Would anyone at Columbus right now be willing to take a couple pictures of the different housing areas and post them, or point me to where I can find some online?

All the pictures on the privatized website look very fancy and nice, but from things I've read online, it appears that they are neglecting to post pictures of the less-than-desirable accommodations (I guess that would primarily be Capitol?).

I saw the pictures on the baseops page, and they look pretty crappy, but someone said those haven't been updated since all the renovations occurred...

Help a brother out?

The pics on baseops.net are very similar to what is currently being offered in Capitol. A majority of students (married) live there while a majority of the IP's live in State.

I googled "Columbus AFB Housing" and saw a few extra one's there...

Shit... Those kind of suck. I was hoping they were outdated pics, as I had been told.

I'm in TLF right now....PCSing out. TLF is in Capitol village...but, our place is updated somewhat on the inside - basically, fake wood floors. I'll manage for 8 days or so, but, going from 2400 sq/ft to around 1200 sq/ft sucks.

PM me your # and I'll text you a few other pics from both State and Capitol.

Any information on GA flying in the local area? I dont see anything about a base aero club ( I realize they are a dying breed) and only one flight school, Accessible Aviation, at KGTR. Any local clubs or places to rent a bug smasher for XC flying?

Carl at Accessible Aviation is a good dude. I, along with 6-9 of my squadron mates have used Accessible Aviation to get our ATP ratings. While it is technically a flight school, I don't see why he wouldn't rent you an airplane after a local checkout (required for insurance)...after all, the airplane isn't making him money sitting in the hangar.

Give him a call an ask.

Cheers,

Any gouge on a good civilian eye doc in local area?

The gouge on the OB group in Amory, MS (35 mi NE) was spot on. Dr. Wood and his partners are top notch and the L&D nurses provided an incredibly enjoyable experience. The small hospital was everything we could have wanted.

Im an avid shooter and plan on taking my two handguns and Mosin Nagant rifle with me to Columbus. I plan on living on base and Im not really sure how to store the weapons and so forth. Im also interested if there are any rifle/handgun ranges in or near Columbus. Does anyone here have any advice or can point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance!!

I'm not 100% sure about storing your weapons either, I would call SF and ask them. As far as shooting, there is a target range just north of base on 45. It's off the side of the road near a corn field, blink and you'll miss it.

Yeah Mikes is sketchy as hell, but a great place to shoot. I have also heard of Columbus PD letting guys go shoot at the LE range. This info is about 3 years old though.

Has anyone used a CBM local contractor/company for any of the following:

Granite countertops

Tile flooring

Removing wallpaper / interior painting

Any recommendations / reviews would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

For countertops, Glen at superior solid surfacing did an outstanding installation with great attention to detail on a job I hired him for recently. Awesome end product and zero issues/complaints.

Anyone have DirectTV for their TV and internet over CableOne? I'm thinking of going that route, but want to make sure it's reliable.

Disregard: Viasatt wants to charge $129 extra/mo on top of $50 for DirectTV! :flipoff:

I had cable one for interwebz & dish for tv, standard issues with cable (ok service, shitty support, guy punched a fist sized hole in my wall on install, tried to cover it up with a wall plate). Dish was a good deal.

Just got direct tv and att uverse internet a couple days ago--I am on base. Heard from others att internet is just fine. The fastest they have on base is 6 mbps. Paying 24.95 per month with one year contract. Have heard mixed things about internet with cable one and the price was just too much for budget.

Was CHEAPER to do direct tv deal separate and not bundled with ATT. Also, if you have a Costco card still (or if you want to get one for 55) they are offering a 200 gift card if you sign up through them.

As far as I know you either store your weapons at the armory in base which I've heard is a bad idea due to treatment issues, or if you have a legit gun safe you can store it at home, my brother who was stationed there was telling me this since I will be there soon but yeah checking with SF would probably still be a good idea.

Internet in regards to housing or UOQs?

CableOne in the dorms was terrible and more expensive. The plan I had also did a 50GB cap (which I went over). Had nice peak speeds, but was inconsistant after 1630 when everyones on quittin' time.

Switched to ATT, with the 12mbps plan and it has been consistant throughout any time of the week for less than $30/mo, supposably a 250GB, but I haven't checked it if I went over.

Anyone know of any good auto mechanics in C-Bus besides the overpriced dealerships?

Go see Teddy Roberts at Roberts Auto Service, just out the back gate. Great dude who bends over backwards for military.

If you're looking to get body work done, Bob's will give you a square deal. If you need a more mechanical job, there's a shop right outside the main gate (1st building on the left as you go south on 45, I can't remember the name) that does good work.
