  1. I don’t think you can go wrong with either. My point of view as a biased career tanker guy: The KC-135 is truly from a different era when it comes to hand flying it. It’s 1950s vintage through-and-through, so you actually have to FLY THE AIRPLANE. Or it will fly you, I promise. Perhaps not the most exciting missions some days, but flying a 60 year old airplane that has trim tabs, cable flight controls, and a shitload of power takes skill and constant attention. Not much fancy automation, hydraulic flight controls, auto-trim and HUDs to make everyone look like a hero. Never boring to flying that jet.

  5. If you're submitting apps, I'm assuming your intention is to go Guard/Reserve. If you plan on doing only Guard/Reserve for several years, I'd recommend airlift/airdrop. Lots of variety in the mission, always challenging to achieve "greatness" in your position. If you plan on being a part-timer and flying civilian as well, fly tankers. I think it looks slightly better on a resume and the currency requirements are fewer. I've always found it difficult to meet all the airdrop/airland currency requirements without having to sacrifice at the airlines and still have a home life. Merely one dude's opinion. Good luck.

  6. In that case, don’t disqualify yourself from flying fighters because of your on perceived weaknesses. The things that got you offered a job flying heavies will probably translate to getting hired flying fighters (aka you’re probably a good dude). I’ve never flown heavies, but there’s plenty of boring flying in all types of jets. Plenty of exciting flying too. The daily training lines in fighters are more exciting than pilot pro in heavies, but downrange is plenty of sitting on some sort of orbit waiting for something to happen in anything.

  7. There's a lot of straight and level time in both but Airlift has more events / missions that are AP off and can be challenging (Low level, NVG, Assult strip, Airdrop, etc..). Tanker has some events that are require some of that pilot shit (Min Interval TOs, AP off AR, Formation, IP demos, etc...) but there is more time in the Flight Levels with the AP on. Blessed and lucky, got to fly both over my career, Tanker was my first assignment and I enjoyed it and later in the ANG got to do Airlift enjoyed it too, I'm back at a Tanker wing now and still enjoy it. Good trips in both and crappy trips in both and it is even with me as to which I would recommend. Saw more places you would want to go to in the tanker (Pacific, Europe, Canada) dragging fighters / bombers occasionally though. Both communities have their quirks, about equal on what I found good / annoying. Everything is what you make of it. Good luck.

  8. I'll risk it and wade a little into this and say money as is often the case a big difference. Uncle Sugar has very deep pockets to fund its training compared to a civilian operation (whole up company or individual student) that has to watch the bottom line all the time. Also many instructors in the civilian world (whether they are good at teaching or not) are just barely past students themselves and just building hours to move up. Often their only realistic way of doing so. Absolutely nothing to force them to come back and teach down the road after they get a few thousand hours and a lot of good real world lessons under their belt to pass it on. Fortunately a few do exactly that. Is what it is. Military as we've all know can simply order anyone under its purview who it thinks is a good fit to be an instructor to do so and I'm including FAIPs. As some have alluded to a willingness to set aside ego and learn can go along way no matter what realm you are coming from.

  11. All piloting experiences when shared are invaluable to our learning process. While instruction varies depending on outfit (GA vs military as previously mentioned), basic skills are required to maintain rubber side down. Military has more than our share of accidents, but we did or do what others do not depending upon the platform. While flight is a perishable skill overall, military skills are extremely perishable; therefore, repetition is required for proficiency. We have always argued the difference between being proficient vs current as more and more currency items have been pushed to a simulator. Hand flying must stay in the game. GA has the lead statistically in the accident arena based on number of accidents; commercial hits the radar due to the number of lives lost per hull loss despite the lowest number of accidents. Make what you want of it, but I have flown with some exceptional folks on both sides of the fence. I run across some great information from the original GA folks who hit the line with us in the big jet world. Some of the best from the GA world were those who started as Alaska Bush Pilots who became extremely proficient once they grasped the automation world. I will say I wouldn’t have made some of their decisions since I would have never dared to fly in their worst environment - pretty impressive stuff. It’s that niche stuff previously posted. I am less bold and more old like that “bold vs old adage” for pilots, but those who rely on the magenta line vs dumbing things down when necessary concerns me. I must admit to doing a low pass near a water tower to read the town placard to gain my bearings, but that’s what we do or fall back on when you don’t recognize the 2 lane highway... probably wouldn’t hurt to carry binoculars now. Overall, you can learn from anybody with right attitude, but while you trust you must verify unfortunately. In my case, I have tried to learn something new every flight (long haul carrying dog crap out of HKG/actually in HKG right now) as long as I am not learning too much which equates to not doing my job. USAF Proclomation once stated: “Safety is paramount!” If safety was paramount we wouldn’t be flying was my thought. It’s what are you willing to risk, how to mitigate that risk in order to accomplish whatever the goal or endgame. Exposure is a risk! Lucky is better than good, tried and true is better than guessing until your cornered. BE-400, aaaah that Mitsubishi was a fun ride, but so was the Legendary Tweet.

