What about that little joint that had the best steak in the world? Everything else on the menu was nothing. They sold steak, crappy salad, and pop by the can. I can't remember the name of it, but 10 years ago it was the best steak I've ever paid for. It was in a trailer, and the grill was right by the door as you walked in.

Old Hickory. All they know is steak and potatoes.

What was the other place for a good steak? It was across the street (ish) from Old Hickory in a rundown strip mall kind of place.

Very no frills, but they had a 16 oz sirloin there to make your eyes water.

Are you wanting to buy or rent? I know a few friends who are selling/renting.

I'm interested in buying. I'm still waiting on orders, so I'm unable to commit to anything at this point. I expect to be in place next spring.

I'll be there at the beginning of November; know anyone with a 3-bdr looking to rent out a house?

My wife and I aren't sure whether we want to live on base or not, so we're trying to look into our our options.

Thanks...

Are you going to be a stud or IP? After what our friends have said about on base housing we have opted to live off base. It's good for some, I just can't fathom spending 1600/month for rent on a house with all the caveats of living on base. Even if I only break even, it's worth it to me to do what I want with my home and not deal with any shoeness. For our family it's better to live off base.

Stud, actually.

That's odd what you said, because I've heard a lot of good things about living on-base at Columbus.

My main concerns are time (no commute), and support for my wife. However, my original thought was to get a relatively cheap apartment/house off-base and try to pocket any BAH difference, but I'm not sure how feasible that is in the Columbus area.

Any words on that?

Don't get me wrong, for a year or so base housing is great. Compared to when I went to UPT at CBM over 10 years ago the houses have improved a lot. Totally agree that on base is probably the best option for you. In my current situation I prefer to escape the USAF when I leave the squadron for the day. We really got a bad taste in our mouths sts with the spouses that think they are O4-O6 equivalent because their husband wore that rank. My wife and I don't play those games, so for us it's better to live off base. If I were you (which I'm not) I would live on base considering your show times early in phase 2 and 3 and the convenience of being able to have a few drinks at the club and walk home.

I live off base, and to be honest, commute is almost non-existant. It takes me 8-10 minutes to get from my front door to the squadron. I love being off base and most of my class that was in the dorms, is moving off.

Now for the guys that have families living on base, it can be hit or miss. If your only options are Capital Village, then I'd think long and hard about spending a year in those facilities. I haven't lived there, but have heard stories and they aren't the best. If you are able to swing a place at State or Magnolia, then you are in a tremendously better situation.

But if commute was your only concern, I'd say it shouldn't be one. And if you are wanting a few drinks with your bros at the club after work, your class can always buy a "Fun-Bus" to shuttle people back off base. Well worth the money in my opinion.

I can tell you a realotor NOT to use. Erma Sanders. She's old school racist & is more concerned with preserving the town of Columbus as she understands it than buying/selling real estate.

I know a few guys who used Doris Hardy (Century 21 I think) because she's affiliated w/ USAA and they had mostly positive things to say.

Same goes for Phillis Enis with Coldwell Banker - I heard good things but wasn't persinally involved.

Do a lot of guys with families live off-base?

I'm not looking to buy AT ALL, so are there any decent family places to rent that are still close to base?

I know UPT is a lesson in maximizing available time, and this may be my wife's only chance to live on an AFB (Guard), so we're definitely leaning more toward on-base housing... However, I'd also like to have an idea of a back-up in case there is no housing available.

I think a lot of it comes down to housing availability and situation. In my class, there are 5 married guys, but only one has his family with him, and he is on base. In the class ahead of me, there were several people accompanied with their families who turned down Capital Village (their only choice) on base, because of the housing issues and moved off base.

As for places "close to base" that are family friendly, unless you like living in a trailer down by the river (or find a house on AHRN or go through a realtor to rent), then you are pretty much relegated to the apartments (Waverly, Franklin, etc.) or Audobon Cove about 8-10 minutes south of base off of 45.
