Utah Valley Univeristy

Recommended Posts

I'm looking at enrolling into Utah Valley University's online Professional Pilot B.S. Program this Fall semester and looking to see if anyone has heard or used the program. The program seems to be a good match for me (ground school online and fly at local FBO) with the family/work and any feed back would be greatly appreciated.

Also, where can I found out if the bachelor degree is recognized by the USAF? I have attempted to contact the local officer recruiter to verify this, but no luck in receiving a call back. Thank you.

I used UVU to complete my 4-year degree. Working full time as an airline pilot and part time in the guard and pulling a full student course load left few options for a traditional brick-and-mortar school. It is definitely recognized by the Air Force as it is a fully accredited university. It is a real school.

Some people might give you crap about attending an online school.. don't listen. For those of us who work for a living, options are limited. It doesn't matter where you get your degree as long as it is accredited, and if you are like me, having daddy pay for college isn't always an option.

That being said...If you are wanting to go down the Air Force pilot route, I would suggest enlisting in a guard unit if you haven't already. Doing so will give you access to discounted rates for in state public schools. Instead of paying for all your ratings like I did (70K at ATP flight school), just get your private and maybe instrument. Like theat6bisasham said, let the government pay for your flight training. Meanwhile, you get the benefit of earning rapport with the pilots and when you finish your degree and meet the board, you should be golden.

I attended Utah Valley University online as well and graduated last August. I earned an associated degree and pilot ratings in my home town while working and continued to work while attending this online program. I think it's a good program I learned plenty, online programs require self discipline more than a traditional setting. I've been a profession pilot since 2011 and I wouldn't have been able to complete my BS as quickly in a traditional setting plus my flying work schedule is always changing so I thought I'd never complete it.

One piece of advise if you go with this program: be very close to finishing or finished with a certificate/rating before taking the class. I saw a few people having to retake classes to finish because they didn't get their check ride done in time.

Also, yes it is a real school and is recognized by the Air Force. I went on plenty of upt guard interviews and finally am going Active Duty after being accepted as a pilot on the 15ot01 board. Off to OTS in October!

Thank you to all. I would like to go to a brick-and-mortar school, but like jetdriver said, I just don't have that option for my current situation; have to work to feed my family.

Great to hear that there are a few who have taken the program.
