  1. And that's exactly what you are not supposed to do with USERRA. Not only is it not there for you to make a profit, you probably should use judgement posting that you are overtly using it to make a profit. If there's a big legal push someday for companies to reduce USERRA rights, one of the first things they're going to do is search the net for quotes just like this and probably try to figure out who you are. If that's what you do with your USERRA right, none of us can change your mind probably, but at the very least try not to be public about exploiting it. When you drop trips like that, you are screwing over your fellow pilots, which include a lot of military guys that choose not to make money off of USERRA and just take the bad trips. It seems similar to the guy bragging that he got out of a deployment for some BS reason, while watching his squad mate pack up last minute, and then adding that "Oh great! now I also get to take my buddy's upgrade slot that he'll be deployed for."
  2. I hate this too. It’s always fun when you get a Captain that can’t go 30 seconds without talking about the SOP reach up and touch your panel. Roughly every 2 months I get an unexpected heading at cruise. I somehow survive with my super advanced skills of being able to turn the bug to the assigned heading.
  3. On the plus side. It seems like PIT is a great place to network and get the apps perfected. Every PIT guy I knew seemed plugged in to the hiring process more than the average AF pilot. Great at place too to work on/practice the technical stuff and GK for the Delta and Fedex tests.
  4. Ha. Looked at the Bio. Ironic that a previous duty title was Chief, Detainee Affairs and Personnel Recovery Division... So this "crisis" has been going on for some time. We passed the "predict the problem and solve it before it happens" phase. Then we got to the "let's just react to the problem" without seeing really anything as far as new effort or incentive for people to stay/return. Now it's more like "The school bus is hanging over the cliff, let's assemble a tiger team with our top people to generate a bullet background paper detailing effective lines of effort to solve this. Then we can have a follow-up meeting in 6 months with edits and comments to staff it to all agencies involved."
  5. Here are my (very quick) numbers that I did for my cost analysis on going back. I assumed 80 credit hours, a profit sharing check might be $10k if I get one, normal progression at the airline, and estimated taxes ( I live in a very high tax state). I looked at different situations for if they offered the bonus or not, and whether I'd get an assignment that got partial tax free (Didn't think too much into it since it's hypothetical... think TDY to the Phillipines CZTE zone every now and then if you need to. I absolutely would not volunteer to deploy). Going back to the AF for 3 years would cost me $177k. I usually do way better than 80 credit hours a month, and didn't bother to run it for any premium pay trips since the difference was already huge. Interestingly, if they offered the bonus and I got some tax free, it looks like the money might favor going back. However, it's still comparing apples to crabapples. I think the A1 would be smart to sit and try to think the way we are (including those that haven't left but are running their own numbers). How do we make up in value the expected difference in value that someone choosing to go another path is looking at. There's only so far an O-6 (many of whom don't really care about you personally) can go with telling you - "you should want to serve just because its service!". Well to me (and roughly equivalent - those choosing to separate) that statement costs $175k to accept for a 3 year tour. Do I want $175k or, having already served my country honorably, want to do another 3 years of queep, and putting up with all the stuff I'd have to put up with. I know my assumptions are very flexible, and also that I didn't factor in an extra 7.5% retirement increase, nor any effects on a VA rating resulting from more service. I lose: current expected situation $176,877.06 assuming no profit sharing $155,677.06 no profit sharing and 6 mos tax free (~15% taxes) $34,261.06 no profit sharing and getting the full bonus $71,677.06 no profit sharing, 6 months tax free and the full bonus $ (63,738.94) with profit sharing and the full bonus $92,877.06 with profit sharing, the full bonus and 6 months tax free $(42,538.94)
  6. I didn’t apply. Just called for info. Not sure why they didn’t accept. They probably offered crappy jobs.
  7. I called too. Just to see what the party line was. Not much info. Maybe some updated HAF policy soon based on the new authorization. Best info: out of 25 slots sitting there for all this time only 15 people even applied and none (zero) of them accepted a return.
  8. If only there was a thread for people to talk about guns, rights, the constitution, etc.
  9. Another reference for Trident. Spectacular customer service. Best rate I could find. Last year I used NBKC and this year I used Trident. This isn't a knock on NBKC by any means. They did great work on my last loan. However, went with Trident because originally Marty got back to me personally to help work through options on a complex sale of a home. Then called when purchasing my next house and nobody could match their rate. Once in the loan process, IMHO, Trident really was unbeatable with customer service. A few standard dev's above anything I've ever come across buying or selling homes, and I've done it A fair amount over the years. My situation was pretty complex and challenging on many accounts. I don't think I could have gotten better service had I been a family member of the employees. Specifically, the quick and applicable communication was great. These days I feel like many businesses ignore calls, fail to respond, feign misunderstanding complaints, etc. because it's just too much work/cost to provide great customer service. Trident was the opposite. Seeking out issues in the background and stopping problems before they interfered with closing. Just superb work. Thanks.
  10. C-21's will face another draw down this year. C Springs AD unit closing. All guard except C Spings going/gone, leaving Scott, ADW and Ramstein. AFFSA jets going/gone. 458 AS at Scott is the only traditional Flying Squadron to support the large amount of Base taskers with TRANSCOM, SDDC, and AMC. Lots of extra busy work from that on top of housing the un-fenced FTU within an operational unit. ADW would be nice. Scott and ADW maintain a steady deployment rotation for the desert C-21's and the DV plans billets in the CAOC. As far as promotion goes, don't go to the C-21 world and expect to get DP on your PRF at ADW and Ramstein. ADW is a GSU with no visibility at the WG, and no real WG level jobs/vis. Ramstein has a fairly significant amount of former top 10% MWS types, and the 86 AW is slightly C-130 centric. Also, with the drawdown, the PFT slots are likely filled for PQP's throughout the rest of the FY, so in the entire AF there may only be one or two (if any) people that will get to go into the C-21 world this year that are not leadership hires. That being said, the C-21 community is a great place, and will continue to be so as long as the drawdown gets managed well. Really good people, great trips that get you back home every night almost. Incredibly fun jet to fly. If you are over 5'8, the jet may be uncomfortable, so if you have back or knee issues, think twice.
  11. CHSC17driver, Likely what happened was that your case was, for better or worse, assigned to the 375 AW/CC in CMS (Case Management System). It's probably less work to get the sign-off by the 375th AW/CC than it is to personally fight the entire battle to get your electrons reassigned (if it's even the correct path). I'd suggest writing an email to the 375 AW/CCE inbox with a description of your circumstances, and see if they wouldn't mind getting it approved by the WG/CC. If they can't approve it they have the ability to work the issue directly with the MPF/CC from a better angle, and it would be in their best interest since the CMS case will be hanging in their case load until resolved. (If it is that type of issue).
