It’s a complete joke that the Democratic Party is trying to align itself against brutal policing and in favor of criminal justice reform.

  3. I think this is the wrong question. It's what moderates are saying about them in comparison to Trump and Pence, and their current/past achievements and failures. We're not electing in a vacuum, this is politics and Biden just picked a black woman as his VP. "BuT tHaT's RaCiSt/SeXiSt!" Whatever, it's political. "Uncle Joe" is trying to shore up what he sees as some weaknesses in his elect-ability as well as a VP he can work with. Same thing Trump did with Pence, and so on down the line. For those screaming about it...did the VP pick really sway you one way or the other? Did Palin when McCain picked her? Did you cry the same thing then?

  6. I wish they bring back Warrant Officers to be filled by the E-6 who is shit hot on the flight line, knows his job inside and out and makes the right decisions that produce sorties. The problem with the good troops is that a E-8/E-9 above him knows he is the go to guy and they keep him that position making money for the wing and move the has been's to other jobs that allow them to career progress and somehow get promoted to E-9. In the enlisted world job title counts more than war fighter when it comes to their board score, the more job titles the better it looks. Doesn't matter they fired you from all those positions and moved him somewhere else, and nobody wrote the guy a honest EPR. I'm used to be standing tall in front of the CC desk after writing honest EPR's for guys I moved to the snack bar, mops and brooms, and is assigned to every aircraft wash. I was foolishly thinking being honest would keep these disasters from ever getting into a slot that would make other good troops miserable. I was wrong. This allows a TSgt a career path that a E-9 can't torpedo because if TSgt leaves his life gets harder. When I was in MSgt was tested for and I studied my butt off to make it, I hear it is now a board score and you got play the game. Being a WO1 these good troops would be where the AF needs them training and supervising young Airmen while forgoing the hyphenated American pray breakfast face time and backstabbing for the Senior Rater endorsement. But we all know the AF will not do it because enlisted Jesus doesn't want to salute these guys.

  10. The "how did we get here" question IRT our criminal justice system, policing and systemic racism is being asked and will continue to be asked throughout this election cycle. Biden and Harris have a lot of explaining to do. That was my point with the moderates. I believe moderates will lean towards law and order and they will stay away from politicians who contributed to shaping our current criminal justice system. Rioting and looting only cements peoples belief in law and order policies. Folks on the right certainly will not be plucked away from voting Republican even if they aren't Trump fans. So where does that leave the Dems? As you said above, "even if their “tough on crime” stances from, say, the 90s, put them at odds with where the Democratic Party in particular is today". Again, not a good look in my opinion. I think Americans are even more sick of career politicians today than they were in 2016. Career politicians created all of these problems but now are running on fixing them. Same old same old. I don't think people are interested in hearing any more of that.

  11. This. Mostly. However, Biden's old, frail, and, IMO, not all there anymore. For a fair number of people, his selection for his VP is also about completing the term in office, never mind a second term. In the political realm, should Biden win, he's going into his Presidency as a self-proclaimed lame duck. The levers of power will care about his VP, not so much him. But for my purposes, I think this is a good choice.

The critique on criminal justice is typically from the left. “They supported policies that locked up too many people for too long and didn’t vigorously investigate bad cops.” I don’t disagree with that critique but don’t find it disqualifying either especially given their current stances when compared with what they supported previously. So if you are more conservative than the left wing of the Democratic Party, ie moderates compared to the nation as a whole, I think that the Biden/Harris history of being “tough on crime” might even be a strength rather than a liability. IMHO it will be challenging for the GOP to at the same time critique Biden/Harris for being too harsh on crime while at the same time supporting policies that are even harsher. Caricatures work best when there is a kernel of truth, and there’s not really a kernel of truth in saying Biden/Harris are leaders of some liberal ANTIFA mob when they’re an old white guy who wrote the 90s crime bill and a former DA and AG. My original point was that at no time were Biden or Harris really outside they mainstream of national views on criminal justice, even if their “tough on crime” stances from, say, the 90s, but them at odds with where the Democratic Party in particular is today. The Dem Party, Biden/Harris, and to a lesser extent America as a whole have evolved a bit toward wanting less-harsh criminal justice measures applied, especially to low-level non-violent drug offenders, eg the pair have moved their positions along with public opinion rather than remaining strict ideologues. The most I can say about Biden/Harris is that I enthusiastically support their vision for the country going forward and I think they will do an excellent job governing. Biden was not my first choice for the top of the ticket but he’s the right person for this moment. My critiques of him are mostly centered on his age and some really bad calls on foreign policy in the past. That being said he’s perfectly acceptable as the leader of the party and would is a credible and plausible President. After Biden won the primary convincingly over several folks I liked better, Harris was my top VP choice to pair with him. I’m 100% happy with her being selected and think she’ll make a good VP and I’m assuming strong nominee for President in 2024.

