  1. You could do far worse than to “end up” in a bomber...

  2. ACSC In correspondence is useless. Using it as a discriminator was a foul from the beginning and continues to be a highlight in “What’s wrong with the AF”

  3. Well anytime a nonner sends me an email telling me I need to do X CBT, if it’s not on the CSAF’s memo of the only CBTs we are required to do, I send an email back with that memo telling them I won’t do said CBT. So far great success. While I’ve seen a positive reduction in random additional duties, there is still no shortage of the ops group having to do the job of comm, finance, CE (try getting LZ maintenance pushed through ...), etc. On the plus side we have hired like 15 civilians to do DTS, RA, etc so that has been awesome.

  4. LTs are brilliant, but this isn’t their area of expertise. If you need to talk your way out of an accidental drunken home invasion: they’re your experts. “It looks just like my house, and of course I piss in the living room; don’t you?!” Kick ass, and don’t give up something you want. Being old just means you’ll spend less time than the average stud figuring out how to be an officer. (Which is good because it will take you more time to memorize things than your 23 year old classmates. Also longer to pee.) The SRO thing isn’t anything new: Help the LTs prioritize, run rumor/made-up-crisis control, (gently/delicately) point out AETC douchery so they don’t think it’s normal, and help/call/show up when they have admin issues on base. Things you would do for any new guys anywhere else. If you work hard and have a little luck and timing on your side, you’ll get what you want. If you don’t get the luck, there’s a 95% chance you’ll be in love with your airframe in a year anyway. If you’re not, the U-2, B-2 and other selective hiring units will still be hiring.

  8. Never have flown a Super Cub... yet. I'll get some more pics of the Cub and post them. The restoration was done by a place at PVF (Placerville, CA), and is supposedly a well-known place. The guy that bought it is a former U-2 guy who is meticulous about his aircraft, and keeps them in top shape. He's got a Ryan PT-22. And his Stearman was previously owned by the head of the Stearman Restoration Society (or whatever it is called). As you might expect, it looks better than the day it rolled out of Wichita. I'm lucky that 1). he is allowing me to fly his beautiful plane, and 2) that he is allowing me to fly it after seeing how I flew it with him on my checkout. It wasn't particularly stellar. I haven't flown the U-2 in 58 months. I'd be way more confident in my abilities in it tomorrow than I am in the Cub. But the learning curve is a great thing. Loving it!
