DD Form 2992 / AF Form 1042

A new DD Form 2992, "Medical Recommendation for Flying or Special Duty," has been published. This form will shortly replace the AF Form 1042 (and the DA 4186 and NAVMED 6410 for the other services) which are now "obsolete" (so sayeth the form). Ideally it will allow electronic signatures so folks don't need to deal with physical routing and filing anymore. No news yet from the programmers that manage the medical system (ASIMS) on a timeline for the switch. I expect it will be fairly soon. It is available at: http://www.dtic.mil/whs/directives/forms/eforms/dd2992.pdf

Our SARM people told us this morning not to bring them 1042s anymore, make sure it's a 2992.

Tell them they are retarded. I saw an email today from the 1C0X2 CFM at HQ AF/A3 saying 1042 is still valid, and there is no mandate to use it (yet). Other than on the form, show me a reg forcing use of the 2992. Forms are not regulations--regulations are regulations. And AFI 48-123 says either form is acceptable. Edited by deaddebate

Haha, nice. I hadn't looked into it yet, but now I know where to look. Thanks.

Does anyone know if this means that someone with a DD 2992 in one branch will now be good for any other branch? I'm in the Army on my way to the Air Force. I have a current flight physical in the Army and right now they're saying I have to go through a complete one with the AF, but that was before this came out.

Clarify: to fly with another branch in a joint/exchange program, or to join that branch in an inter service transfer?

Situation #1, it should. That was the point of the form.

Situation #2, hell no. You're changing certification authorities and standards. You will need a new physical/clearance.

We are still using the AF 1042 where I work. We have been receiving some updates from above with info on the 2992 and the PDF to get feedback. I think this is a great idea as I often see flyers from other services and do not have access to their medical clearance forms. That said, I'm shocked that all 3 branches were actually able to agree on a common form though! If they can do it, maybe even the GOP and Dems can do the same!
