Diplomat Whose Name Is Dirty Word in Arabic Rejected as Saudi Ambassador

Thursday, February 04, 2010

A high-ranking Pakistani diplomat reportedly cannot be appointed ambassador to Saudi Arabia because in Arabic his name translates into a phrase more appropriate for a porn star, referring to the size of male genitals, Foreign Policy reported.

The Arabic transaltion of Akbar Zeb to "biggest d**k" has overwhelmed Saudi officials who have refused to allow his post there.

Zeb has run into this problem before when Pakistan tried to appoint him as ambassador to the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, where he was rejected for the same reason, according to Foreign Policy.

Somehow I can see new bag nametags for use downrange coming from this...

WTF? Men at Work ripped off Kookaburra?

This week Australian Federal Court judge Peter Jacobson ruled that the flute passage in Men At Work's popular new wave ode to life in the lower hemisphere bears a distinctive resemblance to "Kookaburra Sits In The Old Gum Tree," an Aussie children's folk tune written 75 years ago by schoolteacher teacher Marion Sinclair. "I have come to the view that the flute riff in 'Down Under' in the 1979 recording and 1981 recording infringes on the copyright of 'Kookaburra,' because it replicates in material form a substantial part of Ms. Sinclair's 1935 work," stated the judge. (full story)

And here is Men at Work's Colin Hay's statement on court battle over Down Under and Kookaburra in full.

'Monopoly' Gets a Makeover

05.jpg

Hasbro has unveiled the design of the new 75th anniversary edition of their classic board game, Monopoly, set to hit stores in fall of 2010. "Monopoly: Revolution Edition" is slick and round instead of dull and square, with debit cards and an ATM instead of paper money and a banker, clear plastic representations of the classic tokens (bye-bye, little boot!), and clips of popular songs (like Rihanna’s "Umbrella," Daniel Powter’s "Bad Day," and Beyonce's "Crazy in Love") that play after certain actions.

What a load of wank.

ith debit cards and an ATM instead of paper money and a banker

So, they are killing off one of the best parts of Monopoly: lauding all your cash in front of the other players, and doing under-the-table cash loans to allies so that you can put competitors out of business.

What kind of idiot is running that company?

Agreed, if there is any music to be added to this game, it should be the O'Jay's For the Love of Money, Pink Floyd's Money or even Abba's Money, Money, Money (although I think Madness' version was better); not this shit!

All of that security and someone can just climb into the gear compartment?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/8504667.stm

Japanese officials are trying to identify a body found on a Delta Airlines flight which arrived in Tokyo from New York on Sunday night. A mechanic found the body inside one of the landing gear compartments of the Boeing aircraft during maintenance. The man, who was of dark complexion and dressed only in blue jeans and a long-sleeved shirt, was carrying no passport or personal belongings, police say.He was possibly a stowaway and probably froze to death, they added. The temperature in that part of the plane falls to about -50C during flight. Police official Zenjiro Watanabe told the Associated Press that the man must have sneaked in just before departure. He said that the man's body had no visible injuries except for signs of frostbite. Mr Watanabe said police were investigating the incident both as an accident and a possible crime. There has been no official comment so far from Delta officials.

Mystery of 75 starlings falling from the sky

_47449047_imgp0048.jpg The deaths of 75 starlings which appeared to fall from the sky and crash land on to a driveway in Somerset has mystified the RSPCA animal charity.

The birds were spotted falling onto the entrance of a house in Coxley in Somerset on Sunday 7 March.

Animal welfare officer Alison Sparkes, who was called by police, said: "It was a remarkable sight, I've never seen anything like it."

There is no evidence the birds were ill or poisoned before they hit the ground.

Predator theory

Ms Sparkes said: "Onlookers said they heard a whooshing sound and then the birds just hit the ground.

"They had fallen on to the ground in quite a small area, about 12ft (3.6m) in diameter.

"They appeared to be in good condition other than injuries that they appear to have suffered when they hit they ground.

"Our best guess is that this happened because the starlings were trying to escape a predator such as a sparrow hawk and ended up crash landing."

She said that the birds had suffered broken beaks, broken legs and wings and abdominal injuries.

Five of the birds survived the fall but had to be put down because of their severe injuries.

Not a rare phenomenon...it's been known to happen around low-budget Tex-Mex joints near Lackland AFB when FRED crews partake in those "All You Can Eat Burrito Wednesdays!"... :moon:
