  1. If the new Raider squadron doesn't find a way to work "Bomby McBomerface" into a Friday patch or something they have failed from the start.

  2. Not a military pilot, so no vote that matters. Got it... However, I would not. I didn't encourage or discourage any of my three but answered questions or started the topics to see what they thought about it. Exactly none of them wanted to. Both my wife and I are second generation USAF largely influenced by our fathers' service to be the next generation. The buffoonery that we experienced was not lost upon our kids. They have made the choice not to voluntarily experience the same or worse again. The politicians outside the military don't take existential threats seriously and throw uniforms at problems expecting the hammer to be the solution while restricting how hard the hammer can strike. Not a unique trait for civilian politicians, I admit. The politicians within the military aid and abet this behavior. Some of the political-ness of senior military officials is also not a new thing. However, since the mid-1980s when I first became affiliated with Big Blue/DoD in uniform through to today in khakis and a polo shirt, the ability to say "no" and take the consequences of being fired or retired has disappeared. Look at the "Deid" and "What's wrong with the Air Force threads" for examples. Some ideas/attitudes/behavior is cyclical and just human nature. Some of it is not and is a further politicization of the military with all the political correctness and social justice charges at the expense of military efficiency and killing people and breaking their things. And get the f' off my lawn...

  4. Wouldn't get too comfortable- it's only a matter of time before the pendulum shifts the other way again (and yes, it can happen that quickly- AF knee jerk reaction)

  5. You know... I hate myself for it a little, But "Shadow Fortress" sounds pretty damn cool. If not for a bomber than for the name of some Norwegian Metal band. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  7. So, bomber dudes need to have "an aggressive T-38 attitude," the T-38 guys who go to bombers are "not the bottom of the barrel," bomber guys need to "learn to have great hands in these jets," and that T-1 guys will get "stuck in a jet they don't want" while T-38 guys are putting bombers at the top of their dream sheets?

  8. ATIS, you guys really do impress the ladies in Singapore and Thailand with those whites. And your bar act. But, I've got bad news for you... They look like hot chicks, but they are really guys. Sorry.

  9. Yes, they also have a recoil spring, built into the system and enclosed in the receiver. The AR design places that spring in the receiver extension/buffer tube. Leave the buffer tube off and the BCG is going to fly out the back. I'm guessing you know that, and we are just seeing the poor results of internet conversations.

  11. Does anyone have experience with being an alternate that was later moved up to a primary? Almost 1 year has gone by since that interview, and I just got a call saying I got the slot. I'm concerned that I have a lot less time than the usual salectee because of the circumstances.

  16. Ancient Aviator here. 20 years, FAIP, F-4s, OV-10s. Then 19 years with a major, great job, not much pressure (compared to the USAF), didn't take my work home with me, and a pretty stable life style. So what dominates my memory now? Hardly anything from the airlines. It's all about AF buddies, reunions, and BS about military flying. Wouldn't do it any other way if given the choice again.

  17. SAC tactics didn't perform well in a real war: http://www.historynet.com/the-11-day-war.htm. All platforms (especially bombers) need the aggressiveness and skilled pushing up to the limits taught in tactical aviation. Even if your airplane only pulls 2 G, fly every threat reaction to 2.0 G. 1.7 isn't conservative, it's a debrief point. Finally, ACC uses failure to improve yourself and others in the debrief. AMC and AFGSC use it to generate Q-3s and FEBs.

  18. Just using the rules as they are written for maximum benefit - basically 4 hours of duty equals one pay day so you can legally make 2 days pay for 8 hours duty. Technicians can also work a day for pay as a GS then do an IDT (Inactive Duty Training) to get one day of pay by the Military system. Hate the game not the player. Yup - the more podunk the location of the Guard / Reserve unit the harder to attract / retain TRs. If the AF was really interested in fixing this problem (RPA locations and the enterprise in general) they'd put new Active Association units or convert Reserve units in airline domiciles or in major cities distributed across the time zones to attract TRs with airline or civilian jobs based there for an easier unit to attract / retain TRs. Station AD there for the continuity with an appropriate cadre of AGRs and Techs, let the TRs come in to maintain and fly the line as desired or needed. TRs get Guard / Reserve unit located with their domicile or in an easy to commute to location via CASS privileges. Active Duty RPA get better locations that Clovistan or Creechnam and the spread across time zones improves QOL. Anderson (domicile for United), Hickam, McChord, Beale (close enough to SFO), Nellis, Peterson, Robins (close enough to ATL), Hansom - that's an easy and quick march West to East across that have AD bases. Again AF, this is not that hard to figure out. Shoe clerks. Good locations across time zones - GA companion aircraft program - Good follow on assignments for volunteers to the RPA - Commissioning opportunities for qualified applicants for a modest ADSC / RPA service AF, please see the comment above..

  19. A true warrior. Never bitched (excessively), always worked hard, and made the brotherhood and the Air Force a better place. It was my honor, and many others, to serve with him. Artisits: Amn Pucci and Amn Leonard. Nice work boys, some of the best nose art I've seen. #flynavy

  20. Singapore not so much. Thailand on the other hand...your internal "Bitchin Betty" should be on full tilt the entire time you are BOG in that AOR (drunk or sober). One of my plane captains came back post portcall with a black-ish eye/scratches on the face. I asked how he got it...he just pointed to his Adam Apple. Nuff said. Break Break To the OP: Flight Docs are truly gold in the Navy. You might want to give it a look. Besides being cool (I never met a douche flight doc)...they also bring IV bags on cross country/airshow trips so you can rehydrate under the plane after sampling the local adult malt beverage(s) the night (and into the morning) before. You never let a Doc buy his/her on drinks on the road....never. Best of luck with your decision...listen to your gut. Huggy....you nailed (STS) this O-club whites wearing Naval Aviator. You all beeeoootch about wearing your blues here on the boards...but we Navy guys couldn't wait until Friday (or Wednesday night in San Diego) to put on our whites and head to the club. (Tap your sarc meter folks if it's sticking or INOP). ATIS

  24. It's not the same but can be just as fun. Military flying is very controlled so the fun isn't whenever you want and most real good flying is prohibited by various rules. Some of the most fun I've had is in small planes. An RV-8 for example Is terrific. Military flying is not what you see in air shows. JDAM and computers have taken a lot of the fun flying out of it so it's not all BFM and dive bombing. That's not to say it can't be a blast. It's just not what you see in movies and read about in books. But other than $$, it beats what I know of being a doctor which I hear has plenty of stress and work involved.
