  1. I was there from Tuesday through Saturday. It is truly one of the best weeks of my year. It seemed that the military presence was down bit from last year, or maybe it just seemed that way because of the two years before that when there was virtually nothing mil there. As usual I got to meet some amazing people. One cattle rancher from Oklahoma who was there with his Marchetti s.211 gave one of my Zoo recruits a ride in his jet and I think helped solidify her decision to go AF. I also got a 2-hour VIP golf cart tour of the grounds with Nicole, the lovely young digital media specialist for EAA. If you're ever there and want to see everything with a pleasant, constant narrative, she is the person to see.

  2. If you have a family, the Keys Gate Communities are close to the base and have decent school choices but the prices and fees are high. BAH is pretty high as well, so it should be a wash. If you're single or no kids (or very young kids), the Mandarin Lakes development in Naranja has less expensive homes and fees and a great clubhouse and pool, but it is a patrolled neighborhood, not gated like Keys Gate. Chapman Elementary in Naranja is passable, but the middle and high school are not very good. Crime is not bad in Mandarin Lakes as long as you use common sense. Alarm company services are included in your community fees. Both of these areas are within 5-10 minutes of base and have good access to the highways and shopping. The best reason to stay further south than Cutler Bay/Kendall area is quicker access to Key Largo and the rest of the Keys. Depending on your circumstances you might like to be farther north for access to the Miami night life. There's advantages to both.

  3. I'm not sure if you ever got an answer brewskis. I live in Appleton and work in Oshkosh and I'd be happy to answer any questions you or anyone else has about the area. I'll only be on the EAA grounds next Wednesday and Thursday since my boss doesn't think that AirVenture is as important as I do and won't give me the whole week off.

  5. Headed to Laughlin this week. Can anyone provide an update on the housing situation (is anyone being given a duplex straight away)? Also, I've heard that in the past your duplex-mate had to be within one pilot training class. Anyone know if that is still the case?

Last year when all of the 2011 Zoomies arrived in July housing was a mess. The dorms were full and so were the 2 BR student duplexes (Carlson St. and Ciarfeo St.). Some of the students lived in Laughlin Manor for two months or more waiting for housing. They ended up opening some of the Senior Enlisted housing to the students and many of them got put into 4 BR units with 4 Lts sharing a unit. The rules do say that roommates need to be within one class of each other, but last year it wasn't always followed. Some of the people that they put together are 4 classes apart. Can't say that this year will be the same, though.
