  1. @ClearedHot What did you end up going with?

My requirements are pretty minimal.. was thinking of just going with their cheapest single bay and a reasonable hard drive. Mostly just want to backup family photos and videos, organize and manage them, view/distribute as necessary.

I would have said I am technically inclined.. but those penguins have long ago jumped off the iceberg. Synology definitely looks user friendly.

Being able to expand and store home security footage in the future would be nice too. But maybe that needs to be a whole separate system?

This is why you don't drop it from C-17's using hi-v chutes.   The mission planner should get choked out for that.  They're too worried about coming back with a bullet hole in their precious budda.  Hell, the crew probably gets decorated for this drop.   It's like we didn't spend a decade dropping shit in afghanistan and learning all those lessons (A: Don't let C-17's drop it, and B: use low-v chutes if you don't want to kill unaware people and break the shit you're dropping).

Choke the mission planner or DIRMOBFOR?

That was known at least a couple years ago, but of course there was a massive effort to suppress said information.  Similarly I got a good laugh out of Fauci recently admitting the 6 ft distancing rule was basically pulled out of his ass and had no scientific data to support it (keep in mind the rest of the world did 1m from the beginning).

It was known from day one by anyone with a functioning brain. Sadly, that is less than 49% of our country.

While everyone is busy not giving you financial advice...

Here's a thought, how about swinging for the fences toward financial independence?

Did you have income in 2023?  If so, start a Roth IRA, and while you're at it, contribute to 2024 as well.  $6500 +$7000 = $13500.

Use the remaining $11500 to budget for fully contributing to your Roth IRA on January 1st every year going forward.

THEN, when you get promoted, take half of the promotion pay increase every month and put it in your Roth TSP.

That's just a start; you should be thinking long term of how to budget so that you can fully contribute every year with your first few paychecks toward your Roth TSP; just takes having about $30k in cash to live off of, then you can set your Roth TSP to 100% at the beginning of the year for a few months.  Once your paycheck comes back, save up the $30k over the rest of the year to get ready for next year.  Front loading your Roth TSP is an O4 time horizon goal, don't rush it and get into a binge/purge financial cycle.  And, for the love of all that is holy, this should be the LAST consumer debt, aside from a house, that you ever touch.  You've got a good job and great career ahead of you, use it to live truly well.

(hint: if you're single this whole exercise becomes exponentially easier)

If you’re under the new retirement system.. this is bad advice. If you front load your TSP, you lose out on some of the government match (5% max) in the remaining months of the year.

To maximize dollars, you need to make plan out what you’ll make during the year and set a consistent percentage that allows you to hit the max during the final month of the year. OR, front load, like described above, but ensure you can contribute 5% yourself for all remaining months of the year.

Here's the problem with having 25K.  In theory you'll put it in a HYSA and let it sit.  But you won't.  Having 25K at that age and leaving it alone is very tough.

Be disciplined. If your plan is to make 1.6% for a few years, do that.

I think TBills are paying around 5.5% if you’re worried about touching the money early.

  6. It needs to be interesting to you. I wanted to learn this stuff.

Take notes as you read with one and paper, even if you never reference them, writing something down physically helps me remember.

Also flash cards. And use your classmates, make study guides together.

  7. Spent 3.5 years in Germany as a young Lt/Capt with a dog, wife, no kids. We traveled all over Europe by car—made for some pretty cool experiences we would’ve missed without him (lab/put mix). Stuff like exploring historic parks in cities to get him a morning walk or hikes in random towns.

Restaurants were mostly very dog friendly. Occasionally left him with a great German dog lady when we travelled by air.

Zero regrets bringing our dog to Europe.

Outside of the military where orders come with the territory (and if you're not willing to subject yourself to them, get out), I have absolutely never been ordered to take a vaccine of any kind in my entire life.  Neither have you or anyone else on this forum.

False. California requires vaccines for kids to attend school (public or private). The only way to avoid a vaccine is home school. While not an issue or applicable to my family, I’d say there are a lot of dual-income required to live in CA families who have to send their kids to school, therefore, it’s effectively mandated for them.

  9. Sucks that it happened to you, but you’ll be alright. I have a good friend who washed out Viper b course years ago, he maintained the tactical mindset and brought it with him to the Herk. He was/is a standout aviator and dude, he’s done well for himself in his career as well.

    Is that including hotels?

The $500 is for travel only, airfare. Mileage, etc. can’t be used for hotels or a rental. My reserve unit always covered the hotel, whether I was on AT or IDT. My guard unit does not appear to do so.. from what I understand, they will cover AT and UTA, but not AFTP or RUTAs. I’m still new though.

I’d like to see the person who can’t hold a fast food job because of mental illness/drug use magically afford a place of living because someone just built a dwelling. Sounds fantastic…al.

They don’t need to afford it, that’s the taxpayers job
