  1. This could go in the other thread but the AF did give me, average joe, non shiny penny, IDE via correspondence only a shot at running a squadron a few months back. So far so good. And for the record you have no idea until you take that guidon what it truly is like.

  2. This could end up being an excellent case-study on the negatives of over-reliance on cockpit automation when task saturated. I honestly cannot tell if the HUD comment is tongue-in-cheek. I hope it is. I remember years ago when we did a gas-and-go with a four-ship at Laughlin. We grabbed a bite in the Base Ops snack bar and got in a conversation with the students about the C-model. They told us a No-HUD landing was a Special Syllabus event flown dual... and that if the HUD goes out while solo, it was one to a full stop. We initially thought they were kidding. The dreaded "no HUD T-38 landing" has stymied many a great aviator. Maybe some emphasis on proficiency with backup instruments would be a good thing for all communities?

  5. I read a bunch and know a decent amount about computer modeling; it’s how I’m skeptical of pinning everything on humans in the US with models trained on poor data while simultaneously giving a pass to China and India. Airplanes are pretty real; man-made global warming is an unprovable theory. You don’t have a control system to contrast against, and the current computer models are all recognizing humans as the cause because they’re incredibly limited. But you’re an arrogant troll only interested in your religion so no, this won’t matter. Edit: also, you should read the rational optimist by Matthew Ridley. Every time someone makes some grim global prediction, it works out. Stop freaking out and live your life.

  6. Glad to hear you still have the fight. Is your commander in the fight with you? Honestly, he/she SHOULD be the one leading that fight with rage, fury, and an unquenchable lust for justice. You can still win that fight, I am simply curious as to the current state of leadership. BL: It is not your job to write your OPR, PRF, or get to the bottom of why you did or did not get promoted. That's a commander's job. If your commander is not leading that fight, I would gladly rip that faggotrous pin off their chest. Ability to command and lead is demonstrated, not earned.

  7. In typical military fashion, I was just informed by the POC that the board is back on. Deadline is still 31 October. Again, feel free to PM me if you need the PDFs. Good luck to everyone!

  8. Bird in the hand, and what not. Especially in this environment. Secondly, you’re on the outside looking in, so while it sounds like you have done your due diligence on missions, you won’t know what it really all means until you’re doing it. Lots of people love “XYZ” when they walk into UPT; a couple flights in/after talking to people/etc., they realize they didn’t want what they thought they wanted and shift priorities/wants. Third, people play a huge part. In the heavy world, you’re gonna be sitting next to folks for a long time. Better in the long run to like the people than the mission, IMHO. After all that, you can commit and then change if you get another offer. The first unit will have backups for that reason. It’s hit or miss whether they think it’s a scumbag move to take a slot and then go somewhere else, but it’s also your life at the end of the day.

  11. If you already swore in, they own you. Explain the situation to them ASAP. They might decide to release you and hire an alternate. They might say no. Since you already swore in, the decision is their's. Best thing you can do is let them know immediately so that if they do decide to release you they don't waste anymore of their time and resources onboarding you.

  12. Well, that answers everyone's question about line numbers. You are ordered for pin-on based on merit within your functional category, and the pin-on increments are broken out by functional category accordingly. Makes sense -- would've been hard to order the entire list 1/n. Also, this table has the first pin-ons taking place 1Nov (Senate pending) so I would expect to see some line numbers popping up on VMPF very soon (couple days at most).

  13. Promotion Increments for 1 Nov & 1 Dec are loaded to MyPers .... Officers Promotions --> (scroll down for) Increments to Lt Col EDIT: Forgot part 2 ... CC's/SR's have your specific line numbers, otherwise it should flow thru MILPDS to vMPF (Career Data Brief) within 24-48 hrs.

  15. Have you considered looking at other internal positions? Move around the company to a different department or something. You've been there long enough to likely be past any new hire probation kind of situation. We have people move internal positions at my company all the time when they feel they're getting stagnant.

  16. Would like to reiterate what many have said already. Don’t quit your current job as it puts food on the table and a roof over your heads. Get selected, make it thru all the training, etc. and still believe it’s your passion = fantastic. Do not pass the physical, UPT, etc and you may be in a much more vulnerable situation than ever before. Definitely take the gamble if it’s truly in you and don’t give up. Timing and having options reigns King. Nothing more Dangerous than a Man with Options. *Burned out at age 26 is kind of early to be burned out of most anything. Granted, it’s better to figure out your path earlier the better.

  18. Yep, and its difficult for people to really know where they are on the curve. I don’t think anyone has ever done more to amplify my generally skeptical attitude on any topic more than SoH’s emotive postings.... So much so that I’m skeptical of his authenticity.

  22. Everything FourFans said is spot on. I do think it’s Autumn Foley, she’s been there for awhile. The only additional piece of advice, is scour your As Meet records. If you find anything missing or incorrect, there’s a process to apply and meet a supplemental board. If your missing an OPR, could be a game changer. The guy punch is real, and I never really get more than “needed more O6 strats”. Keep your head up, different opportunities are available to you now.

  24. If I may offer a completely different perspective. Friend, you haven't lost your drive, your desire, your motivation. You've lost your heart. If you think that you'll be able to jump to the Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, Homeland Security (all of which have flying) and that said flying job will stir you back to who you want to be by scratching that itch, you're wrong. Oh, don't hear me wrong. The itch is real and so is your disgust with your current situation. Very real, very valid, very potent, and very very treacherous. From what I can hear, the solution you are seeking isn't the real antidote...it's a band-aid...granted, it's a very comforting one, but a short term solution none-the-less. Unless you get your heart back, you will get bled dry by a thousand other tiny cuts that any other institution WILL inflict. The USAF did it to me when I was about 27, and many other's on this board will attest to the same. You need to get your heart back so you can endure that course. My recommendation is to definitely go snowboarding. Take some time to clear the perspective...preferably without a smart phone. Decide about quitting your job afterwards. Take a book with you too: "Becoming a King" by Morgan Snyder. Only 200 pages. It might help you re-discover the real fire and where your heart went. Without your heart, nothing you try will succeed. Rediscover it though, and you're in a whole new ball-game. What I hear about your work situation could benefit, in the short term, from an adjustment of perspective...the cubicle is not the prison, it's the enabling water-fountain and or spring-board to finance your real career/adventure/commissioning. Endure only as much as you have to. Don't jump early, but definitely don't jump late. Leverage it until you don't need it anymore...and it sounds like you still might need it...but I'm just guessing on that last part. Afraid of money mistakes you've made? Ok, don't make those mistakes again. It don't mean you're dumb, it means you've had an experience and learned from it. What you've done DOES NOT define who you are nor what you will do in the future, unless you let it. Go get your heart back. You want a change of career into flying and you won't take no for an answer? Ok. Blitz through your instrument and commercial ratings like you mean it, and start flying night cargo. I'm being completely serious here. Do it. Quit your job and hang it out there. Do it, live in squalor for season, make some mistakes, learn from them, and move on. If that's what it takes to get your heart back, it's FAR better than moving from bad situation to bad solution. That road...the one where you fix today by jumping to what looks like greener pastures in the military...(as several here have alluded to) will only lead you right back to the discontent you feel right now, only it will be worse, because then you'll be saddled with a 8-10 year commitment to the military that you have no choice about. Go get your heart back (pro-tip, let your wife know what's going on, but do not look to her for the answer of finding your heart), then go get your flying career. If those goals coincide, all-the-better, but measure the cost first. You may decide to wait, but don't stand still. Standing still is indecision. Waiting has purpose, meaning, and a trigger to end it. Whatever you do: Don't stand still. FF
