  1. “RIFed officers who are deployed, but are scheduled to return after Jan. 1, have the option of cutting their deployment short and returning home by Jan. 1, in which case they would separate no later than April 30. Their other option is to complete some or all of their current deployment and return home after Jan. 1, as long as their deployed commander agrees. Those airmen who remain on deployment will have to separate between 30 days and four months of their return date, and must leave no later than Nov. 30, 2015.   2. $100k would keep me in, no doubt. I feel like this is just a case of “Oh, the RAND study didn’t tell us what we wanted, so we are just going to pretend like it didn’t happen.” I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again after leaving a UPT base last year, instead of just training 1k pilots to leave in 10 years now we are just training 1.4k pilots to leave.

  3. I'm not going to fully answer that because this guy might be interviewing at my unit one day and I don't want to hear my answer thrown back at me. However if you think about it logically you'll find two things: 1) All his other scores are great - why the one low one? It's not a little lower, it's a LOT lower. Why is that? 2) Why even have verbal on the test? Maybe because (especially for fighters) you spend your entire career giving and receiving briefs, internalizing that information immediately and formulating a plan for what's going to happen when $h!t hits the fan. Airborne you have to know and comprehend quickly a vast amount of info that is only given verbally. To me it seems obvious why a fighter pilot would need a high verbal score. DG'd at UPT - congrats. If you are on the way to a fighter you'll soon figure out that UPT was bush-league and likely the easiest 12 months of your next 10 years. It gets harder, not easier.

  5. To be fair, the RAND study did show a drop off in added retention above $30-40k. You get the most people to stay by giving $100k, but you still get a bunch of those at $30-40k. That said, if this was really a "crisis" to Big Blue, HAF would still ask for the $100k to keep the most people--that they don't have the guts/desire to even ask says something.

  6. What i did was start working my way around clockwise. If the yellow arrow pointed north east i knew the first square clockwise was east, the next was south, then west, then north. It wasn't super fast but it was consistent. After practice it can be pretty quick.

  10. Everything you are asking about is protected by USERRA. Your new boss can be douchey about it all he/she wants, but at the end of the day you are protected by federal law. Familiarize yourself with USERRA protections (because your company likely won't), get in touch with the companies military affairs personnel, and stand your ground if they are trying to give you the shaft.

  16. The speculation that I've heard was that there was a combination of basically spatial D and poor airmanship. The spatial D was the minor upset while IMC, perhaps with a somatogravic "head-up illusion" where the FO perceived the acceleration as a more dramatic pitch-up than what actually occurred (and requiring a more dramatic pitch-down to counter). It may have also been combined with a flight director commanding something that also didn't add up in the FO's mind. The poor airmanship was just the inability to fight through the startle effect, turn off the automation, get on the dials, and just fly the airplane. One of the 767 sim instructors I know said it was like a 4-5 second duration, full-yoke-forward input required to get to 49 degrees nose low. The only way I can see that is with the FO just basically becoming frozen by the startle effect and unable to mentally sort out what was happening. Sometimes good pilots make huge mistakes. Sometimes poor pilots make even bigger ones.

  17. That’s ignorant at best, whoever taught you that doesn’t know how this all works. If your training unit or eventual CAF unit doesn’t like you, you won’t fly fighters or for long. Other than that, you haven’t been paying attention.

  18. Tyking, don’t take the sport bitching on this thread as an absolute measure of what being an Air Force pilot is like. It really is the best damned job in the world, we’re just all pissed because a handful of doucher bureaucrats continuously do their damndest to ruin it. That constant fight wears people down, the airlines look like a relief with all the money for nothing angle, so every indiscretion seems like the world is ending. “No morale patches! Fucking hell, the good old days are gone!” “Wait, now the CSAF is doing mustache March? That’s it, I’m shaving it off and heading to Delta!” Which they have the option to do of course, because they’re an Air Force pilot. Guard, Reserves, AD; you can’t really fuck this up. As long as you fly well, work hard, and be a bro, you’ll be fine. Just don’t join the Navy.
