  1. I'm retiring. I've always been told you can't use the 20 day separation persmissive TYD if you have a job. More specifically, you can't be permissive TDY while working at a new job. When I check afi, I didn't see anything about that restriction.

Any guidance? Really not a big deal either way, I just want to know the answer.

    Thanks

PTDY can be used used for job hunting and/or house hunting. If you have a job, then you need to house hunt. I belive its rule 4 on the PTDY table ( i dont remember the reg but thats the info on my terminal PTDY pprwrk).

As its been explained to me, because this same rule only authorizes either house or job hunting, actually working the job isnt allowed. You can work on terminal leave.

  2. I was approved for VSP in this last round and during my outprocessing was required to speak to reserve recruiter on base. He told me I could still Palace Chase, but would need my entire PT history, last three OPRs, and a bio in that order for any job I put in for. Maybe I'll go ANG...

  3. I think I have a bead on the conflict. From AFPC's website

    http://www.afpc.af.mil/library/gibill/

Who is eligible for the transfer-to-dependent option?
The Post-9/11 GI Bill's transfer-to-dependent option is designed to help improve military recruiting retention and is only available to eligible active duty and Selected Reservists serving on or after Aug. 1, 2009. Eligibility requirements include service members who meet all Post-9/11 GI Bill eligibility requirements, have completed six years of service, commit to serving an additional four more years, and have registered their dependents in DEERS. Selected Reservists must meet the same requirement as regular Air Force members, but should contact their service component for exact eligibility requirements.

6 years AD + four years ADSC = 10 yrs of service

Question 8: How long can I use the Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits transferred to me?
Answer: If you are a spouse, you can begin using the transferred benefits after the transferor completes 6 years of service. If you are a child and you are at least 18 years of age (or you have completed your secondary school requirements), you can begin using the transferred benefits after the transferor completes 10 years of service. You remain eligible to use the transferred entitlement until the earliest of the following dates:

    For a spouse:
    1. The transferor's ending date of eligibility (15 years from the transferor's last discharge from service); or
    2. The ending date specified by the transferor (if one was specified); or
    3. The effective date the transferor revokes the transferred entitlement; or
    4. If the transferor dies while on active duty, 15 years after the transferor's date of death.

    For a child:
    1. Your 26th birthday; or
    2. The ending date specified by the transferor (if one was specified); or
    3. The effective date the transferor revokes the transferred entitlement.
NOTE: The transferor retains the right to revoke or modify the transfer at any time

Question 25: Will there be more guidance for the new GI Bill? What other sources are available on Post-9/11 GI Bill information?
Answer: Yes, guidance continues to be released on the Post-9/11 GI Bill from the DVA and DoD. Policy and procedures will be provided as soon as it becomes available. Source for official guidance on the GI Bill program is the DVA (www.gibill.va.gov). Source for official guidance for the Regular AF transfer-to-dependent option is AFPC/DPSIT (http://ask.afpc.randolph.af.mil/). Source for Selected Reserves is their Service component (AF Reserve Command or the National Guard Bureau).

I'd contact the AFPC/DPSIT folks and start there.

  4. Can we still transfer GI benefits while having a VSP app in? I know it's a no-go once approved for VSP but what about our current limbo status?

Posted from the NEW Baseops.net App!

I would not. Part of the point of VSP is to waive ADSCs. They are processing your app based on your current ADSCs, which determine where you are in the pecking order. If you add an ADSC at this point you run the risk of one of the following:

    1. You are already approved but you havent recieved word. Adding an ADSC effectively nullifies your package at this point.

    2. You package isnt approved, but adding more ADSC time bumps you below the cut line.

Maybe if you can talk to someone in the separations branch at AFPC you could find out the unknowns and make and informed decision, but I think based on both RIF threads here at BODN that seems unlikely.

  5. It's definitely a cultural change that won't happen overnight - certainly not when people aren't willing to change. I stopped working on my masters a year ago after finishing a few classes. I couldn't continue to waste time on something that has zero value other than filling a square for a bunch careerist on a promotion board to look at. I accepted the fact that it may hurt my "career" in terms of promotions and schools, but I also accepted the fact I'll be able to look back on my life knowing I spent that time otherwise wasted on enjoying life itself. So, I'm definitely riding this one out based on the mindset Gen. Welsh has of not wasting your time on a masters degree if it's simply to fill some ridiculous square for a promotion board. He's still encouraging folks to pursue higher education, but the results should be reflected in your job performance since ultimately that's what the masters degree should be for. I think most people in the operational community get it (well, even that is becoming questionable), but convincing the rest of the Air Force that we actually have a mission that we need to focus on is the challenge.

Perhaps a change of culture start with AFPC...go check out the Promotion and PRF thread where you can see in the O-5 promotion statistics that AFPC is still tracking AAD's. If AAD's aren't required until O-6, why track who did or didn't have one and whether or not they did or didn't make it?

  6. For the "Air Force Reserve Commission" part...does this really matter if we have completed our MOS?

I am planning to try to get a reserve gig after VSP but I don't want to select "I request that I be given an Air Force Reserve Commission" if it's gonna cause another service obligations.

    Any insights?

As far as I know, the only "commitment" is the IRR time associated with the SOU you need to sign.

you guys get caught up in the details too much. It doesn't matter what box you check, or what your sq/cc, wg/cc say. Mine both said disapprove and I got approved. Good or bad, I believe its as simple as your afsc/year group. Good luck to all who want to be paroled!

This. Get your application in ASAP for your leadership to sign off on, deadlines coming.

