are you just padding your resume a little?

That one. If I'm ever have free time, I might do some instrument/multi instruction at the local FBO. I don't have any interest in doing zero hour instruction - got enough of that in white jets.

I know some of you are doing staff work or otherwise not flying...but for those that are and if you are an AF IP you can renew based on your Form 8.

14 CFR 61.97 (2) (iv). A record (AF Form 8) showing that, within the preceding 12 months from the month of application, the flight instructor passed an official U.S. Armed Forces military instructor pilot proficiency check.

So how do you actually renew it with your IP form 8? Take it to the FSDO? Online?

JS,

You ultimately have to take it to a FSDO. First you will have to fill out online using IACRA https://iacra.faa.gov/iacra/. Once thats done, call your local FSDO and make an appointment. During that same call, ask what all documents to bring.

If you renew within 3 months of your CFI expiration, you keep that same expiration date. If you wish to renew earlier than the 3 months prior, you will receive a new expiration date.

I just did the FSDO thing and it worked like a charm. They put me in touch with the "military" FSDO, who just got out of the Guard a year ago, and it was about as easy as filling out a job application for MacDonalds - name, address, and two questions about drugs and crimes. He took a copy of my Form 8, looked at my Mil ID and FAA licenses, and gave me the temporary.

Oh, by the way, he said if you let it expire, you have to get the CFI the old-fashioned way. in other words, if you used the Mil-comp to get it the first time, you can't do that again if your instructor tickets expire.

Nuggets up Y'all,

I just completed my FIRC CFI refresher course using American Flyers online. It seems that they have revamped their courseware as there were no time requirements like before. Very CBTesque, just click through as fast as you can, then take the 5 question test at the end of each section. 16 sections total, took me an easy peasy afternoon to complete. I recommend having two screens open, one to the test, the other to the lesson.

BL, good value for your money, paid $75, good for as long as you live, and it didn't steal away a weekend of my life.

Cheers!

So flash forward 9 months, I finally have my single engine ATP knocked out. Now I need my SE CFI Add On.

I can't find any clear guidance on whether a spin endorsement is required for a CFI add on (I have my MEI CFI). Some people

have said that it is only required for the initial CFI. Obvisouly I spun in UPT but that isn't documented in my

logbook. The local FSDO didn't know.

I have no desire to spin with a 22 year old CFI in a 30 year old Cessna.

Has anybody come across this problem?

I used milcomp for my MEI/CFII then took a checkride for my CFI add on. The examiner didn't ask me to do any spins.Page 21 of the Flight instructor PTS has a table with the required items for the check ride.

To be clear, the PTS is a list of tasks to be accomplished during the practical vice the eligibility requirements for the rating. FAR 61.183(i) is straight up that you need either 1) a spin sign off or 2) have to demonstrate it. Go find a Decathlon somewhere and have fun for an hour, as I think showing up to the practical without a spin endorsement is unwise. Some of the civil aviation community is really supportive of military dudes, and some feel military guys are silver-spoons who never had to hump it out in the regionals or night cargo... make sure you get the right DPE.

just signed up for the MCI at the local testing location, and am using Sheppard Air for test prep. Will I need to scrounge up a flight computer/calculator/E-6B/etc for the actual test or will the sheppard air test prep cover that, too?

^^^Butters- you just need to have a form 8 showing that you were a military instructor pilot. Multi type will buy you the MEI, Single will get you the CFI, and either should get you the CFII (instrument). Many folks won't get the CFI due to most mil aircraft being ME. I also had the FSDO ask for paperwork from my ground school IPUG course (which I didn't have and was able to talk my way out of).

Thanks! I shut down an engine once in the tweet but did not get a form 8 for it. So, it looks like I have to take the CFI check.

Thanks for the info on the ground school portion. I actually have mine, it is just burried in the vault behind my stockpiles of Ammo and Porn.

What exactly are they looking for? I can't imagine the FSDO gives a shit about the academics that go along with IPUG considering they have almost zero to do with the type of flying a CFI is related to. What'd you tell them to get around this?
