Just saw "Basterds" last night, and I thought it was pretty damn good. Add Col Hans Landa to the ranks of the great film villains, that guy was just plain scary. Brad Pitt was pretty funny too, especially a scene where he tries to pass himself off as Italian, honestly believing that he can get away with not making any attempt to disguise his hillbilly accent and the Germans won't notice because they "don't have a good ear for Italian".

I thought it was very good. Brad Pitt's character was definitely one of the more forgettable characters from the movie, which surprised me. The accent was too over the top to me. I absolutely loved the scene where the British Leftenant was introduced. Great dialogue in that scene with a great cameo.

Highly recommend!

Same for District 9 as well.

D9 had much more potential, but so much was left unresolved. HATED the mockumentary style of the first half. If I want a shaky camera, I'd make my own movie asshat!

As for Inglorious Basterds, great movie. Brad Pitt's acting took a lot of heat over the intentionally bad TN accent, but I felt that it was excellent comic relief throughout the movie. It was standard Quentin Tarantino style... another great dialogue-driven movie. If you don't like that style, don't bother with this one.

And Col Landa... best villian in a long time. Outstanding acting. That man should win something for that role.

I've seen both movies recently. I enjoyed District 9. I thought the social commentary was very prominent but stopped just short of annoying me. I don't like it when movies beat me over the head with their message (Lions and Lambs, etc.)

I LOVED Inglourious Basterds. I was also expecting more "Brad Pitt talks funny and kills Nazis in interesting ways" but in hindsight, I'm glad that isn't the route Tarantino went. I think that it wold have been entertaining, but would've gotten repetitive (ala Kill Bill). As others have mentioned, Chris Waltz was excellent as Col. Landa (be glad this guy doesn't work at Fairchild). I thought Brad Pitt did a good job of keeping his character over the top but not crossing into the absurd. I'm an admitted Tarantino fan But I really enjoyed this movie and think its probably his best work since Pulp Fiction.

EDIT: Another thing I really liked about this movie and failed to mention is the soundtrack. Tarantino does an amazing job of selecting music for his movies and Basterds is no exception. I particularly liked the Ennio Morricone piece he uses in the opening scene.

Inglorious Basterds was by far the worst movie I've seen in a few years. Horrible acting (except Landa) , choppy plot, no character development, and half the movie was in subtitles. I want my money back.

Great effects with the 3D and all but the weak ass attempts at likening this movie to any situation currently going on in real life today damn near made me want to leave. The whole "shock and awe" comments, and the "their planet is already dead / They killed their mother" (ie mother earth). I don't remember the exact verbiage but there was one comment made trying to make this "planet" like the country of Iraq and how we invaded for "unobtanium" (oil) and didn't care about the people or what we had to get it............blah blah blah. Really turned me off to the whole thing.

On a lighter note, Inglorious Bastards is by far my favorite Tarantino movie to date. Delta had it available on their on demand system for transatlantic flights. I watched it once going to ATL and again back to Frankfurt. Oh the irony of watching that movie while flying to and from Germany....

James Camron wrote the script immediatly after he finished Titanic (1994/5). So rest easy, nothing in this movie had anything to do with the political climate of today...and since he isn't a fortune teller I doubt he knew about the oil crunch or OIF/OEF.

I for one absolutely loved pretty much every aspect of the movie. Only wish there was an IMAX in a reasonable distance of here. I highly recommend seeing it in "REAL 3D" rather than the regular 3D though, the difference was rather noticable.

Ok, how has no one talked about "The Hurt Locker" on here yet? (feel free to redirect me if I've missed it...)