  15. The “Kamala is too tough on crime” argument is gonna be hard to make while simultaneously claiming the Dems hate cops and want chaos in the street. I agree that tough-on-crime policies have failed a lot of people for a long time, and am glad I have some folks on the right that might agree. That being said, I don’t think Harris was particularly bad as a DA or AG, just like Biden wasn’t particularly bad as a Senator on these issues. Some on the left in particular will vehemently disagree. I saw they were both products of the time, and I care more about what they will do now and when in power in the next administration than the ins and outs of what policy they supported 40, 20, or even 10 years ago.

  16. Non-airline civil service job here. You can get hired off the street, go through all training, and pop out the other end and head back to your job. Actually, even more, the ~2 years of UPT pipeline actually don’t count toward the 5 year USERRA limit. When you spit out the other end, the above posters are right about them wanting to make sure you can feed your fam/pay your bills, which is why they ask. There is the potential of just picking up orders (Troughing/Bumming), but COVID might throw a wrench in the availability of that as folks come back from the airlines. Guard seems to be more available for orders, but that’s just anecdotal from what I’ve heard and it can vary greatly by unit/airframe. The Reserves offer TDART, which is an up to 4-year, non-orders, full-time GS job. You’re in your flight suitm working at the unit, but it’s not on orders, so you don’t get any USERRA protections if you’re trying to hold onto your old job and you might have to pick between the two. But, the positive is that it’s an “entitlement,” which means that you’re owed the job and it’s yours, if you want.

  18. I know you meant this snidely, but Biden picked Harris. Good choice IMHO, she was my fav of the people Biden apparently had on his shortlist. Smart, tough debater, good campaigner, previously vetted, current holder of high office, the proper age to balance the ticket.

  25. ‘Mildenhall model’, if approved, is doing away with the groups, creating a pseudo A-staff under the wing, and moving some maintenance back into the ops squadron. It’s basically what I saw in the Navy for 15 years, and it does have goods and bads, but if it pushes some waiver authority and go/no-go decisions to the SQ/CC level, it’ll be a really good thing.

  28. Weird how the Navy/USMC can figure out a way to not have 6-9 middle men in every organization, and the squadron COMMANDER commands real authority, yet the Air Force thinks it is impossible. We are such a bloated organization. It’s ridiculous how many random organizations there are that shouldn’t exist/be independent entities, and only exist to create another useless billet for “command.”

  29. First step to fixing staff issues is to eliminate the Group staff. Single most useless organization I’ve seen. They exist to be middle men. I’ve actually been counting, and my last 7 interactions with them have produced exactly zero. Outside of the directorates, the number of execs they’re pulling from ops units to do nothing but forward emails and work on a rack and stack is a joke.

  30. Shack. Aircrew (not just pilots) are the war fighters of the AF. Could you immagine an Army staff with 0 infantry, armor or artillery expereince. A lot of people disdain staff but in all honesty some people really love and thrive in it. For the first time in your military career you get to think big picture/strategic and you can help shape some very large plans across an Enterprise. Definitely not for everyone but for the people that are beat to death from being line IPs year in and out, it offers a welcome change of pace with a new an enhanced skill set. Is it for everyone? Probably not. But when has reducing the number of oppurtunities in a career field ever helped that career field thrive. We need to keep doors open not close them. The pilot retention crisis isnt about people wanting staff, not wanting staff, not wanting RPAs, wanting more UPT jobs, whatever.... The key thread to all of this is that it's really about people wanting a wide array of oppurtunities and a slight a bit of control to vector themselves to where their own interest lie.

  31. Think big picture Joint level. It saddens me to see Force Support O5 working FMS cases or non-pilots reciting buzzwords about weapon systems to Joint planners and Foreign partners. Our international allies look to us for expert advice, do you really want non-pilots spew bullshit to these allies? We need experienced and knowledgeable rated guys at the Joint level!

  32. Even better, I’ve been both PT and FT with the flight pay change and still get 6-9 paychecks/mo regardless of status. Why is it so hard for support functions to do their job effectively. The way they operate, I’d be GAB-ing 90% of my sorties due solely to pilot error/incompetence. The other 5% would be something truly out of my control, and the remaining 5% I’d get airborne and summarily expect everyone to be stoked and thank me for a job well done.
