No need to wait. The PPL will definitely help, but you may as well start slinging applications. Why take away 3 years of getting your name out there.

Are any of the sims FAA certified at UPT? wondering if any of those hours count.

From what i found searching the google, for actual jet time you will get 96 hours in the T-6 and 42.8 hours in the T-1 with UPT 2.5

    Nope.

I'm in T-6 right now and I swear we barely talk CRM outside of the form and mission briefs before rides. This must be more of a T-1 thing because our IPs pretty much expect us to do everything in our profiles without their intervention unless we're doing something dumb or dangerous.

Yeah thats how its supposed to be. Definitley way more CRM in T-1s than T-6. But again, thats intentional. The T-6 isn't is crewed air craft technically even though its a two seater. You're supposed to fly with a single pilot mentality, more or less. However, the style and quality of CRM varies from instructor to instructor.

naw, it's just a pageant, nothing more. They have no better way of screening for aptitude at the neophyte level, for the kind of flying the aspirants are ultimately going for, but have yet to demonstrate. Certainly no more a clue than big blue regAF does with their gen pop IFS accessions. It's all a crapshoot

I've seen plenty of their hires not make it. I've been in the UPT game for 12 years so I've had first hand experience of the dynamic not only as a Guard applicant of said units, but also later on as an instructor of some said washouts both in T-6s and 38s.

My own initial caf unit had to deal with one such case during my tenure. Composite Wing sister squadron (11F) tried to push gumby hands, and the UPT squadron non-recommended her for IFF mid-phase3, so they chucked her to us (11B). Worthless, and not the greatest attitude from where I sat (scoffed at the initial offer of an 11M recat, can't believe they acquiesced, actually I can but that's not for this thread) and proof positive there was no vetting of consequence. Tons of cult of personality tbh.

In reality, and to your point, fighter units have enough applicants they can just play the straight numbers game, like the cartels smuggling by car crossing. Enough make it through to make the excess losses justified. That does not equate having a vetting process though.

    Fair, fair.

Air Force Fundamentals (AFF) is the sim-only T-1 program for high time, ATP holding students. XPW is a T-1 only program (think legacy syllabus with a couple extra blocks of training to compensate for no T-6s) intended for Commercial, Multi-Engine, Instrument types, but the only required pre-req is flight screening.

One question that stood out to me was, "What are your career goals once you return to drill status?" I was wondering why this question is so important and whether most people answer with plans to work for the airlines.

They want to know what your plans are. Looking to see if you actually have a long term plan set up on how you're going to survive when you get back to drill status. Do you have a job to go back to? Have a plan for getting a job?

How much of your training was on VR?

How many real airplane sorties did you get?

Did you have to wear the sombrero?

How do the instructors feel about the new training (from your student perspective)?

Are FAIPs tools?  *it's a yes or yes question*

    Does it suck?

    1. None of mine. I was still legacy syllabus. I think the 2.5 syllabus has like 20hrs (Not totally sure) of VR events. My class did use the VR sims though just on our own to brush up on pattern visuals and whatnot. VR pattern parties are a good time.

    2. 59 flights in the T-6 and 42 in the T-1. A few of those flights might have been incompletes for MX.

    3. No sombrero for me. Couple close calls though.

    4. I didn't have first hand knowledge, but the first 2.5 class started simultaneously with my class in the other T-6 squadron, and when we'd fly with the other squadrons IPs, they would talk about there being a lot more queep than with the legacy syllabus. I think the overall mood regarding it has improved as they've gotten used to it and as some of the kinks get ironed out.

    5. Hahaha no comment. Definitley saw both sides of the spectrum though. Those who enjoy the job and those who don't.

    6. Absolutely. But damn, its was a good time.

I know Red6 is deeply involved with augmented reality (AR) in the fighter pilot training environment but are they working with the Air Force on UPT 2.5 and/or sim only UPT?

the more realistic the simulated flight environment is, the better you’d expect outcomes to be for the student. The better AR gets i can see it being used more and more for all types of training including pilots, firefighters, surgeons, swat/police, etc. It’s not cheap, but cheaper than actual flight and if advances continue, i expect more AR type training and less actual flight time for all future pilots.

Potentially? I know I saw a video of some T-1 sims that were using some kind of AR, but nothing at Laughlin so far. The T6/T1 sims are the same they've always been aside from the new T6 VR sims. Which are lacking. Excellent for learning pattern references, and getting comfortable flying the pattern itself, but not for actual aircraft feel. They're cumbersome just because of the interface.

Is an ANG fighter selectee who doesnt track t-38's in UPT because of grades common, or a once in a millennia type of thing?

Not very common. This is why the selection process is so thorough and why fighter units usually have such a high bar set for interviews. A lot of time and money is invested in you by the time you reach track night.

Wonder how this would work for married students who are getting BAH for family back at home.  We're still trying to figure out what the move is gonna be for us as a family when I go to training.

If you're getting BAH back home, you can get a BAH waiver that will allow you to stay in the dorms while still getting BAH for back home. Idk if they can force you into housing that you'd have to pay out of pocket for.