  7. Do any changes jump out at you? I already left the office for the day so I can't check the slides. Is there an updated RIF matrix?

    Thanks

Yes, new updated RIF matrix dated 11 Jun. Only thing that jumped out at me was on the red/blue slide, everyone in the '87 year group went blue. I don't expect many readers here will be affected by that....

  8. http://www.airforcetimes.com/article/20140609/NEWS04/306090036/Opinion-10-needs-go

Article by an Army Infantry officer, just re-enforces the fact that the Army guys view CAS as flying artillery. Also a an example of not understanding the air piece which is pretty common amongst Army Infantry from what I've experienced.

I did. The A-10 wasn't fielded just to kill some attack helicopter program as he claims. The gun was made to kill armor because in a real war dismounted troops aren't the bigger threat in CAS. And just because we haven't lost aircraft to enemy fire doesn't mean we won't given a near-peer adversary, and if that's his argument the AC-130 is hardly a better CAS choice. That guy doesn't know shit.

    What a ######ing idiot.

I'm not sure if I'm more pissed about his opinions, or the fact that AFCrimes thought this was worthy of publishing.

Come on now, this guys credentials are impressive. As an Army infantryman assigned to the Alaska ANG, he ranks right up there with my D/L instructors from ACSC. Myopic viewpoint? Check. Quasi-relavent background with no real world experience cited? Check. Condescending tone and overly emotional arguments compensating for a lack of substance and reason? Check.

Edit: Just to show how well researched this article is (he claims no FW A/C have been lost since 2001), check out this story. I'd like to see anything else land when shot up this badly. Plane landed but was a loss.

  9. Not true. All 03 Majors are eligible. The requirement is 1yr tig by Jan 15 not the board date. We all pinned on last December.

Did they update PSDM 14-38? The 02 May dated copy required 1 yr TIG as of 1 Oct of this year.

Edit: I just checked MyPers and the current FY15 PSDM is 14-38, still dated 02 May. Anyone with less than 1 yr TIG as of the board convening date (1 Oct) is ineligible for the RIF.

  10. Anyone able to confirm if 2005 11M is VSP eligible this go around? Didn't see the new PSDM by the time I left work. I know this year group got slashed, but wasn't sure if there are more cuts to be made.

Updated FY15 RIF slide posted to MyPers. I saw a lot of chatter on the FY14 thread about 11B's, they are closed across the board. 11M's closed 2001-2006.

  11. FBomb, here is a link. The matrices and other related information was posted about two weeks ago. As you will notice the 04 and 05 year groups are grayed out. Weird how looking at this site it seems like most of the people approved were in those year groups and the matrices were posted well before the VSP results.

So I have hope for the next round of cuts.

Old news. I'm looking for the PSDM that 14-38 references as the guidance for the VSP window to open tomorrow. As usual, AFPC does not fail to disappoint on the promise to meet a suspense.

Edit: Ok just checked, new FY15 VSP and TERA PSDMs are on MyPers. Only looked at the VSP program, basically a clone of the FY14 VSP with the same ADSC waivers, etc. As bjax pointed out, the documents all refer to the RIF slides, but they are still dated 02 May. Good luck all.

  12. FWIW...

    CAO: Today

    Message from AFPC regarding VSP:

"AFPC completed adjudication of all remaining Voluntary Separation Program applications, conducted one final review against AF requirements, and will start notifying approved members as early as today, Monday, 19 May. The members’ records in MilPDS are being updated and updates to the case management system will be completed no later than the end of next week.

NOTE: AFPC is working with AF/A1P and AF/SG on final AF Medical Service officer approvals which will cause notices to flow separately and a day or two later.

Approvals are based on Airmen most eligible to meet AF quotas in their respective AFSC, rank, or year group. The approvals will flow through a direct email to each member today, followed by notifications to respective commanders and a secondary confirmation to the member; occurring through the end of this week.

Airmen disapproved for VSP will be notified next Tuesday, 27 May. Disapprovals are based on the fact the Air Force ran out of quotas for a specific AFSC, grade and/or year group. The good news is that if an Airman is disapproved based on the Air Force running out of quotas, their respective AFSC, grade or year group will not meet an involuntary board in FY14.

The Air Force was committed to providing approval notifications by mid-May; we made every effort to honor that commitment with due diligence and accuracy. The final 1,000 plus applications necessitated additional review time to properly assess and account for the impact to the Air Force mission."

    Panch whats your source? Email?

  13. Congressman ### (or appointed reader),

I am currently serving in the USAF and stationed at ### AFB. The reason I am writing is to speak to Cong. Xxxx about fraud, waste, and abuse in the USAF, specifically within the major command of Air Force Personnel Command. Additionally, I would like to speak to him about the level of incompetence and mismanagement within this organization. Basically, back in Jan/Feb of this year, the USAF said it needed to cut people to meet congressionally mandated force management cuts. One avenue to make this happen was to ask for volunteers to accept early separation with pay, also known as VSP (voluntary separation with pay). It is now mid-May and I still have not been told whether or not I am approved. This is most frustrating because it directly affects my wife and kids because we cannot plan out our future past This summer. What are the chances of a congressional inquiry/investigation into this matter? I am happy to discuss this matter more over the phone.

AFPC is not a major command, its a field operating agency.

  14. I think the holdup is tied to funding issues. FY14 only has so much in funding against it for VSP, not enough to clear the entire list of VSP applicants. While AFPC had a rack and stack to determine which officers would be let go in a specific AFSC, I do not believe they had such a rack and stack ready for determining cross AFSC priorities. As such, they probably don't have a clue who to get rid of when looking against all officers who've applied.
