Deid Accomodations

Recommended Posts

Found out recently that I'm CAOC bound, just wanted to see if I could get the latest on accomodations (or what to expect by Late Summer early Fall), and any other points of interest. If the answers don't belong on here, PM me and we can discuss via .mil if need be. I'm mainly interested in what's happening with the WiFi situation, any suggestions on what to bring with me that's Deid specific, if I can expect to be in the dorms or not etc...

I'm at the CAOC. There will be huge changes by the time you get here. I can't elaborate on here.

It depends on how long you'll be here as to where you will live. If it's shorter than six months, O5 and below, you will be in CC (trailers). If it's six months or longer, you will be at the BPC, assuming you are SSgt or above. I can only tell you about the CC as far as what I hear from the three people in my office that live there. The rest of us are damned and live in BPC.

I've never used WiFi in CC, but if it didn't work, I doubt so many people would be there with their laptops. The signal is okay at the BPC BX, but most of the time you will not find an unused power outlet to plug your computer in. It works okay at the BPC dorms, but the bandwidth has gone down in the last couple of weeks. It could be widespread booster use, but I can't confirm it. Early in the morning or prime time, you will barely get a signal. It might get much, much worse in the next six months or so, but again, I can't elaborate on here.

See if you can get a number for your section. They will be able to get you all the information you will need. If you can't, PM me and I will try to track them down.

the dedicated forward presence of a senior Airman

Really, an E-4? That's reassuring. That's why the "we're all airmen" concept is retarded... Anyway, thanks for the info, sounds like the retardedness will only increase as the General's lackeys run amok and use up all the better real estate/resources. Fvck my life...

WiFi in CC is now fully installed. It registers a 25-30% signal (Fair) from my room using this thing---> http://www.cantenna.com/ . I'm surfing Base Ops w/ it right now.

I have it inside my room next to the window pointing towards the BRA. Its good enough for email and web surfing during non-peak hours. During peak hours its hit and miss. Outdoors aswell. Other than it looks like a bozoka or spy camera, it was well worth the money.

I've seen more expensive/higher speed setups for the WoW clowns along with A/C unit and roof mounts. Take a walk down to the Navy trailers and you'll know what I'm talking about.

Where are Tranisents staying these days? Tents still?

As of last week, yes. Transient aircrews get the tents that are as far from everything as possible.

Here is an update for anyone interested, if you have any questions feel free to PM me, I’ll be here until Feb 2010. Wi-Fi is hit and miss in CC, right when I think I figured out the best time to use it I go back the next day at the exact same time to find out its barely usable and I see the kids tying it up with WoW. At times I can’t even get on the WIFI yet I see some of these people on it for hours and hours. They installed repeaters but all that accomplished was making the already $itty internet go out further from the Bra. You can get a Wi-Fi booster antenna but again all you are doing is getting crappy internet inside instead of outside your room. All I want to do is Skype the wife and kids once a day. I can do this on most days but it’s like watching someone do the Robot. I’d say that on average two out of seven nights I’ll get lucky and get a really good connection and the Skype works like a champ, that's usually around 4am local. I deployed with a major computer geek who checked all my settings and made sure I was running the computer correctly and so I’m fairly sure it’s not my computer but maybe others have a different experience.

As for other things, if you are coming soon I would consider buying a de-humidifier soon from someone leaving unless you like sleeping in wet sheets and putting on wet clothes in the morning. The BX charges $190 for a pathetic little one so order one online once you get here if you can’t find one. I think someone asked about computers in rooms. I know the Herk guys have them but a lot of other rooms do not.

I've been here for 4 mos and am heading out this week. Regardless of the rule that "you shouldn't use the internet in the BPC building unless you live there", I've found that the internet works pretty damn well over there (I live in CC). Just don't make a lot of noise and mind your own business and nobody will say anything to you. I've rarely gotten the internet to work anywhere in CC.

As for dehumidifiers, save the money and go downtown to the carrefour store. In the air freshener section, you can buy disposable dehumidifiers for about a dollar each. They last 30 days and pull a lot of moisture out of the room. I spent 4 bucks throughout the deployment and have been content w/ that.

Good luck to those at the Deid...Peace out

Guest Bad Intel

When I stopped at the Deid on my way to Iraq 4-5 months ago the net at the Bra was useless. A friend pointed me to the big BX, not the one by the Bra, and I setup my laptop in the common area there. The connection was excellent in the BX area, was able to do the webcam thing with very little problem and voice chat was good. Even if the BX is closed, the common area and a little MWR area is still open. Only problem is it is a fair walk from the Bra, but worth it if you want to talk and see the family. Also there is a food court there, so you wont have to make a trek back to the chow hall/DFAC/whatever the hell it is called now.

I have my iPhone unlocked...wondering if I can get a Qtel or vodaphone sim card with a data plan while I'm over there. Anyone messed around with an iPhone at the Died?

I have some cousins in Qatar and every time I visit from the US, they ask me to bring the latest unlocked US iPhone for them so that they can use it with QTel.

From what I remember, QTel doesn't really sell a "data plan" as we know it in the US. Everyone pays individually for incoming/outgoing texts. Maybe things have changed since QTel doesn't have a monopoly anymore-- I'll dig around some more and find out the details from them

Here's what I got from someone who lives there. Hope it helps...

I think Qtel has launched a plan that works with the iPhone, but I know for sure that Vodaphone has released the iPhone over here and I think he can get a legit plan with them. If I were your friend, I would look at what Qtel has to offer first because they are better, but if they don't have anything then I know that Vodaphone will be there.

So here I am, sitting in the BPC and looking for a few laughs so I try to go to South Park's official web site where you can watch any episode of the show for free, only to discover that the site is now blocked because it is "pornography". Nice. :M16:[morale]

Which is doubly ironic, since there are about 8 seasons of it on the government computers that make up the Mediaweb.

Try www.allsp.com

Should be every season/episode, ever. Streaming.

Lots of annoying pop-ups but worth it I think.

Anybody have any current gouge on living situation at the deid? I've been to Manas but will be going to Al Udeid in late spring. Can wireless internet be accessed from the rooms in the trailers? Still don't have to share rooms right? Anything else would be appreciated. Thanks.

There have been a few changes at the Deid over the last couple years. There's a new chow hall in the CC that's a lot nicer than the old one (it's an actual building as opposed to a large trailer situated over an open sewer pit). The Wi fi has been expanded, you can even pick it up in the transient tents now, but the quality of the connection varies. Don't know about picking it up in the trailers, it seems like you might need to string an external USB antenna outside your window for that to happen. Then, of course there's the lack of beer, but how long that will last is really anyone's guess.

I'm in a "wet-billet" about as far as you can be from the BRA. I was given an antenna from someone in the outgoing unit. Works great from my room. During peak interent usage times (shift change and early evenings) it's slow going. Other than that, its a good signal. Skyping and streaming works well.

Any specific questions, feel free to PM me.

Believe the wireless is about to get a lot better. Briefs I sent in, I am hearing that there will be almost a doubling of the access points in the CC area over the next month or so.

With the fast wireless though they are installing a new proxy server to start blocking websites. As of right now it's wide open, but when they put in the proxy next week it's anyone's guess how restrictive they are going to make it.

True. If they block Skype it will defeat half the purpose. I'd be fine if they at least throttled the WOW servers a bit though.

hopefully they block the damn world of warcraft servers. that would double the available bandwidth instantly