Just watched it after it cleaned up at The Oscar's last night. Not too impressed. Some things seemed right, the dirty streets, the explosions, some of the emotion of the main characters. On the other hand there were SOOOO many details that were completely F-ed up for no apparent reason that it took me out of the moment over and over again. "Let's split up and cover more ground!" Oh, I'm gonna go all CIA and leave Camp Victory in a freaking sweatshirt with an M9 in hand and hunt down some Iraqi boy I think got killed...that sounds like a good idea! /sarcasm

Plus the pacing was horrible. The "exciting parts" weren't all that exciting, and the plot just stumbled forward with no point other than to count down the days until the main character's tour was up. Each little vignette was unrelated to the others, making for a plot that had no point. It was like real life where you're just watching someone do their job (albeit very inaccurately re: tactics). Not exciting. Even if your life includes flying planes or explosions, if there was a movie made about my last deployment it would have been boring as shit and this movie was just that to me.

Just my opinion...wondering what others think who maybe have BTDT.

Well I liked it... BUT i watched it right after it came out and no one had heard of it. I wasn't expecting anything great. It felt like I was going to watch some indie movie and was pleasantly surprised. Yes I found somethings lacking (like you said running through the streets of Iraq in civvies). But remember, the guy who wrote the screenplay was a reporter embedded with these EOD guys who then went on to wrote an article for Playboy that turned into the movie. It was based on real people and their real stories. The writer is getting sued by a MSgt Sarver who claims the movie is based on him and he wasn't compensated.

Anyways I liked it because I wasn't expecting anything good when I watched it. Had I watched it after all the Oscar buzz I probably would have been disappointed as well.

Gotta say, you were correct. The wife rented it for me and while I've only watched about 2/3rds of it, so far it has been weak. I'm hoping the last third picks up.

Julie Benz is nice to look at but she can't act for shit in this movie. Her accent is horrible and she needs to be wearing less clothes. Didn't she buy herself a rack? Well, then be proud of those puppies and show them off!

By the way, The Men Who Stare At Goats wasn't much better. It had a few moments, but for the most part it was only mildly entertaining. Aren't there any good movies out there anymore? I'm hoping Sherlock Holmes will be better...it got a 7.6/10 on IMDB and a 69% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Guy Ritchie directed it, so it's got a chance.

A quick review on the first half hour of Bitch Slap...very disappointing!

For one, the 'unrated' version is no worse than PG-13. Lots of cleavage, but no real boobs. Unsat!

Secondly, so far the movie's focused on one location, with brief "flashbacks" that are cheesy attempts to mimic Sin City. Again, unsat.

Lastly, the violence so far is--believe it or not--pretty tame. If I can't have big boobs, at least give me some Jason Statham-type asskicking! There's a few scenes with a little gratuitous violence, but for the most part it is very lacking. If there had been some hot nude chicks I could forgive this, but since neither have materialized, a big unsat!

The acting is a notch or two above a porno, and the three main characters are easy on the eyes; but so far it's not anywhere close to what I had hoped!

And I doubt it'll get any better...

Just finished watching Surrogates with Bruce Willis. It was a last-minute selection at RedBox, and both the wife and I were quite impressed! It was a great sci-fi flick with an excellent premise and a plot that kept its pace throughout the movie. For just a buck rental, it was well worth it; it was probably one of the best movies we've seen in a long time. Nothing overly spectacular in the special effects department, but that is what make it such a good film, it wasn't like Avatar or the Transformer series where it seemed like the CGI was used to prop up a weak script.

Well worth the rental, especially if you enjoy sci-fi flicks that actually have a good storyline!

Just saw it yesterday. It was one of the most convoluted, multilayered, enigmatic gems I've had the pleasure of witnessing. If Timothy Leary and M.C. Escher conceived a lovechild during a two week long acid bender, this movie would be their progeny. Just make sure you're not scheduled for a drug test after you watch it.

The entire movie did a outstanding job on building the complicated multi-layered concepts of dreams and how difficult it was to distinguish them from reality. So difficult that DeCaprio's character - a professional at dealing with them - can't even tell the difference without his "totem". The entire movie builds the subplot of his personal life and yet it ends about 6-9 seconds before we know what truly happened. I'm all about figuring trying to figure out what happened, but there are so many subtleties in either direction that there is no definite answer because they don't want you to have one.

Weak.

But other than that, it was fucking awesome.
