Bowe Bergdahl freed in Afghanistan After nearly five years in captivity, the last unaccounted for service member from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan has been freed in exchange for five Guantanamo Bay detainees who will be transferred to Qatar, which helped facilitate the deal. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, 28, is now under the care of the U.S. military after being handed over by his captors in Afghanistan, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel said in a statement. The resident of Hailey, Idaho, was serving in a parachute infantry regiment of the the Army's 25th Infantry Division, when he was captured in Afghanistan on June 30, 2009. "On behalf of the American people I was honored to call his parents to express our joy that they can expect his safe return," President Obama said in a statement distributed by the White House. Presumably we've gotten all the intel we're going to get out of the 5 we released, so getting Bergdahl back is playing our cards well. If it turns out he was a deserter or at fault, then it will be an embarrassment for the military and the administration to allow the information to come out, especially when we let 5 bad guys go to get him back. It's not a question of whether the scales balance out between the value of the 5 that were released in exchange for 1 in return... Anyway, regardless of whether it was the right or wrong decision to swap prisoners, it was a bold move on the part of the administration.
