Yeah but you can say that about every platform in a contested environment. Here's another attempt to post the link without trying to spam BO . net https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqkI51xEDio The critique is now I think due to the proliferation of really good small GBAD systems (not just MANPADs) but the adaptation of new / novel technologies like FPV drone attacks on lower, slower moving platforms This attack was unsuccessful but you can see where this is gonna go https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidaxe/2023/09/06/a-ukrainian-racing-drone-nearly-kamikazed-a-russian-attack-helicopter/?sh=4893c4591af9

Carroll’s video is not about attack helicopters but a discussion on the current state of the Ukrainian air war Task and Purpose video is Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Apologies for the crappy links but go to the YouTube and it’s Ward Carrol’s latest interview with Justin Bronk and the second video was from Task and Purpose asking provocatively if the Attack Helicopter dead based on Russia losing 80+ so far, kinda click bait as it started to turn into an Apache propaganda video towards the end (no shade thrown at the venerable Apache with that) but still recommend for the points made pro / con Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Same... Yep, my guess is that more than the currently planned number of VORs will be left on if the do-it-yourself EM jamming becomes more common...

They don't think that it matters, we're victims in a way of our own success. Gulf War 1, the Balkans, GWOT, Libya, Syria, etc... they see examples of our current family of systems coming home with wins and just think that no matter what it will all work out in the end so don't worry about it, keep the jobs, base, logistics and the 70 year old iron flying, we'll always win and buy a few of the now 6.9 billion a tail new platform...

More on light fighters, Indian industry concept: https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/defense/2023-02-20/hindustan-aeronautics-unveils-lead-fighter-trainer-project Sounds kinda like the F-20 or the Textron Scorpion as there’s no IAF requirement or RFP but Hindustan Aeronautics sees a market opportunity

Yup, one could argue this is what the USMC is supposed to do (small wars as historically these things were called) but as they are pivoting to a different force structure and as most operations are joint this is where the USAF could take the lead and build a light AF to integrate with the other components light forces As the unnamed official in the quote expressed, we can’t afford to fly exquisite iron on routine missions It’s the requirements using history and a sober assessment of likely missions as a guide to build out this collection of platforms & systems X amount of pallets per day between FOBs, X amount of CAPs when supporting a stabilization force of X size, etc… these missions would overlap with other NG and ANG missions Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Concur but one can still argue on BO for it and other lost causes… Light capabilities in general are needed for MOOTW (dating myself with that term but it captures a lot of what we do now and likely in the future) Light air mobility, light fighter, low footprint high endurance RPA, ACE light logistics, etc… just my retired guard bubba cents but this could doctrinally fit into the Guard or AFSOC (sts) with the right leadership seeing that we will be deterring and occasionally fighting in places other than the SCS against the forces of chaos with capes that require not a sledgehammer but a small hammer Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Trainer / Light fighters in the news... https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/t-7-arrives-at-edwards-usaf-eyeing-light-fighter-version#:~:text=T-7 Arrives At Edwards%2C USAF Eyeing Light Fighter Version and from SK... KAI Charts Out Single-Seat FA-50 Road Map | Aviation Week Network F-7 concept art... New FA-50 concept... From The WZ article: "What is clear is that we can't afford to police the Super Bowl with an F-22," the same individual told Jennings in Madrid. Price and allies needing cheaper iron that will integrate well with all their other systems... this should be driving this idea higher on the AF to do list.

Good, sounds like you’re going the right direction As to BA or BS, to the Guard / AF I’m not sure it would matter or how much in whatever candidate selection method they are using now I never sat on a SUPT candidate selection board but I did on several promotion and interview boards If we knew the candidate was not an immature knucklehead by his / her service in the Wing, that paid the biggest dividends IMHO, good grades, flying time, etc all matter too but your performance in the Wing is where you’ll make your mark I’m telling you something you already know but FWIW If you think you can score a higher gpa with a BA vs BS, and you want that degree then proceed that route Except for test pilot / astronaut, the tech degree doesn’t matter Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Questions: Are you already in college? Have you started talking to Guard units? Would you be willing to enlist first in a Guard unit or join only if they offered a commission and SUPT slot? Have you started flying? If you can’t fly for the Guard what’s plan B, C, etc…? Assuming you are in the Guard at that time Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Decent discussion I think it (however you define the problem) is as Thomas Sowell said there are no solutions only trade offs If we institute a WO or flying only career track does that start to turn the AF into a subordinate service maybe not in name but reality, if we compare officers only to officers from the same career fields does that inevitably block some career fields from Col / GO slots, if we allow for promotion deferment do we set ourselves up for an unbalanced officer cadre? My two cents, experimenting with the above and other policy changes is probably worth the risk at this point Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Army aviators get kicked in the nads
Clark Griswold replied to ClearedHot's topic in General Discussion
Nope, while I was in ROTC the prior E’s were not active enlisted members on an enlistment contract so no soup for them or no prior service cadets That’s from 24 years ago so buyer beware but I’d be surprised that policy would have changed Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

IDK, do we choose or do we have to as the for now global leader trying to sustain an aspirational fairly decent global system or are we told we have to by apathetic leaders, neocons, globalists and naïve utopians? My two cents it’s both in varying degrees per case, the other systems and their players will keep trying to shape the world even if we lose interest in it so we have to keep playing, how is the question(s)? Draft, war bonds, congressional oversight, legal requirements for military mission strategic objectives stated publicly with ways, means specified, etc….
