This is true of the Air Force enlisted force in general. As a young Captain, I once had a TSgt in my office tell me that he'd like to see me try telling a Chief something (I forget what we were talking about, but it was along the lines of getting chiefed) because officers generally had no authority over E-7+ until making O-4 or O-5. He wasn't trying to be a smartass about it, and the guy was a very sharp enlisted troop, but the mindset was very real. An airman leaves basic with a general respect/fear of god of any officer from O-1+, but at some point along the way operationally, we allow a mindset that the food chain is somehow parallel, and an O-1 is nothing more than a glorified E-1.

Foul. You know a service has lost its focus when it's about uniformity during ceremonies of all things. What is this, the Hitler youth? Where is the focus on the actual mission? Is Al Qaeda going to spontaneously burst into flames if they hear the Airmen's creed or Air Force Song? And this, friends, is exactly what is wrong with the Air Force. The Chiefs, first shirts, et al have all been given free reign to go nuts with this horseshit. It is a fundamental failure in that WG/CC's leadership to allow this to go on (and even endorse it), and it's what gives these folks leverage to actually believe that in this man's Air Force E-8+ > O-4 and below. This is unsat. The irony is that this long-winded nonsensical policy was delivered via e-mail. Leadership via e-mail is no leadership at all. How about overcoming the challenge that is the actual mission? Until Finance, the MPF, maintenance, and ops all operate and execute with zero errors, there is no time to focus on anything but the mission. And we are certainly not there yet (nor will we ever be at this pace). Imagine if everyone took this time to learn their job instead, how productive we'd actually be. No, that's not the way the world works. Not everyone deserves a trophy. This idiot needs to spend more time outside the wire. The bar should never be mandatory, nor should you give guys shit for not hanging out in the bar after a debrief every day. The bar is a great place for tradition and camaraderie (and some learning), but it should never be forced. You're just keeping dudes from their families and real lives while you shoot your watch. If you didn't get the appropriate lessons learned in your debrief in the vault in a timely manner, you're doing it wrong (or you don't have a mission that requires a vault debrief). Now roll calls, First Fridays, et al? Cleared hot. Lock the fucking door and expect attendance or assess bar fines appropriately.

No, I'm hearing that the F-35 keeps getting slipped further and further to the right and costs going higher and higher. It's what should have been done in the first place. Compared to what? I think you'll definitely see upgrades in the Viper similar to what has happened with the Eagle, with no viable 5th gen replacement with the numbers or timeline we were promised. Retirement home fodder.

This was assuming the F-35 coming online as planned, so in that regard, a lot has changed. The big wigs don't want to buy Block 69s off the showroom floor, but the odds of major upgrades to keep the MMC fleet flying are pretty high as a stop gap.

The Block 30 most likely is, 40/50s not so much. I'd be surprised if the Block 30 makes it to SCU 8.
