  1. You either have shitty leadership or they don't like you (or both) if you are coming up to a Maj board and have no clue about your SOS plans. If you care about your career, then ask the question or just do it in correspondence. The truth is that unless you are top 10% the USAF doesn't go out of their way to help your career plans and it's up to your own motivation to find your way. I'm always baffled why people avoid 6 weeks of drinking in Montgomery with weekends on the gulf with literally no responsibility but to show up to class relatively sober each day and get released early afternoon. Yes it's dumb. Have I done dumber things in the military? You bet. At some point you realize some of the easiest money you've made in your career were when you were a student...and any opportunity to be one again is generally a good deal.

  2. Thank you. This was supposed to be simple, but ended up being slightly more complicated. 2 surgeries and (so far) one round of Radioactive Iodine. Find out next week if I am finally done and can work on getting my medical back. Will post that process later, when it is complete, to help others. Several people, both AF and Army I was in Afghanistan with have been diagnosed with the same "interesting" (Doctor's words not mine) Thyroid cancer. What do you think the VA said? Not service connected. Will also post the results of that battle when it concludes.... in 20 years. Go to the doctor every year. If you don't like to do that at least have blood work done. My cancer was found by accident, never would have been found at all until it was to late if my Family Doctor hadn't noticed something in my blood work that just didn't look right to him.

  3. I'm wondering when the 737 Max passenger-to-freighter conversion will be announced...and if Purple will be the launch customer, hehe. Fred loves a good deal...and I bet there'll be a fire sale of customer return Maxes at some point.

  4. Dude, if you’re pressing the cutoff for SOS and nobody has indicated that you’ll go 1) your leadership really really doesn’t like your act or 2) has forgotten. More likely 2 is true. Why roll the bones on meeting the board without it? If you’re a pilot, you’ll still be under an ADSC when you pin on. No reason not to take the money in exchange for a vacation to Maxwell. Ask your Bobs. Remember, there’s rarely a secret plan, oversights are common, and nobody cares about managing your career but you.

  5. Surprised they didn't just go back to KOSC, plenty of isolation there.

  7. Why aren't CCs and Wing Kings more open and honest about who may or may not be promoted? Or do they simply not have a clue about who will be promoted to O-4/O-5? I was talking to my CC about a Flt/CC who isn't going to be submitted for school. I told the CC you have to tell him how he isn't performing well and what he can do better. I spoke with the guy and he said if I don't make Lt Col, I'm okay with all the time I've spent with my family. I shook my head like hell yeah bro. I do feel as though if CCs were more honest about performance, most officers won't stick around in the Air Force.

  8. 47 years ago today. B-52 Linebacker II raid on Hanoi. Good stuff. If anybody is interested (especially bomber guys), I highly recommend the book "The 11 Days of Christmas" about the LB2 operation.

  12. I'm not a pathologist but I feel like the media is overblowing this and we are a following it. For one, of the cases in China, the death rate of the Novel Corona Virus is only about 2%. Compare this to 10% SARS and 35% MERS, the last big epidemics I remember. The prominance of these cases is in Wuhan which is very rural, has limited healthcare and no centralized hospital. Victims in more civilized countries seem to recover after 1-2 weeks. I'm curious what the age/health spectrum of fatalities is because there is likely a predominance of very young/old/already sick in there. There appears to be a misinformation campaign as well, designed ripple the Chinese economy by causing economic scare and withdrawal of Western businesses. I don't feel like getting overly panic'd about this yet.

  13. I noticed they put in a change to the fine print. If you curtail an order/bonus early you'll be penalized for a few years before you can sign another bonus. I can't remember the exact details, but I see what you did there HAF 🤣. Still no one year big bonus.

  17. The Air Guard, MAFFS, and Herk communities (and world) lost three great heroes on Jan 23, 2020. Captain Ian McBeth (Lt Col, MT ANG), First Officer Paul Hudson ((Lt Col (Ret) Marine Corps)), and Flight Engineer Rick DeMorgan, Jr. (18 year USAF FE vet) perished while fighting the fires in Australia. Personally, I was a Navigator in the Montana ANG with Ian for three years and I can't think of any pilot who I'd rather go into combat with. Please, do not speculate on this thread as to the cause of the crash. I just want this thread to be a memorial for those who knew any of these three aviators. We will find out about the details of the crash in due time. https://www.coulsonaviationusa.com/newsmedia

  18. Yeah, I don't know, but I've made my peace with it. Got some great advice from my then Group CC, that I've taken to heart. Straight up told that I probably wouldn't get an opportunity to command (wasn't really gunning for it anyways, and that wasn't a surprise anyways), but because of that, I don't have the pressure to play the game, so go out and find what makes me happy and do it. If I want to just fly, just do it, the pilot shortage isn't getting better. If I want to get out, the airlines are hiring. If I want to do something else, shoot for it without worrying about career progression. Lots of options still out there. And that mindset has given me some great opportunities since. I've found little niches where I can make make my corner of the AF a better place doing something I enjoy, so it ends up being a win-win for me and the AF. If I retire as a major, great, I went out doing what I liked to do. If I make lt col, great, that retirement paycheck will be bigger. My self worth doesn't rely on what's on my shoulders.

  19. 16 yrs ago was a different AF. Hell ,5, 3, different AF. I hear we are looking at 90%+ to O-5 coming up. I’ve known multiple HPO’s would could have timed into 1-star jumping ship recently to airlines. What am I getting at? If you want to fly, do it. As long as you don’t have a DUI or UIF and have min-runned your square filling (SOS/ACSC), in today’s AF, you can fly and will probably promote. *some communities vary I was told multiple times that by choosing flying over career I’d never make O-5. Best choice I ever made was ignoring that advice and choosing what I liked doing. Even if I had been stuck at Maj for life, I’d still choose flying.
