Upcoming Boards

Looks like Stewart in NY (C17s) just pushed back the application date to June. Cancelled the FY15 in place of an early FY16

Anyone going to the interview at Savannah, Ga?

Good luck to those headed to Kansas.

If I read it correctly, someone mentioned that New Jersey is accepting applications for a UPT board (or would be soon). If that's the 177th FW, I called to verify but could not get a definitive answer. Sounds like they've hired quite a few pilots the past couple years. I didn't know if someone else had any more info though.

Just got the no go from Boise today. Ok why didn't I get the slot? No real reason but you were a strong applicant and need to keep at it. Ok..who got it and why? Can't tell you that. Sweet thanks for the insight buddy.

I think you should be careful how you phrase your questions when requesting feedback -- they have absolutely no obligation to give you any feedback at all.

All other things being equal, from the people I've talked to and the feedback I got, the most important quality is finding someone they can work with for the next 10 or 20 years. Keep improving yourself on paper (scores, community work, leadership, etc) but also think back to how your personality meshed with the other pilot's and whether that's something you need to, can, or should work on. (ie: don't be a toolbag)

That is SOLID advice. At my first interview a few weeks ago, there was a prime example of this. I got there early prior to my interview time, mingled, met some people, toured some planes, etc. After my interview, I was invited to hang around until they closed shop for the day, looked at more planes, etc. During this time, there were two other applicants that interviewed. They arrived exactly on time, went right in, then left. One of them was even asked by one of the pilots that I was hanging out with if he wanted to look at some planes on the flightline. I shit you not, this kid looks at his watch, taps it, and says "you know, I really want to see if I can make it to my last class of the day." In my head I was like "yep, no job for you." Thats just an example of what NOT to do during your interview process. I had flown half way across the country to be there and had to take a week off of school to do so. I'm sure many of you guys are in same or similar situations, but at the end of the day, how bad do you want the job? Make it show. Two days later I got the phone call that I had been selected to go to UPT for my dream job flying KC-135's. This would not have happened if I had not stuck around and got to know some of the squadron dudes who fly that airframe. One of them sat me down for a good hour or so and did his own interview on me, so I can't stress how important it was for me anyways to stick around.

AFOQT Scores: Pilot 67 Nav 41 Acad 41 Verbal 56 Quant 32

PCSM: 73

PPL

Age: 19

GPA: 3.6

ANYTHING is possible.

In the guard applicant world, you need to treat every person you interact with, from the enlisted airman who gives you directions on base, to the Wing CC you bump into, as the person who 100% decides if you get hired or not, regardless of it being another unit/base or not.

Why? Because you know how small the community is. Seriously...make a strongly negative impression on someone at one unit, and the other unit interviewing you just may hear about it.

That being said, when a unit call's and says you didn't get it, be very very careful not to sound like they owe you justification. And above all else....be careful posting anything here that remotely resembles mocking them...they check this page, and the guy calling may put 2 & 2 together. Food for thought.

Congrats A300!

Constructive criticism is almost everything when it comes to getting that call that you didn't get selected. Ask for a moment of their time to see what you can do better on and take it for what it's worth. Each interview should be better than the last. Hopefully you get selected on your first interview but it took me until my fourth and interviewing really does become an art. One of the last interviews where I got a no-go call, I spent an hour on the phone talking with the board president with how I could improve on the interview and my quals. My next interview I was hired. Milchstrasse gives excellent advice and it's with that attitude that will get you ahead of the game.

Also, concerning being professional and level headed on the forum, I know of at least three dudes that have participated as board members that lurk on this forum/thread. During one of the interviews I got the question "What's your user name on baseops? Anything on there that would put you in a bad light?". They watch this and it's not that hard to figure out who's who. I remember an old post made by a member not to long ago (from the Upcoming Board thread that got deleted) where he/she copy and pasted a no-go letter and openly mocked the LtCol that sent it. People remember that and was even mentioned in the squadron bar during one of my last interviews. A UPT slot is a golden opportunity to do something amazing with your life and it'd be pretty senseless to weed yourself out because of a post you made here.

Anywho.... Here's to you A300! Cheers!

I am currently applying to Air Force Reserve units through a recruiter and I was also planning on sending out applications to ANG units as well. My recruiter informed me that doing so would DQ me from the Reserve for 1 year since if I wasn't picked up, it would be considered being rejected for commissioning. I have heard of others doing this before. Does anyone know if you can apply to both at the same time?

That's false (and a perfect example of scumbag recruiters saying whatever they can to get their hire). I simultaneously applied/interviewed for Guard/Reserve jobs. In fact, you don't even need a Reserve recruiter (Note: Officer Accessions recruiter) until AFTER you get hired by a Reserve unit.

Bottom line, unless things have changed, treat applications/interviews between the Guard/Reserve as the same until you get picked up (work directly with the hiring units) and leave the recruiters out of it.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong and things have changed.

As far as I know that information is correct. The process of applying to Reserve jobs is very similar to Guard jobs, and neither require you to disclose, or prohibit you from applying to multiple sources of commission.

Your recruiter either doesn't know what's up, or is trying to make your life difficult. Definitely leave the recruiters out of it when going the Guard/Reserve route.

In short, my advice is to inquire about the regulation they are using and look into the regs yourself. Also ask around like you're doing now, don't be discouraged. I have also spoken with both ANG and Reserve recruiters and have so far not heard of anything like a one-year DQ. That might be some weird local SOP of the recruiting unit you spoke with, or a misinterpretation of something else. (or I hate to say it but like Saint said, also possibly totally false)

The first recruiter I spoke with told me that I had to be within one year of my ASDO (I'm currently in the Army) to even begin working with them or get a DD 368 (conditional release) signed by them. He even referenced Title 10. I emailed some of my Army personnel managers that work in separations and transfers, and I got a pretty clear email back stating a process that I could use and didn't mention anything about having to be one year out. I also checked the regs and there was nothing of the sort. When I spoke with another recruiter, they were immediately helpful and supplied me with a signed DD Form 368 which is now prepared and awaiting a good time to be submitted to the approval authority. I asked around and was told that the first recruiter was probably going by their local policy, guidance, or simply didn't know how it worked.

Is the 192nd Fighter Wing actually hiring for a UPT slot?

Edit: Saw that someone had posted something about it a few pages ago, but then it seemed to have gotten lost in the shuffle. Just trying to confirm or deny if they are having a board.

As far as I know, they are not having a board this year, but that may change.

Heard a rumor the other day that the KC-135 reserve unit at seymour johnson will be getting a few new planes and will be hiring 30 pilots within the next two years. Dont know when the official rush is suppose to begin but anyone interested should at least give them a call to say hi.

Back when I was still applying, I tried calling a bunch of times.. Then called Moody ops desk and asked for 76th ops desk. No answer no voicemail.

The email listed in vacancy bid is a hotmail. Anyone try that?

Posted from the NEW Baseops.net App!

Look on page 8. Bird321 got a response from them.

Anybody headed to Reno this weekend and want to split a room or at least grab a beer Friday night?

Just stay away from the downtown and 4th Street bars lol. If you want to get a casino feel and not have to go all the way downtown, just go to the Atlantis and check out the sushi bar in the over-street bridge section (the Sky Terrace). Hell just take the free shuttle that goes from the airport and back too, then you can just walk over to the ANG http://www.atlantiscasino.com/resort/atlantis-airport-shuttle. They might even be able to hook you up with a decent room for cheap if you ask if they have any deals at the time, try mentioning that you're applying for the ANG, who knows, the receptionist might be sympathetic. Better yet, just ask the guys in the unit if they have any ideas. Reno's relatively small.
