I read bits and pieces of this thread and initially I had no clue who you were talking about. Being an old retired Army guy this "Doc" fella meant nothing to me. However, this morning I was in DFAC 2 here at Al Asad Air Base and I was watching a bit of AFN and saw a commercial come on... I'd seen the commercial a couple of times before and thought the guy at the beginning was a bit of a phony but took no note of the name... well, this morning I locked in on the guy's. Gen something "Doc" something . Is this the guy you are all talking about? Like I say, before I ever noticed his name he registered on my “he’s-a-phony” meter.

Was it the happy-lookin' fella on the right?

You can see the resemblance with Montgomery Burns from The Simpsons...

And the similarities don't end there...

Is he standing on a step stool in that picture? He's only like 5'1" or something! Maybe they found the shortest 1Lt on base just to stand next to him, or perhaps the LT is standing in a hole.

The same reason Mick Jagger doesn't have any wrinkles in his videos, but if you see him in real, argh!

It looks like the only BTDT award/dec he has is an "Aerial Achievement Medal with two oak leaf clusters".

Hmmm, no KLM or SWASM... Didn't just about any AF pilot that was in then, get one (since a lot of them participated)?

WOW, he got a "Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal"!

Looks pretty much like the resume of a big "Staff-Weenie"...

Thread revival. I just read this letter in the AF Times - I thought it summed it up perfectly. It wouldn't surprise me if this Foglesong found this Sgt and demoted him to a one-striper.

---------

I was surprised to see that Gen Robert H. “Doc” Foglesong, commander of US Air Forces in Europe, is to be inducted into the Order of the Sword on Aug. 26.

Not that being inducted is not a great honor; it was the reason given that amazed me. The reason given [in the Air Force press release] was “Gen. Fogelsong has worked tirelessly supporting the enlisted force under his command. We can take any one of the 15 Combat and Special Interest Programs he’s instituted within this command and see that they embody the development of the enlisted force.”

My issue is with referring to various special-interest programs as combat programs. Renaming base cleanup, a detail referred to as “weeds and seeds” as Combat Proud, or base in-processing as Combat Exit are three of the eight or nine such programs. Combat is not something that we in the military should take lightly or use as a buzzword for various programs.

Combat, in the end, is about the taking of human life, violently. Our job in the military is to defend our country; we do that by “breaking things and killing people.” Using a word such as combat to describe the latest program of the day is a disservice to and devalues the sacrifices made by more than 1 million Americans who, over the last 230 years, never came home from combat.

Until these combat programs die a quiet death, meaning they are renamed to reflect what they really are, I am one noncommissioned officer who cannot support Gen. Fogelsong’s induction into the Order of the Sword.

Foglesong honored with Order of the Sword

by Master Sgt. Mona Ferrell

U.S. Air Forces in Europe Public Affairs

9/1/2005 - RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany (AFPN) -- The U.S. Air Forces in Europe commander was bestowed the enlisted corps highest honor Aug. 26.

Gen. Robert H. “Doc” Foglesong, who is led USAFE since August 2003, was inducted into the Order of the Sword before nearly 600 enlisted Airmen and guests representing every base within the command.

General Foglesong credited his father for the characteristics that got him where he is today.

“My dad was (a noncommissioned officer) in the United States Navy, and he spent four years in the South Pacific,” the general said as he held his dad’s dog tags up high. “I learned about work ethic, dedication, and I learned about commitment and taking care of your people from Red Foglesong. He brought those NCO characteristics back home with him … so, I know what NCOs do.”

These same characteristics are found in today’s Airmen, the general said.

“I know that the NCOs in our Air Force are the steel (that supports us),” General Foglesong said. “They are the service-before-self patriots who give their all without blinking an eye -- all for the sake of serving this great nation of ours.

“We have the greatest NCO corps in the world,” he said. “We are the most respected and feared Air Force in the world, and I unequivocally blame the people in this room for that.”

Touted as an “Airman among Airmen and a leader among leaders,” on the Order of the Sword proclamation, the general’s induction is the highest award the Air Force enlisted corps can bestow upon a person.

“I can’t think of anyone more deserving,” said Chief Master Sgt. Gary Coleman, USAFE command chief master sergeant and sergeant major for the ceremony.

“His support and guidance for the enlisted force are unparalleled,” Chief Coleman said. “We are honoring a great leader. The general’s sincere personal concern for the men and women in this command, combined with his outstanding leadership has catapulted USAFE to new heights of performance and combat readiness -- all while providing superior services that have allowed our Airmen to grow spiritually, mentally and physically.”

Most of these services have come by way of the 15 combat and special interest programs General Foglesong has instituted since taking the USAFE flag.

Whether looking at education, high-energy events of Project or countless quality of life initiatives, “the total dedication and passionate concern our commander has for our enlisted Airmen and their families is readily apparent,” Chief Coleman said.

Humbly considering himself unworthy of the honor, General Foglesong said his induction into the Order of the Sword is the highlight of his career.

“This (is) the high-water mark in my 33 years of service,” the general said. “Nothing will top all of you being here tonight.” (Courtesy of USAFE News Service)

I think you all should be ashamed of yourselves for insulting our dear leader, General Foglesong. His unimpeachable character has inspired his subordinates in a way not unlike, dare I say, George Washington. Foreshame!

P.S. There are 5 lights
