Can someone tell me what happens to a guard pilot who fails or drops out of UPT? I've been hired to fly KC-135's and won't start UPT until late next year. I currently fly for United. I love the idea of flying heavys part time in the Guard and am glad I got selected. My only concern is if something happens in UPT and I can't fly anymore. Will I have to do some random job for the remaining 10 year commitment? Or would I just go back to my job at United. My only fear is somehow I'm going to have to be forced to do a job and not go back to United. Thanks. And as for the timeline

    Hired June 2020

    UPT: July 2022

Your 10 year commitment doesn’t start until the day you put wings on your chest.

Hey everyone, quick question that I couldn't find answered elsewhere: is IFF typically treated as a TDY after receiving PCS orders to the FTU location?  I'm just wondering how it works with family who will be living with me during training -- is it typical to get some time to move to the FTU location and then start IFF, which would give my wife and kid the opportunity to settle into the new place and start school up while I'm away for 6 - 8 weeks?

For context: I'm a Guard guy about to start UPT in a little over a month, just trying to think ahead a bit. Thanks in advance!

I’m a reservist that went through this in the past year. My family stayed behind at my UPT base while I was TDY at IFF. I went back to my UPT base, packed up the family and then PCSed to the FTU.

Depends on which bonus you are talking about.  Technically (Reserve side, can't speak for Guard) we have two bonuses going on right now.

    1.  We have a 14% salary bump that gets paid out on each LES.  That's bonus #1

    2.  AFRC a few years ago signed off on an annual pilot retention bonus as well.  It comes out as an announcement on MyPers each year.  This year its $18k per year and you can sign up for it for 1-4 years.  Kicker is AFRC got lazy and copy/pasted the AD bonus verbiage so even though its an "ART" bonus, you have to be past your initial UPT commitment date to get it.....

Thanks. I’m switching to an ART position in about 2 months and and Civilian Personnel appears to be useless on the topics; no surprise there.

SBR Form 1 took about 3 weeks from submission to approval through eForms. I’m shocked the gov could do anything that quick. All that to say the paperwork was a bit of a PITA to get together, but overall not too bad and totally worth it! Now to shoot this thing and hope it doesn’t blow up in my face (first AR I’ve completely built myself).

Update on it blowing up and pics?

No one is being skipped here but on vaccine days you can show up at the end and if they have leftover shots they’ll give it to you instead of throwing them away. They tend to run out of extras pretty quick.

That’s how I got mine yesterday

In my experience, the docs there all seem really salty... I imagine them wake up in the morning and be like "f I gotta deal with these mfers today f f f". Don't let that scare or intimidate you per se...

100% agree on this. This will sound stupid, but take a moment and ask the person your interacting with “how are you doing?” That simple question made things night and day for me. You would hear them be an asshole to the person ahead of you and then their attitude would change when I dealt with them.

Not sure I understand the question?  Rates aren’t locked in until you go under contract to buy a house.

It was a poor question. If I apply for a loan today, how long do I have to use the loan and would I receive an interest rate when I apply or only once I place a house under contract?

  9. A digital watch with the ability to set multiple alarms and vibrates when the alarm goes off like this one:Timex Men's T49851 Expedition Vibrating Alarm Black Resin Strap Watch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004GHLEMQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabc_sHCSFbKDKZ7QS . It was great while at OTS as I could set it for a minute or two before they started banging on the doors at 0430 and I could be some what coherent while scrambling. I’ve had it for about 2 years now and still use it.

Wait...like #2 didn't work and he tried again for #3, or did ya boy just like sharp objects and needles near his nuts?

    Hopeful -

I had 1.  Tricare did not cover, cost about $8K in 2013, was not successful.  Just talk to your PCM so they can put it in the record, and find an off-base urology clinic that you trust and tell them you're a cash patient.  It's almost never covered by insurance.  I don't know if you got clipped in the USAF, but I had to sign...3 waivers?...and my wife (at the time) had to approve as well.

We then spent another $30K+ trying in-vitro, also not successful.  I feel like fertility issues need to get brought up more, and it was the reason I was so fucking pissed off at the DoD authorizing hormones for mentally ill people to "switch genders" but not for normal people trying to have kids.

Thanks for the Info. I did it before joining the military and read the same issues of Tricare not covering it.
The cost is the same these days and we’ve been looking more into the IVF, but the cost is frightening to read. You remember how long it took you to recover and get back to work from the reversal?

I completely understand how you feel about the “switching genders” BS. In my opinion, not being able to start a family is more mentally taxing on a person(s) then someone whose trying to figure if “he” looks better with it tucked in or out... I digress.

  11. Soloing at 30 is crap and 65 is a rip off! This of course is all based on how well you’re doing. Go to a local airport and start networking. The GA community is very welcoming and there’s always a person(s) who are willing to trade labor for flight hours. I.e. clean the plane, hangar, etc

The best way of doing this in the cheapest manner is to get into the FAR/AIM Part 61 and see what you can combine into training to help eliminate unnecessary hours. An example would be doing your night flights as XC rides, so you can accomplish 2 things at once. A lot of instructors are good at doing this, but there are some out there that are more interested in building hours then your training.
