Flammable, where did you PCS to? It all depends on location. If you PCS'd to Travis, then you should absolutely buy. If you PCS'd to Columbus, then probably not.

A base similar to Beale. Kind of an hour or two away from a larger city and surrounding town has no real industry. Appreciation from 2008 - 2018 was maybe 2-4% a year and the last two have been 14/15% consecutively.

  2. What are my fellow PCS'ers doing in this market? I recently PCSed and home prices like much of the nation are wild around here. I keep trying to wrap my head around buying a house that appreciated 80k in 2 years and its tough. A house that sold in 2019 on zillow for 270 is now 350!

On one hand, if I stay renting I am paying ~17-20K to someone else. On the other, if I buy even at these prices and stay for 2-3 years, that's equity I could be pocketing (even assuming a 10% market drop).

And she was on the back half of this command tour already.  I know there were a lot of MX folks who weren't thrilled with her leadership...but then, few in the maintenance field are happy with their jobs, their leadership, or their quality of life...so I'm not sure what she did that was so far outside the norms.

Do you have any more info about the IG?  I was there for the last three years of my tour at Dyess, but left last summer.  The new IG who came in last summer was a good dude that I've known for a long time, and the director of complaints has been there for something like 18 years.

    For reference/anecdote

Not sure the exact name of the document, but it was sent to guys that were joining a Reserve unit that wasn’t being offered a Palace Front/location bonus. It did list Patrick though.

I can also confirm a $20K ascension bonus is valid

Sorry to bump a really old comment, but I came upon this while reading through various posts. Does this mean that for some reason it's easier to go fighters if you go ANG vs AFR? I thought Guard still fell under AFRC but wasn't sure after reading your comment. Thanks for the clarification.

The guard is similar to the reserve in the sense that they are both 'part time' for most members. Where the guard differs is they also have an attachment to their respective state.

To answer your question, yes it is easier to go fighters for the guard when looking at it numbers wise. There are more ANG Fighter units than there are AFRC fighter units. In addition, if you go the unsponsored route, you track T-1s which automatically excludes you from going fighters.

You aren’t the only one. My best friend in my unit somehow left UPT without ever signing his 10 year service commitment. He brought it up to our Personnel people here on base but they told him that he was under a 10 year commitment to the ANG. Hopefully someone on here can point you to the right place on where to find it.

His initial enlistment paperwork in the guard before going to OTS should've had the form. That's where mine was.

  7. Slots are based off projected openings in the Squadron. (Ex. if someone is retiring or leaving, then their line is open to fill) for the most part. Units dont necessarily reserve a spot in OTS/UPT/FTU. The Guard Bureau has an allotment and they will assign as necessary depending on multiple factors including unit manning.

Long story short, luck of the draw with you and your unit and getting your paperwork pushed quickly. All depends on who you get and who you or your people know.

For a initial VA loan how do they determine your status, as in if you’re a reservist but on active duty orders, what funding fee rate will be charged? My broker has no clue so he just went with the 2.4% because I’m in the reserves.

You have an eligibility letter. If its your first time its 2.15, and then subsequently they start charging. The VA puts out a chart.

Doing some research. Has any of the F22 Guard squadrons (Virginia, Florida, Hawaii-those are all I can think of) or the B2 Guard squadron (Missouri) hired off the street in recent years?

Yes, I know of at least 1 hawaii hire couple years ago. HI does a joint board with C-17/F22/KC-135 every year or other year.

  10. Thanks everyone, in particular @SocialD. Easier said than done about changing units as it’s only temporary (~ 1 yr) but I’ll be sure to talk to JAG as well if need be.

Ive got a good leadership and will probably drill some months at the local unit here too through back channels

  11. Question for you airliner guys. I will be starting work at an airline(big 3) as a ground guy and will need to start commuting to the east coast from the Midwest and was wondering how travel time is looked at? Based off schedules for a regular weekend drill, I would have to leave Friday afternoon and won’t be able to fly back until Monday morning non reving. Would both fri and mon count as mil leave days or do I need to take vacation? In addition, I would assume non reving would be kosher even though I’m not technically working for the military those two days? I would ask my new boss but he has already been a douche and I would like to know some background if he tries to push back.

    Thanks

Since your unit is 16's and you're transferring to 35s I'd guess you're VTANG. Since they have a board coming up in June, I'd apply for that one(again?). Your scores are very good and it's your home unit so you've got that going for you. The 16 board you didn't get selected for, did you ask for feedback on why not? As far as debating over fighters and heavies with airlines in sight, I've seen just as many fighter guys go to major airlines as I've seen heavy guys. In the end, apply to wherever you want and see what presents itself.

Na, VT's last board was for 35. If I had to guess maybe WI

  13. Had my FC1 done in the past month. I'd be very surprised if there's anything about your eyes they DON'T find out. It was essentially 3 days of eye testing with machines, doctors shining bright lights, and more doctors looking at your eyes. Had people dq for unnoticeable eye diseases and others told that waivers were possible for xyz issue. All depends on your severity which I don't think anyone here can answer unless you know 100% the background of your eyes.

    Thread revival here!

I have a similar question, but I think it is different enough to warrant me asking.  I was recently called by a heavy unit to be one of their UPT candidates.  I was very excited and said that I would love to go to UPT.  I haven’t received an official letter, started my official paperwork, or gone to MEPS  yet.  I’ve only received the phone call.

Anyway, it’s always been my dream to fly fighters, but I haven’t had a chance to interview with any fighter units yet.   I don’t want to say no to this offer, and throw away a chance to go to UPT on just the hope that I might be picked up by a fighter unit in the future. “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.”  I’d rather fly something than nothing, since eventually I plan on flying for the airlines as well, and I don’t want to waste time not flying!   But, I still want to know if I can land a fighter gig.

I was wondering if I accept the offer, can I still try for other Guard/Reserve fighter units in the meantime?  Can I switch over to another unit that flys fighters before I go to UPT? If so, when is it too late for me to switch to fighters? I’ve heard that once I start flying T-1s the deed is done.

I was thinking of accepting the offer as a safety net to ensure I go to UPT this year, but still interviewing with fighter units up until it is too late for me to switch (whenever that is).  The heavy unit that called me was the first I interviewed with, so I didn’t expect to have an offer so soon.  I thought I would at least have tried a few fighter units before I got an offer. My main fear is that I accept the offer and start flying heavies and then later in my career I start to have this burning “what if” feeling.   I feel if I do fly heavies without at least trying for fighters I will constantly wonder “what if I could have been a fighter pilot.”

Any advice? Slash back to the original question - can I switch to another unit even after I accept?

I've stated this before but assuming you're already enlisted/sworn in with your current unit, at the end of the day if you're accepted into another squadron/wing, you will need to fill out a transfer sheet which needs to be signed by your leadership and wing. If I were you, I would be 100% transparent while doing this.

    Thread revival...

Civilian living the cubicle life. Recently picked up by KC-135 ANG unit for UPT. Swore in and now waiting to get sent to FC1 in a couple months. Hypothetically, if I get picked up by a fighter squadron before or after my FC1, would I be able to drop the 135 unit even though I’ve sworn in already?

Well you would at a minimum need a DD368 since you are already a member of another unit. You would be at the mercy of your wing leadership and if you blindside them with something like this that isn't going to help your situation at all especially before you have left...