  12. I’ll go to Google and tell them I’m a Weapons School graduate and want them to hire me. Think they’ll give a shit about that? What about a PJ? I doubt they’d care about his MFF qual or dive bubble. I’m not saying CCAF is the same as WIC or anything else, but everything in the military isn’t just a a way to pad your civilian resume. And if I worked at Google and some kid that had served honorably in the military for several years and did some professional development like CCAF along the way, I’d be very interested in that person as a candidate vice some guy that’s fresh out of college that knows how to smoke weed and exist through 4 years.

  14. E's preach about the importance of a CCAF. I had a SNCO call another SNCO out for not having a CCAF. Go to Google and tell them you have your CCAF and you want them to hire you. I talked to the SNCO about the importance of leading and solving problems, but internally I kept feeling just like this in regard to the significance of a CCAF:

  15. What in the holy hell are you on about? I pity you. No reasonable person could read what I wrote and receive it as a politically motivated statement. The mentality you move through life with must be exhausting. I made a comment on the role of a special counsel (any special counsel in any case) and the fact that they don't determine guilt or innocence. That's not their role. And so it would be foolish to assume/claim that they had adjudicated a case as they do not have to power to do so. It was not a comment on Trump or his guilt/innocence. It was a comment on the judicial system, period. That's why Trump wasn't mentioned or hinted at in any way. I don't honestly care what Trump did or didn't do. I don't need legal proceedings against him to tell me he's an embarrassment to the nation and a self-centered, self-serving, pompous, incompetent fool who would break the law whenever and wherever it suits him for personal gain. Enjoy the new house and assignment! Side note: We get a lot of questions on getting a second VA loan if you still have your first one. Yes you can do it but it might require a down payment if you don’t have enough VA entitlement remaining. You need to know the county loan limit and how much your first loan was originally for. How much entitlement left formula: County limit (usually 484,350k) - original loan amount = remaining entitlement https://www.fhfa.gov/DataTools/Downloads/Documents/Conforming-Loan-Limits/FullCountyLoanLimitList2019_HERA-BASED_FINAL_FLAT.pdf If that covers your new purchase price then no down payment is needed If you don’t have enough entitlement left then: Second VA down payment formula: (Purchase price - remaining entitlement) x 25% = down payment By putting down 5% on a second time use VA you lower the VA funding fee from 3.3% to 1.5% which is a huge savings.   18. There is a podcast called "Professionals Playbook" on iTunes and the host (current F-35 pilot) interviews someone who did exactly this. I believe he went through Medical School while being a ANG F-16 pilot. He had to take a pause when we was deployed during residency or something but said he was able to spend time with the deployed trauma units and learned a lot from that experience.

About the most unethical thing I see in this business is lenders quoting high in hopes that the person doesn’t shop around and then when they do they say “well send me their quote and I’ll see what I can do” or “I’ll talk to Sr. management”. So the 90% who don’t shop around get screwed and the 10% get a quote that barely matches or beats by maybe a couple hundred bucks the quote of the ethical guy who was upfront from the beginning. I’ve been doing this for 15+ years and this exact scenario plays out like a record. When this conversation starts do yourself a favor and just run away. Any company that treats anyone, let along a veteran should be ashamed of themselves. Best quote upfront + great service = a great lender. That’s been Trident’s model since I started it and it’s not changing as long as I own the company. Off my soap box...let me know how it turns out with Josh.   20. It's not declaring innocent... But then, even if you're found completely blameless in a court of law, you still wouldn't be declared innocent. You'd be declared "not guilty". Innocent until proven guilty means that innocent is the default. If Trump is not prosecuted and found guilty, he is by definition innocent. It's a bedrock principle of Western law.

  22. Young guys take note. Set yourself up early to be financially independent of the military retirement. Read up on investing during deployments, spend/save/invest your money wisely, and make yourself marketable to the outside world. You will have much less stress when the time comes to decide to stay or punch from the AF.

  25. I spoke to a recruiter from Whiteman about a month ago. The B2 unit hires primarily from within their own unit. If you're dead set on being a B2 pilot, enlist with them.
