brewskis
Questions Abound as China UnveilsAnother Stealth Jet By David Axe Twenty-one months after China’s Chengdu aerospace firm unveiled its J-20 jet fighter prototype — Beijing’s first stealth warplane — the rival Shenyang company has revealed what appears to be a competing, radar-evading plane. Over the weekend photos of increasing resolution leaked online depicting a previously unknown, black-painted warplane with the distinctive qualities of a stealth design. Perhaps it’s only a coincidence that the stealth jet was revealed right before U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta was due to arrive in China. But the Beijing government is known to use these online leaks to show off its military advancements. So China now possesses two potentially combat-capable stealth jets. But — and we can’t emphasize this enough — it’s not at all certain that either will make it through development, testing and full-scale production and into front-line service. Just ask the U.S. Air Force, which since the 1980s has overseen creation of no fewer than four different stealth fighter prototypes, but so far has only managed to equip just six war-ready squadrons with fewer than 200 operational jets. And at an extremely high price: up to $700 million per plane, depending on how you count. http://www.wired.com...er-stealth-jet/ Thoughts? sky_king
Because their acquisition's process can't be nearly as f'ed up as ours is, it's probably as capable as the F-22, costs 1/4 as much and has the ability to take off a 2000' gravel runway. Guest
What's up with the water wings? The slot machine in the cockpit in place of a HUD is a nice touch.Because their acquisition's process can't be nearly as f'ed up as ours is, it's probably as capable as the F-22, costs 1/4 as much and has the ability to take off a 2000' gravel runway. If the OBOGS works we should buy some. They'll probably be for sale at WalMart in time for Brack Fliday.
Darth
We can only hope they will try to make STOVL and VTOL variants. That will slow 'em down.

Yeah, but you know it was probably put together by 12 year old girls in some sweat shop. Plus, that paint probably has lead in it.

RAMurai
About time they joined the club of overpaying for the capability to have carrier ops ###### up the ATO flow. Surely not related at all to this: http://www.thestandard.com.hk/breaking_news_detail.asp?id=28241&icid=4&d_str= We should have a BO.net pool for how many years it takes the Chinese to attempt annex the Philippines. There's a slanty-eyed manifest destiny thing going on in Beijing.

Guest
Wow. Maybe CH is right...maybe we should be concerned with China. Maybe Petraeus can figure out a strategy for how we can not win against China, too...since he's got some free time on his hands and whatnot. Majestik Møøse
Japan got the early 1900's, guess China gets the early 2000's. That timeline checks, they'll also have a homegrown, operational aircraft carrier about 100 years after the Japanese did.

billy pilgrim
Wow... for takeoff little wheel blocks come out of the flight deck as you spool up the motors and then you're off to hit that ramp! Interesting. If they build nine more and develop tactics for sixty years or so the Navy might have to step up their game.
